Thanks a lot for this awesome answer. I want to stick with Windows 7 because it most resembles Windows XP, which my brother has become accustomed to. I mentioned at the start that he has autism and learning new things can be challenging for him, I think the different appearance of Windows 8 may...
So I've come up with a bit of a revised list. If there's anything in here you guys may think is unneeded, please let me know. I realize that i'm at $1200 before monitor, but I think that may be ok.
Intel Core i5 4670 Quad Core 3.4GHZ Processor LGA1150 Haswell 6MB Cache Retail $235.99

My brother uses his computer for nothing but basic gaming - not even multiplayer games. His uses will likely not expand into movies or anything that takes up gobs of space - I'm thinking a 250GB SSD would be more than enough for him
Currently looking at NCIX but I'll also check Memory Express and probably Tiger Direct and Canada Computers.
No FPS in particular - I'd just like it as an option for him. 90% of use will be SimCity.
Current monitor will be replaced with machine - I would buy the new monitor along with the...
Thanks for your response. Are you suggesting the SSD with or instead of the WD Black? For someone who keeps a very tidy computer, with no movies or large file sized content, would 256 GB suffice?
Also - what are your thoughts on the 4670 for games other than SimCity? Say he found a recent FPS...
Hello [H],
My brother wants a gaming PC for $1,200.Answer these questions first.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Entirely gaming
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? $1,200 CAD including shipping
3) Which country do you live...
Thanks for your reply. My plan for fire protection is to promote the WD passport to a photo backup device that I'll update from time to time, and store elsewhere.
So would software like Plex have to be installed on the NAS, as well as any accessing devices? Would I need a Panasonic Plex app...
Evening [H],
Haven't been on Hardforum in some time, nice to see it hasn't changed :) As usual I'm after some advice.
I need a better backup system than the WD passport that I currently use. I have a laptop and a PC, both connected wirelessly to my router, and both with a load of pictures...
I guess I wasn't detailed enough.
I do not have Vista.
I will not be overclocking.
$1100 does not include shipping but does include every component, including monitor (would like a decent 22").
I can and will build it myself.
Unsure what mobo features - I don't know what's new and exciting.
Hiya [H],
I'm in the market for a new machine, I've been out of it for about 3 years. This machine is going to be running Vista, and will primarily be used for browsing, looking at pictures and burning DVDs. I'd like to get 2 - 3 years of this type of use out of it.
I want to give a small...
I'm looking at AVG's Internet Security, 2 years for $70. What are your thoughts? We have Norton AV 2006, which sucks, so we're looking for a thorough program that uses few resources.
I am looking to build a new system using a C2D 6400 and an 8800GTS. The only things I am unsure of are the motherboard and the RAM.
I want to be able to add another 8800GTS in the future so SLI is a must, also I don't want to rule out the possibility of overclocking but I don't have the free...
Before I buy, what do you guys think of this build? I am trying to build a computer for a gamer who would never understand what's under the hood, but likes to play the latest games and would like to continue doing so for a few years. No overclocking going on here. Any cost saving suggestions are...

I need a few suggestions on RAM, and HD for that matter. I'm not looking to...
Hello everyone,
So I am looking to build a system for my brother for X-mas, I'm looking to get him something he will be able to use for a few years with minimal upgrades. He's is into gaming mostly, so I am looking for suggestions on the following components.

So I've got a Compaq Presario that I have succesfully logged into my wireless network, but for some reason it won't get internet service. When I run an ipconfig, it's shows a black for Connection-specific DNS suffix and Default Gateway, but it does show an Autoconfiguration IP Address and Subnet...
Since the purchase of my new computer, about 6 months ago, I've had a reoccuring problem. If I try to download something through IE, the download usually does not complete. At any given time, my cable modem lights stop flashing. The download window will eventually report that it has timed out...
I am going with the PC version.
To enjoy Oblivion you won't need to have played Morrowind. It's not a sequel, the only way it is related is that the stories will have taken place in the same world.
I do however recommend Morrowind, if you are able to dedicate some time to it. It's not that...
I am anticipating this game as much as anyone. There are only 2 sources that I will believe have an official release date.
Either this website or my own eyes when I see it on a store shelf.
To get my ram to 240 mhz I had to change only the CAS to 2.5. Still running at 1T. If I am understanding clearly, running a divider is in my interest with this setup ?
Hey all,
So currently I am clocked at 2.64 ghz, with my RAM at DDR480. My RAM does not want to go any higher, and I am wondering if it is worth it to push my CPU up to 2.75 using a divider? I have heard that the best performance for my motherboard comes from a synchronous set up.
Opinions?
