New Tesla Roadster Up Close and Personal

Is this supposed to be a dig? Welcome to the future. Why do you need a tachometer when there's one gear? Why need a speedometer at all? Oh right, to mentally masturbate yourself while you rev your 'engine.'
Wow. I will let you know sir, when I masturbate in my car, it is not mentally. :ROFLMAO:

That said, there is every once in a while you might want to be able to see some gauges.

Simple exterior is nice, simple (overly so) interior is not. The roadster was set as a "performance" car, there NEEDS to be a static instrument cluster in front of the driver, and the F1 style wheel? Really? You telling me that this car has a steering response rate to be maneuverable enough on the street? These work on the track because moving around parking lots and making U turns are not something F1 cars do. And if you did up the steering ratio enough to be usable, it's going to be a twitch monster on the highway.

Whaaaaat?

Is that Trans Am GTA in the background? Looks like one I had, years ago.

No, that is my 1986 Trans Am that I was putting an LT4/T56 into.

I never finished the Trans Am, ended up selling it to a friend who stripped the parts off of it to use on his Camaro.

I bought this 88 Formula and started working on this one and the Trans Am just sat in the garage till I sold it.

I sold the Formula in 2016 due to my disability and lack of employment, so I have no vehicle now.

You go into controller settings and change the sensitivity.

I mean maybe they have some really wild variable ratio speed-based steering magic they pulled out, otherwise I agree with you, and even then that steering "wheel" isn't something I'd personally want. Is it going to have a KITT voice pack talking at you too?
Doesn't seem like it has variable ratio steering:

58:20, seems to rotate the steering wheel 360 degrees.

Yeah that's just dumb then, that was 360° in one direction so that would be minimum 720° lock to lock. No way that'll make it to production.

Tesla plans next-generation Roadster reveal after almost a decade of delays

Tesla is planning to show off its long-delayed next-generation Roadster on Thursday, almost a decade after Elon Musk’s company started taking deposits for the electric sports car...the event will be livestreamed from a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, near Waco...it’s expected to begin at 7:55 p.m. local time, or 8:55 p.m. ET

Musk has promised fans a new Roadster with “rocket thrusters” that could “allow a Tesla to fly”...

Tesla reveals SpaceX-powered Roadster that flies and falls with style

Musk said Tesla will finally build the long-delayed vehicle in 2028, but didn’t name a price...Tesla will offer it in three trims...the first is “Performance,” which Tesla describes as “road ready”..it seats two, has active aerodynamics, and features a “multi-mode suction system for next-level performance on and off the track”..the second trim is “Thrust,” which is “race ready” and seats two, and has rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters that enable sub-one-second 0-to-60 mph accleration...the third is “Rocket,” which is “air ready” and seats one, and has 10 cold-gas thrusters positioned around the car

All three trims will have 300 miles of range and be capable of speeds exceeding 230 miles per hour...Engineering VP Lars Moravy said at the event that the Roadster uses 10 thrusters connected to 600 liters of compressed air to lift and spin the car in midair...the air tank can be recharged, he said...“Every usable void in the car is packed with Carbon Fiber Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs)”...

flying cars, what could go wrong? ...no more traffic jams, just use the Roadster to fly over the traffic

Is the due within 10 days just the total reservation fee or is that the full price?

Another pointless gimmick demo to make brainless investors wet. Just think about it, you won't be allowed to willy nilly just take off from the streets in a car even if it was actually capable of that. You'd have to get a pilot's license, register with the FAA, and get ATC permission just to take off. For what? For the CO2 tanks making it "fly" to get depleted in less than a minute.

it is a gimmick but you won't need a pilot's license to hover a few feet above the ground...the cars are not going 10,000 feet in the air...the only practical use would be in construction jobs or police/firefighters etc

What is the practical use of sports cars that can hover a few feet above the ground in construction jobs or the police, or firefighters? I know you all imagine swat coming in a flying APC, but this is not it. This is about as far from practical as the hyperloop is from an actual high speed train.

Gimmick using existing tech for showboating is not cool new tech.

Although on the scale of waste this is on the lower end. What's infuriating is the reaction from people who actually believe this is some sort of paradigm changing new tech that nobody could've conceived of before.

Its not viable simply because filling the 600 liter air tank will likely use at least 50kwh. Probaly a lot more

Its fucking cool though. I love it

I'll happily go with the performance model myself.

Considering how much energy is stored in those COPVs, in case of a crash you will turn into mincemeat.

That was straight Speed Racer Mach 5 and Batmobile performance right there. Coolest tech demo I've seen this year. I'm curious about the actual price and range but like the Cybertruck we probably won't know till release date which supposedly is 2028.

That being said I think it'll sell well to the rich guy goes fast type that wants a two-seat electric sports car that has rockets.

Performance, Thrust (limited, one per customer), and Rocket (invite only). Thrust is $5,000 due today and $245,000 due within 10 days.

One single thruster failure and you are a flaming uncontrolled arrow.
Par for the course with Tesla I guess

That is why its invite only which I suspect will be for certain demo purposes. Wouldn't surprise me if we see this Roadster in the next James Bond or F&F film, events like at Las Vegas or auto, air shows.

RWD and 300 miles of range. Buyers will want the rear rockets otherwise they would buy a high performance ICE two-seater instead. Vroom vroom vs rockets!

I'm looking forward to Brooks from DragTimes getting one (I hope he does!). If the Roadster lives up to the claims, it's going to embarrass other cars in the quarter mile so long as it doesn't slow down too much near the end.

The whole flying thing with driving up a wall and doing mega barrel roll and jumping over cars was cool.. because nobody has done that with thrusters on a car before in such a controlled manner. But of course there's really no practical purpose, other than boosting acceleration or providing on-demand downforce in turns at the race track. But, the point of the demo was to show an engineering feat of what they can do. We haven't seen anything like this before. Previously, I believe the award was probably held by the Chrysler Turbine Car, where we saw an insane design demo'd in the real world. It was likely just as challenging of a engineering feat given the time period. (I'm only speaking of potential consumer cars in this context of course)

It’s going to be entertaining once people start offing themselves and others in these things like idiots trying to show how cool they are 😂

Tesla made the Rocket model invitation-only precisely for that reason, I'm sure. You have to know what you're doing and take the risk that you'll have a botched landing.

With that said, I hope Thruster buyers are smart enough to avoid boosting on public roads. Even on the Autobahn or a Dubai highway you could find yourself rear-ending someone in record time.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but this technology could potentially help reduce major crashes. This tech could essentially be used as method for collision avoidance.

Hope and prayers LOL
People are stupid, it is inevitable.

You can see the absolute meltdown of Elon haters on social media with this announcement. As a car guy, this is one of the coolest things Ive ever seen. I haven't gotten excited about a tech demo on a car in... a decade maybe?
