Local account exists with win11.
I have no ads after spending 2 seconds disabling the settings for them (one drive basically, and suggested apps in start menu which I don't even use ever anyway).
Interface can be customized some with third party programs.

Also, win12 won't be here for quite awhile, win11 is fairly new.

I used to love windows but it's really becoming not what I want.
 
In the last couple months saw an ad for the Avowed game appear in the native W10 notifications, within my W10 Pro VM. It's the only ad I've ever seen on Windows Pro when installed from ISO and with settings customized so came as a surprise.

I've seen a couple others post about it but honestly expected more results tbh given it was showing for Pro users. That said, it only appeared in that particular install so perhaps some as yet unchanged setting allowed it through.
 
There is no real news about "Windows 12" right now. There have been a lot of click-bait rumors, especially around the time 24H2 was released last year, and of course all the rumors turned out to be false.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Microsoft do a "Windows 12" this year though, since Windows 10 going EoL is forcing things for a lot of people and Windows 11 has a somewhat mixed reputation (undeserved IMO). I'm betting that Microsoft will repeat what they did when they took mature versions of Windows Vista and Windows 8.1, gave them each a minor facelift/rebrand, and created Windows 7 and Windows 10. Windows 11 will get a minor facelift/rebrand and we will get a "Windows 12".

The most experimental Windows insider channel right now is the Canary channel, currently testing what will likely become Windows 11 25H2. Could that become "Windows 12" instead? Anything is possible. We don't have anything else tangible to go on right now. It's still possible to do a local account on the latest Canary build, and I really doubt that option will ever fully go away for lots of technical reasons.

I'm curious exactly what you're looking for from the "Aero" theme? Windows 11 already includes a fair bit of transparency in the UI, etc, much like Aero did.

Well, Win7 did have a nice UI. It's just I saw lately messages on social media people complaining about Win11 (and not wanting to let go of Win10).

happens with every other version of windows, every single time. you have to decide if youre going to be one of those hold overs, or move on with the new os. half the time we get a "this isnt so bad after all" post....

Not a virus, the way I look at it. Just a much more intrusive way to monetize your Windows use, since MS isnt' making much these days from upgrades purchased by users like the guys in these forums.

Gooooood luck. Linux is like a rabbit hole within a rabbit hole within a rabbit hole.The nice thing about Linux is that there are so many distros to choose from. With screen managers, installers, and drivers that may or may not exist for your hardware. Plus your daily driver programs may not exist for Linux. Other than that, it's free so it's a great deal. :eek:

I haven't run Windows for a few years now. Steam OS should get a full release this year and support Strix and Strix Halo, and AMD in general.

If you don't want to learn how to Linux you want it to "just work" download the Gnome version of Nobara. It has a welcome screen the first time you run it with a setup guide, do all of the things it recommends.

Then get the Gnome extension manager through the Software app and install:

Blur my Shell
Dash to Panel (or Dash to Dock for a more Mac-like UI, you can install both and toggle them back and forth to get a feel for how you want your Dash setup)
Desktop Icons NG aka DING
Removeable Drive Menu

You use the Super (Windows) key to do most things including switching programs. If you want a more Windows-like environment there are KDE versions of Nobara.

The custom KDE build is really pretty IMO: https://nobaraproject.org/download-nobara/ but I really like the minimalist nature of Gnome.

With everything they're doing in Windows 11, wishing for local accounts = probably not gonna happen with the consumer (free?) versions of Windows anymore. They're making that shit harder and harder and blocking more and more work-arounds in each release.

Huh? The workarounds aren't even needed, you can outright create a new local account after installing windows. I mean, it's a little cleaner with the workarounds to do it during setup, but it's hardly the end of the world t have to create it after and then delete the ms account from your pc.

That article shoe-horned "Windows 12" into an announcement that had nothing to do with Windows 12 for the sake of page clicks.

Windows 12 was not "delayed", because it was never announced. It was never tentatively announced. It's never been on any roadmaps, not in any official discussions, nothing.

The "article" implies that 25H2 was some kind of choice. Like Microsoft was going to release Windows 12, but decided to hold off, and release Windows 11 25H2 instead. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of how modern Windows feature-updates work knows that is 100% pure BS. There was always going to be a 25H2, just like there will be a 26H2 next year, etc. Windows 11 feature-updates (such as 25H2) come once per year under the current update paradigm. That has nothing to do with "Windows 12". Windows 10 still received feature updates, such as 22H2, even after Windows 11 was released.

Windows365 subscription for the masses and windows <year> versions for the few mastodonts that insist on old-fashioned purchases.

People have been groomed to the point that it is not uncommon to encounter a surprised face at the mention of single purchase licenses.

That'll gut it down to about 2GB~ ram and 80~ active processes on boot. Not factoring other stuff like GPU drivers, etc.

Windows 11 lifecycle will likely go through 2031~, and if we use W10 as an indicator, maybe W12 in 2027~, naturally I wouldn't recommend it on day one... Then there's also the possibility of the forced gay cloud stuff for the next go around, so you own nothing, but will be happy...

I don't think it matters a ton which one you choose, as long as it's one that's beginner friendly.
I have pretty much stuck with one distro for 6 years, and that was my first GNU/Linux daily driver.
I think you will need a lot of patience, though, unless you are sticking to extremely simple computer use.

Mint Linux - less bloated feeling than Ubuntu, or if you want Arc varient, Manjaro, i run either / or depending on what I feel like. They both support modern hardware and are pretty smooth. Really most other distro's are just poor branches of Ubuntu /Debian with small changes.
 
I've been on Mint cinnamon for years. I'm too old to adjust to the taskbar at the top of the screen. Haven't had many major issues but when I do I've been able to dig myself out. Just today I trashed software manager with Bleachbit. Timeshift to the rescue, lol.

Local accounts will eventually be completely removed or near impossible to create for most people. How else can they harvest your data?

I suspect MORE invasive ads are coming, Windows OS is basically an advertising/data collecting platform now. I wish MacOS was better but its just depressing to use -- which is too bad since they have amazing hardware.
 
The joke is on me I guess. I bought everything for a new machine except a heatsink waiting for Win12. I thought Microsoft would shaft me immediately after installing Win11 on my computers by coming out with Win12.
(Final specs for my unbuilt machine: Gigabyte B760M-DS3H Intel i5-12400 32GB Kingston Fury RAM 3200MHz 500GB WD SN570 SSD Corsair CX-550 PSU)

Well heatsinks are cheap, at least you bought RAM...

And at no point was there ever anything from any credible source that ever said that Windows 12 was around the corner, or even on the horizon... drop the clickbait addiction.

Finally, every Windows version for the last 15+ years has included a free upgrade from the previous version. Why would you think that they would stop now? How did you think that Microsoft was going to "shaft you" with Windows 12?
