The FBI is seeking up to $36 million for nationwide access to automated license plate reader (ALPRs) data, which could let it query vehicle movements across the U.S. and its territories through a commercial database. 404 Media reports:"The FBI has a crucial need for accessible LPRs to provide a diverse and reliable range of collections across the United States. This data should be available across major highways and in an array of locations for maximum usefulness to law enforcement," a statement of work, which describes what data the FBI is seeking access to, reads. ALPR cameras generally work by constantly scanning the color, brand, model, and license plate of vehicles that drive by. This creates a timestamped record of where a particular vehicle was at a specific time that law enforcement can then query, effectively letting them see exactly where someone drove across time. The technology has existed for decades, but has become more pervasive in recent years.

The FBI says it is looking for a vendor that will let it log into a Software-as-a-Service system and then query the collected ALPR data with license plate information, a description of the vehicle, a time or date, and geolocation information. The FBI says it is looking for ALPR coverage in the following areas: Eastern 48 (East of the Mississippi River); Western 48 (West of the Mississippi River); Hawaii; Puerto Rico; Alaska; and outlying areas such as Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Tribal Territories. In effect, the FBI is looking for ALPR data nationwide and even beyond. An attached price template indicates the FBI is willing to pay $6 million for each of those broad areas, bringing the total to $36 million.

The FBI says it intends to award the contract to a single vendor, but if any such vendor is unable to fulfill all of the requirements, the agency may award the contract to up to two vendors. The contract is specifically for the FBI's Directorate of Intelligence, which oversees the agency's intelligence mission. The FBI is not only a law enforcement agency, but also part of the Intelligence Community.The report notes that the contract appears aimed at vendors like Flock or Motorola Solutions, since they're some of the only companies able to provide the sort of data the FBI is seeking.

Does the Mayor realize how idiotic that statement is? Yeah, you go after criminals you moron not just go on a fishing expedition because you might catch someone maybe.

Also, these idiots say "we limit sharing" ... yeah, right. If it isn't on your server then you don't control anything. If it lives on Flock's servers then they will do whatever they want with it.

I'm not even considering hacking. I'm looking at what the FBI is currently requesting .... real time access to every license plate reader in the country. Flock will sell the data to them just as fast as they will to local towns and counties. The town pays for the camera install and then Flock makes even more profits providing the same data to the FBI. Win-win for flock. Lose-lose for the public.
 
Surprised Larry Ellison isn't mentioned here. He mentions everyone being watched with cameras without their permission. Stuff he says is scary.

Its not just flock, theres all kinds of alpr cameras out there. The particular county I live in has motorola everywhere.

There's a number of CVE's related to flock cameras as well. If you're going to record and retain all this data about private citizen's movements, you cant just gaslight them into believing its perfectly fine when we all know its not.

Everything I don't like is a terrorist. We lived through this in the early 2000's and laughed at our politicians for it, and now they're doing it again and we can't even fake laugh at them because it causes real pain. Cut them down, or throw paint on them.

I'm sure the community isn't aware of this. It's when the community becomes aware is when the backlash starts. It seems the government thinks that if they quietly do something like install Flock cameras then nobody will notice. People will notice.

But we won't do anything because we have to much to lose. My state just passed something where we need a new QR code sticker on our plate and windshield. I for one am not putting that on I will pay the 10 they force on the new registration charges but the sticker is staying on the registration.

Out only hope is the actual thugs starts getting caught enough that they figure out they need to attack them and start ripping them down

It's sad. But if we don't fight back today tomorrow we will be like the uk and in jail anyway. Being asked in jail why you in and saying I ripped cameras down.... probably gets you more cred then well I posed something bad on the Internet

Rebellions are for the young. When you got a house and kids and family to take care of, jail cred isn't going to help much. I get what you are saying 100%. But this is why nothing happens, its the first that throw the stones, if no one follows then it just means a few people in jail and nothing changes. Anytime some protest gets big enough to become a group it will be labeled terrorists and treated as such. I mean we could start the "Flocks Are a Prison" group but I just don't think we will get enough people.

Something like that is hard to enforce. Here in NJ they were going after people who didn't have updated inspections by having check points. Turns out that's illegal. I've had family members drive their cars for over a year without getting pulled over for it. It's most likely something they'd go after when they're pulling you over for something else like speeding. That QR code nonsense is stupider than stupid. Wanna fuck with them? Draw a black line where there shouldn't be one, and it throws the QR code off. Not my problem if the QR code reader can't read it because a permanent marker threw it off. Idiots turning to smart technology are still idiots.

Again, hard to enforce. Flock cameras are not meant to be watched, but do the watching. They're easy to destroy as nobody in their right mind is going to have a cop watch if someone would destroy a Flock camera. It's so easy that California Flock Surveillance Cameras Stolen and Dumped in a Canal. They do have a GPS tracker which is how they found them, but that'll do them little good. Again, smart technology in the hands of stupid people is still stupid people. You don't even need to cut down the Flock camera. Throw paint, destroy the camera, and etc. It's quick and easy and nobody is going to know. This is called protesting as the people didn't vote for this but a corporation who's paying a politician money. Think of this as another form of democracy.

They are aware, Council announced it a while back. Not all are thrilled but no major backlash over it.

It's not state property. A private company owns the cameras, at most they may have leased the property or signed an agreement allowing them to be installed there, but the cameras are not public or government property.

Yes, it is vandalism. That's apparently valid protest according to some people. High ranking people.
