Resident Evil: Requiem

I beat it. The in-game clock says 16h while Steam says 24h. I had a whopping 114 saves and I played way overcautious which led to a ridiculous ammo surplus.

I chose the wrong ending. Whoops! Luckily the game prompts you to redo it because it knows you're a moron. The canon ending gives you much more content.

I enjoyed it a lot! My only complaint is that the Leon sections (Racoon City in particular) were graphically bland. This game does indoor settings a lot better than outdoor.

One of the worst things about NG+ in Requiem is than none of the stuff you were saving carries over, too. I was stashing Requiem ammo so Grace could eradicate some of those early pseudo-bosses. Tough to imagine them pivoting for something as trivial (for most people) as NG+, but I wish they would change it.

Good news I suppose is they will add a Mercenary mode or similar soon which should offer some more content.

This part is my biggest gripe about the game. Not so much graphically, though it did seem washed out, but the zombies that come out of the ground. So cheesey. Like a zombie pops out of a plywood floor. Wtf is up with that? Terrible game design right there. Also story wise, like 30 years later they didn't go in and clean the place up? Just oh hey there might still be this zombie infection left there. we don't know, just let them be.

They kind of explained that, it was a cover up. Still you would think some people would find and report it, but I assume they tried to suppress the knowledge and closed off the territory and airspace. In general I think with RE games they don't try to be completely plausible.

They kinda did the same with RE7, they had some areas (like the mansion) that were real set pieces of design and others that were more bland. I imagine it is just a resources limitation. You only have so many artists, so much time, you have to choose where to spend the resources.

In general I think with RE games they don't try to be completely plausible.
I mean, that's an understatement. The RE universe gets off the hook with silly shit. You kinda just have to accept that the universe has weird shit and don't look too hard for explanations :D

I just got to RPD it's alright so far - not the worst RE not the best RE - reminds me a lot of Revelations 2 the motorcycle part was retarded IMO

Edit: It was better at + after RPD - still, not the best RE IMO but not the worst at all either - also I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY MADE ME KILL HUNK 😭🤣

So...every other bosses corpse stays around forever. Not his. And if you play on the highest difficulty, two adds attack after the fight. Their corpses remain, his doesn't.

Take that for what you will.

Also this really reminded me of Revelations 2 in looks, tone, feel and story as I mentioned, which wasn't one of my favorite RE games, but neither was this as I also mentioned, but this won out over Rev 2 just cause of all the fan service + better graphics etc:

1) The zombies use weapons - dumb - didn't like this especially for the Raccoon City long time dead zombies - they were never 'the other type' of zombie in this game that retained memories, or the ones they used/mutated to guard ARK or whatever - they were just classic T-Virus 'mmmmmm brains' zombies - yet this guy is walking around Raccoon City like he's right out of Revelations 2.:

But, video game logic, I understand even if I don't like it.

2) Zeno the Wesker clone/another person from The Wesker Program just like Alex Wesker in Revelations 2

3) Though maybe it was all intentional - cause is this not Barry, Claire and Natalia from Revelations 2 (why did they hand her over to scientists/Umbrella/whoever - she went to live with Barry at the end of Revelations 2)?

4) Revelations 2 was all about Alex trying to transfer her memories/consciousness into Natalia

5) Everything is 'blood and rust' aesthetic in both games

Edit: Oh, apparently that pic is Eveline and her handlers Mia/Alan from RE7 - looks just like Barry/Claire/Natalia lol

Getting ready to play this.

Anyone play with HDR? I read that the implementation isn't great. I saw some different mods trying to fix it, but unsure if they're any good or if I should just play in SDR.

I did. Like a lot of games, you're picking your poison but neither is that bad. Without it the picture has darker and crisper blacks. With it, you're looking at most blacks being varying levels of gray. I stuck with it because the gray blacks still let you see more details. Plus, those grays are still pretty deep gray. It's not like some other games where it's charcoal vs. pitch black.

HDR seemed better in this one for me than past RE games with HDR (was more black than grey like in past games)

Also something to be aware of regarding black levels:

1) You can often change it with RenoDX. Lots of games, this one included, have a RenoDX mod that will remap various things about how the game handles HDR, which can do things like lower black levels. If you find HDR in a game unsatisfactory, or if you just want to try tweaking it, go see if there's a RenoDX plugin for it.

2) Sometimes there's a good artistic and gameplay reason for not going all the way black, and that can be to make sure low level details are visible. Sometimes you'll discover that knocking on a RenoDX plugin does improve black levels, but you find places that are just too dark to see now. Maybe your display can't do those super-low level dark tones (even OLEDs have trouble with them), maybe your room is too bright (HDR is designed for very dimly lit rooms), maybe your eyes just can't see that low a level. Maybe all of those. Either way you may discover that the presentation that a game chose was done for a reason and making black go down to 0 is not actually as desirable.

But RenoDX is always worth a shot if you want to try it. It's free and just needs Reshade (with addon support) installed for the game.

RenoDX is a Reshade shader so it's only making things worse. You can't fix it with a shader.

You absolutely can. It can reach very deeply in to the game and change things. RenoDX can add HDR output to games that don't have it. It can change the bit depth of render pipelines to clean up gradients, etc. Addons in Reshade can be pretty powerful.

It doesn't change anything in the render pipeline, and that's my point. A shader is a post process that takes place after the render stage, so the underlying issue is still present.

It can and does, Reshade is not just a simple post processor. The add-on API is powerful.

It can intercept and modify draw calls, issue its own, modify render state, manipulate formats, the swap chain, etc.

RenoDX is not just trying to color correct a game's fucked up HDR and calling it a day.

Yep, it also is used to expand the bit depth of the render pipeline in some games. Like in Hollowknight Silksong it will increase it to 16-bit (per color) depth which fixes the banding.
