The Subscription Economy in America is Collapsing...

Sounds like user error. I don't have any of those issues. I just searched for and listened to an album uninterrupted yesterday.
It's more likely the result of Google's inability to get their shit in order so every device runs a different version of the app, depending on what OS version happens to be installed on it.

I've tried premium twice on free trial, 2 years apart. Both times I wished i could cancel it before it runs out. It has some extremely annoying "features". The continue playing one drove me up every wall. You try to open a new window it will load automatically the video you last played, even if it's still open in another tab, even if you deliberately clicked away from it.

The APP is garbage, it keeps pushing shorts, I just load the YT page in Brave on Android and it is not just faster, more convenient, and user friendly, but no ads even without premium.

YT Music is so bad It is almost impossible to find albums on it, and even if you find them there is no option to play an album from beginning to end, it's just chaos. I don't remember it being this bad 2 yrs prior.

Google is the master of enshittification. BTW Google Earth is also becoming a subscription. The offline app will be quietly removed next year and the only way to access it will be via web. Of course a significantly dumber, slower, uglier version. And there will be subscription tiers that allow you to use certain features. I'd not use it if they paid me, it is so shit.
I don't think we're using the same Youtube or YouTube music... Premium is great for me and my family. Funnily enough the continue feature is a great plus for us.

Revanced is basically dead or on life support. They had a falling out and a lot of the developers left for Morphe that is in active developement.

If I understood correctly Revanced then ripped off Morphes code which led to the DMCA take down and now Revanced patches are removed from Github, forcing them to move to Gitlab.
Still works for me. Not sure what Morphes is? Only problem with Revanced is that you gotta update it every 2-3 months otherwise videos won't play.

I use a Tampermonkey script to keep videos playing. Firefox+uBlock Origin also blocks ads with no issue on Android. Play a video in desktop mode to keep it playing while not focused/with screen locked.

It's funny. Those of us millennials that used to complain about the first GTX Titan costing $1000 are now the ones paying $2k-5k for a GPU because we can.

Amazing how having a career changes your perspective.
You're not entirely wrong, but I have a feeling the memory crises might change my mind. For me it's like "Eh I'm gonna be dead in 30-40 years, I'm upgrading my GPU each generation." Hell sometimes I just swap GPUs because it's fun to use something different.

All of the above negative comments can be true. But.

But Wall Street loves subscriptions over one-time purchases. And even if people are cutting back, or like me never subscribing in the first place, the bean-counters will probably have the last word.

I should've set up my NAS for my blu-ray collection years ago. Now disk storage is way too expensive, would be great to have something like Plex or Jellyfin right now.

Basically the same thing. A program that applies patches to YT apk files to add features (exactly the same features actually) and block ads. It forked from Revanced after all but has been its own thing ever since. Revanced has been a broken mess for a months now and is unlikely to get better as all the actual talent left to create Morphe, just because the original Revanced lead developer is a douche.

Regarding the DMCA against Revanced.

I'll have to give it a try.

I use firefox + ublock origin on desktop. Firefox for android is crap, noticeably slower than brave and unstable. The exact opposite of desktop where brave is the slow one.

Probably:

Plus Google are the masters of enshittification. They roll out new "features" to a few users at a time. So when you complain about it anywhere you look like the fool and get replies like: "It's not like that for me, user error!" ! They are doing it deliberately to push through potentially unwanted changes. by the time it gets media attention if at all, it has been like that for 6 months for some users if not longer. They avoid waves of complaints this way, by the time of the next rollout expansion the previous ones have stopped complaining and moved on.

It is deliberate gaslighting, it is just pure evil. No wonder they changed the slogan.

Never had an issue on Android. I am never using a Chromium-based browser again.

Morphe is miles above ReVanced in quality & functionality. Thanks!

I feel like the likes of Plex just over-complicate things.

Quite the contrary, it simplifies things in terms of setup/maintenance/usage, hence the price tag - DVR, remote streaming (even if you don't personally use it - you can surely see the appeal to others - especially for music or when wanting to watch a movie/show from DVR or such in a waiting room or at the airport ect) + offering a relay service for the remote streaming, the sharing features

The only thing the others have (Emby has it, no clue about Jellyfin) that I wish Plex had was 'motion backdrops' so I could have my DVD/Blu-ray/UHD menus that I've ripped play in the background of the title-overview screen

I started with Plex way back in 2013 cause I wanted movie trailers (that I downloaded form Apple trailers or ripped from disc) with my ripped movies, WMC didn't offer it (trailers specifically, in its own movie library) at the time.

I didn't mean complicated from a user/interface perspective. I meant complicated from an engineering perspective.

There is a saying that is bashed into the head of 100% of engineering students. And that is the KISS principle, or "Keep It Simple, Stupid".

In a mechanical design that typically means having as simple and as few parts as possible, especially a few moving parts as possible. In software design, it generally comes down to having as few lines of code as possible, or dewer abstraction layers, fewer dependencies or libraries, etc. It has nothing to do with how easy something is to use, or the effect it has on your life.

It's kind of like the pushrod LS engine vs a super complicated DOHC Mercedes design.

One winds up being lighter, more reliable, more maintainable, and cheaper and easier to maintain than the other.

More complicated systems have a way of becoming fragile and problem-ridden.

I'm a big fan of just putting everything on my NAS, sharing th emedia folder, and playing from it on my Kodi frontends.

I have no need for trans-coding or remote hosting. I feel like the likes of Plex just over-complicate things.
I do both with Kodi. In fact I have Kodi setup on some machines to make use of the Jellyfin plugin when it's not in my local network. I taught family members to use Kodi and they won't try to learn how to use Jellyfin, despite that the smart TV has the plugin for Jellyfin. But yea, I have Kodi setup to access SMB shares.

I've got both as well. More than one of each in fact. I have a V8 addiction.

Running Jellyfin and Plex does not stop you from using Samba, or even crash the PC. It's like all software in that if it does crash then it alone crashes. Won't stop you from continuing to use Samba shares with Kodi.

I'm down to just an Apple family plan. I've been scooping up massive collections of CDs, DVDs, and Blurays and ripping everything to Jellyfin. I think there will be a run on physical media soon. Trying to beat it. Right now you can get 3 blurays for $10 on ebay if a seller does a buy 2 get 1 free deal.
