"The core issue, at least from my perspective, is that Xbox spent years putting players and community at the centre of its strategy. That message has changed. Since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, Xbox feels less like a community-driven gaming platform and more like a division within a trillion-dollar corporation focused on returns. When you spend 70 billion dollars on a publisher, shareholders expect aggressive growth, and executives like Satya Nadella and Amy Hood want that return on investment sooner rather than later. Add that Microsoft’s obsession with AI right now, and it starts to feel like Xbox is being reshaped into something more corporate and less about games.

Xbox still has momentum, and even a PlayStation veteran enjoys the Xbox Ally

I recently covered that Shuhei Yoshida, a respected figure in the PlayStation legacy, called the Xbox Ally X his favourite PC gaming handheld. It is a small but meaningful reminder that good hardware cuts through brand loyalty, and even long-time PlayStation veteran is finding value in the Xbox ecosystem.

However, despite that it’s hard to stay positive amid price hikes, and despite Bond doubling down on hardware, hearing it’ll be a high-end premium device fills me with little hope. But I will say a unified system that can play my Xbox library and Steam library could be a device that warrants a premium price tag, but whether Xbox deliver on something like that remains to be seen and if they can’t, the Series X and S may be my last foray into Xbox hardware."

Consoles aren't premium experiences, so they're kind of coping at this point. Consoles are supposed to be affordable and simple, you buy a console and you know the game will (or should) run on it. Sounds like more branded PCs, but you're better off just building or buying a regular pre-built. Unless "Xbox" branded gaming PCs are very good builds I don't see it doing that well.

I'm torn.

Microsoft lost two successive console generations in part by pricing itself out of competition. The Xbox One suffered by the initial insistence on bundling the Kinect sensor; the Series X suffered as there was no digital-only version for a long while. A pricey Xbox might perform well but is going to turn off cost-conscious types.

At the same time, squandering that brand identity has also made it harder to compete on price in the first place. A premium Xbox might help Microsoft stand out where Nintendo and Sony are still likely to aim for the largest possible market.

After a few months of deliberation bought a console for the first time in many many many years last week. I chose PS5. If i chose on launch of this gen i would have gone xbox but lately with the mass layoffs and IPs that got killed i went the other way. Picked up Gran Turismo 7 for now but the real reason i bought it was for GTA6. All in will be about 1k for PS5 Pro, disk drive, and the elite variant of the PS5 controller since the stock controller feels janky and rattles.

None of my PS5 controller rattle. Neither are they janky.

I have my doubts. They're not Apple and they'll run in to 'why don't I just build a PC' if the prices get too high. Why get locked to Xbox when PC Master race still exists?

This seems fitting,

I wonder how much extra performance can be unlocked running Bazzite on the next Xbox.

Joking aside, I hope they have a 'Xbox' environment to boot into that can run dedicated Xbox software (and backwards compatibility with the older systems).

With all of their titles also being available on PC, I lost the need for an Xbox. I'm on the high end, but I've heard the same thing from friends on modestly powered laptops, too. They're okay running games at 720p on their laptop. You can even use an Xbox pad via Bluetooth. Almost like a Steam deck or Switch...but not. As much as I love having all of their games on my PC, the one thing they could do to get me(and probably others) to buy another Xbox is to have some banging console exclusives. It's why I have a PS5 and a Switch 2. I don't give a damn about either of those consoles, I just want their exclusive titles.

The era of Xbox exclusives ended midway through the Xbox One's lifecycle - barring Rare Replay and maybe some early iterations of Forza Motorsport/Horizon that you can't even buy digitally any more due to license expirations, there is literally zero reason for PC gamers like most of us to buy into Xbox consoles past the original and maybe the 360 for XBLA stuff that never got ported.

Meanwhile, you can still find at least a few reasons as a PC gamer to own a PS5 or a Switch, because believe it or not, those consoles still have exclusives - if for no other reason than the subtle acknowledgement than that's the only reason you can convince PC gamers to buy into your platform.

Funny thing is, Microsoft stands now where Sony stood back in 7th-gen, what with the 599 US DOLLARS PS3 being seen as overpriced and a bit underwhelming, while Microsoft undercut them on price a bit with the Xbox 360 and won a lot of people over. It's also when it seemed like Microsoft was actively trying to kill PC gaming with all the Xbox 360 exclusives. (Case in point: I recalled waiting for a PC port of Halo 3 just like the first two, but was not expecting that I'd literally have to wait until the MCC got ported to PC decades later to get the chance.)

I agree, they aren't supposed to be premium. But, they are supposed to squeeze as much performance and fun as they can out of the hardware they have available. Lacking that, all they have left is "that premium experience."

It isn't a coincidence Xbox started losing when they gave Halo to 343.

It sounds like they're building an XBox PC and trying to use it to convert XBox loyalists into PC gamers before they shitcan the XBox consoles and turn XBox into a hardware spec. Or more maybe a series of hardware specs. Got an XBox level 5 PC? Select the XBox level 5 preset.

How much would you pay (in 2027) for an NUC with a 5070 ti (or a 5070 ti super)

That will be the price of the next xbox

PS6 Price May Be Close To Half Of Next-Gen Xbox

Xbox Magnus will have around 42% more silicon, 20% more memory, and higher board/cooling costs than the PS6. In addition, they mentioned that Microsoft will not be able to subsidize the hardware via software due to its decision to support third-party stores like Steam, resulting in a higher price for its next-gen console.

I'm at lose for what what Microsoft wants to do canceled a bunch of their own IPs like Perfect Dark yet they want new Hardware with no exclusives. Guess its just keeping their jobs at this point.

Report: Microsoft CFO Amy Hood has forced Xbox to deliver an insane 30% profit margin — which is why everything is crazy right now

News
By Jez Corden published 1 hour ago
Microsoft CFO Amy Hood has forced Xbox to deliver an industry margin far beyond what is typical for gaming in general, which will devastate the business if not rectified soon.

The inconsistent messaging and seemingly desperate price hikes has people questioning whether or not Microsoft is deliberately sabotaging Xbox, and it certainly seems that way. Microsoft has been forced to repeatedly come out and deny that it is looking to kill Xbox hardware, and deny that retails are cancelling orders.

With Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft's gaming division surpassed Windows itself in the firm's diversified business. With the AI boom fuelling Microsoft's share price, CEO Satya Nadella is enjoying a near $100 million pay packet in stock incentives, which preclude gaming from the equation.

With analysts and speculators trying to figure out whether or not the "AI boom" is actually predicting a gigantic AI bust, you'd think Microsoft would want to ensure its diversified business model remains healthy to reduce exposure. Apparently not.

Bloomberg reporters Dina Bass and Jason Schrier just revealed that Microsoft CFO Amy Hood is indeed asking Xbox to meet an "accountability margin" of 30%, which is far, far in excess of reasonable targets for the video game industry, and in particular, the gaming hardware industry.

The cancellation of promising games like Perfect Dark, Contraband, and others, are a direct result of Xbox leads Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Tim Stuart attempting to balance Microsoft corporate's demands without tanking the entire business. The amount of strain this arbitrary goal has put on Xbox cannot be overstated, as staffers, customers, and even third-party developers feel the gradual toxification of the Xbox brand.

i used to love annoying the brother in-law by calling it the xbone
I mean thats what it was. You can't have an xbox one after the first xbox. That's like having a playstation one after...oh. Well that doesn't count, since technically it was still gen one. :p

What we're seeing is a lot of gaming companies realizing that gamers aren't as stupid as they thought they are. The mentality was that gamers are stupid idiots with what seemed like an infinite source of money who will buy any slop they can come up with. For a while this did seem like the case with people spending hundreds maybe thousands on their favorite games, but that's over. We have Ubisoft who thought gamers should get used to not owning games, who may need to get comfortable in being owned by Saudi Arabia. Microsoft is still trying to capture that infinite money machine that is gamer whales. This is why we're hearing high end gaming consoles because whales will buy this stuff.

No different that what Nvidia is doing with gaming GPUs. People buying $3k+ 5090s are whales.

No different that what Nvidia is doing with gaming GPUs. People buying $3k+ 5090s are whales.
What Nvidia is doing is entirely different. Mainly because Nvidia has competition and that competition is pushing down prices. If you want an Xbox then you're buying Microsoft's Xbox. Console hardware isn't subsidized anymore, so it would make sense for other hardware manufacturers to get into this. The other reason this doesn't matter because as of right now, only 0.31% of Steam gamers actually own an RTX 5090. The 4090 is .89%. Nvidia is definitely capitalizing on people with a lot more disposable income, but their main market is still $300 to $400 range, and likely even lower.

I've been saying this for over 10 years and a lot of people here were thinking I'm on shrooms for saying this but Xbox died midway during the Xbox One era. It died because Xbox One costed $500 for what was a worse gaming experience than the $400 PS4. Nobody wanted the Kinect for the same reason why nobody wants Microsoft's Recall, because nobody trusted Microsoft with their data. Also the Kinect was a terrible experience to use. Xbox One was going to be always online and prevent used game resale, which pissed off a lot of people. That and Xbox exclusives were mostly mediocre, and you can see why gamers left. The Xbox gamers didn't all leave to Playstation either, as I believe they mostly went to PC. Microsoft thinks if they create a Premium experience then those PC gamers will come back to Xbox. What Microsoft doesn't get is that it isn't the better graphics that brings people to PC, but the freedom to do what you want on it. There are games you'll never be able to play on Xbox that can only be played on PC. That and no reoccurring fee to play games online.

Next XBox is just going to be a prebuilt gaming PC.

Literally the only way they can compete anymore, they are getting trounced by the competition.

That aiming (just a goal you do not reach) to be Nintendo 30% I think (they did 35% operating profit margin a couple of times in recent years, ~30% last time)
You know what device plays all PC games and even Xbox games, plus isn't over priced?
I mean, here Xbox seem to align themselve to do what you asked them to do for years, to make an high priced device that let you play your steam collection (i.e. a gaming PC)

For a while this did seem like the case with people spending hundreds maybe thousands on their favorite games, but that's over.
Is it ? or it is truer than ever that forever game are getting most of the gaming spending in their direction... before we had World of Warcraft that was able to capture thousands from a low single digits millions people (that kept the game long enough to reach that spending).

Fornite revenues seem well project to beat all record in 2025, user base grew but I am not sure the top 1% spender the actual money maker median spending went down, that top 5 million spender are probably worth over 2 billions a year, and you CS2, COD, some other big one. What are the sign that this is over whales in video games ?

Mainly because Nvidia has competition and that competition is pushing down prices. If you want an Xbox then you're buying Microsoft's Xbox.
I am not sure Nintendo/Sony/Gaming PC are lesser competition to the Xbox than AMD/Intel are to Nvidia GPUs, the whole Xbox machine and its 360mm soc + controller + with 4k bluray player in it, is still significantly cheaper than a 5070ti on bestbuy.com

Oh, it's far from certain that this would work. I just wonder if Microsoft has much of a chance competing directly with Sony like it has in the past.

One thing I'd definitely do if I were helming the ship: consolidate on one model. The Xbox Series S really hurt Microsoft as it not only complicated decisions, but reduced Xbox development to a lowest-common-denominator approach as companies had to always accommodate the slower platform (where PS5 devs had just one spec to think about until the Pro).

I'm still surprised Xbox lent their seal of approval and brand to Asus for the ROG Ally (X) when it's just another handheld mini-pc competitor for the Steam deck.

All Xbox/MS had to do was produce 1st party handheld that ran the actual console OS and supported console versions of games. Then Xbox would've been the first to market with a handheld that ran GTA6 next Spring. They could have raked in massive sales for a device like that. They could've piggy-backed onto GTA6 by having a Switch-like experience for for it and revived the entire Xbox brand. MS seems to be seriously lacking in imagination these days *shrug*

Or interested to play in that aggressive, for all its "success", Sony games and service has been doing terrible during all of the PS5 window with horrific margin, that look like a grocery store doing really well:

PlayStation's profit margins have been below double digits for 7 consecutive quarters now, and we take a look at the major culprits behind the profit drop.

It wouldn't even have taken that much imagination on their part - just look at the success of the Switch. I imagine if the Series S was indeed a hybrid system like the Switch - Xbox would've found a lot more success this generation. A hybrid system + keeping exclusives on the Xbox probably would've resulted in some big gains for MS (especially since the PS5 first party releases dipped a bit with Sony's live service focus).

I was deeply disappointed that they didn't call the next-gen version "xbox one two." Sony stepped up to the plate with the Xperia phones, though.

"Xbox Layoffs, Price Increases, and Budget Cuts

by AleksandarK Today, 12:23 Discuss (2 Comments)
Inside Microsoft's Xbox gaming division there is a battle for aggressive company profits, which by the looks of it must be accomplished at any cost. According to Bloomberg, Xbox CFO Amy Hood set a company-wide target to reach a 30% profit margin for the entire Xbox unit back in the fall of 2023. Since then, the company has been undergoing significant restructuring, including price increases, layoffs, project cancellations, and budget cuts to meet this profit target. As some readers may recall, Xbox recently revamped its subscription lineup, introducing Essential, Premium, and Ultimate tiers, along with a PC-only plan. These plans saw a 50% price increase, leaving many gamers unhappy with the steep rise in their subscription costs."

Not sure if GTA 6 is an handheld type of title or that third party handheld with an Xbox OS able to run Xbox Series S games will not be there around the launch of the next Xbox, that said GTA6/Rockstar is not the type that you can ask too much from if that involve them doing anything unplanned.

If the "XboxWindowsOS" work well enough, would it be a big step to have on their oem Xbox Handled, those APU are not that different after all ?

I've never asked for this. What I asked is that Microsoft simply put Windows on their Xbox's. Not double the price while offering the same console problems. We have yet to see what the next Xbox will be like, but I'm thinking a very restricted copy of Windows with Steam as a menu option and nothing more.
Is it ? or it is truer than ever that forever game are getting most of the gaming spending in their direction... before we had World of Warcraft that was able to capture thousands from a low single digits millions people (that kept the game long enough to reach that spending).
If you know anything about World of Warcraft then you know it hasn't been doing well for a while. It certainly peaked at some point, thanks to micro-transactions but there's a reason why people wanted classic WoW.
Fornite revenues seem well project to beat all record in 2025, user base grew but I am not sure the top 1% spender the actual money maker median spending went down, that top 5 million spender are probably worth over 2 billions a year, and you CS2, COD, some other big one. Gen Z are spending Way Less on games. 92% of PC Gamers are on old games. You obviously still have big games, but it is dying down. Look at the games you've listed. Fortnite, CS2, and COD. These are all old games. PUBG, GTAV, Minecraft, LoL, Roblox, and Rocket League are all old games and this is what's popular. Nobody is going to jump onto a new games and spend endless amounts of money on it unless it's something truly amazing.
I am not sure Nintendo/Sony/Gaming PC are lesser competition to the Xbox than AMD/Intel are to Nvidia GPUs,
They are infinitely less competition because you can't take a PS5 game and play it on a Xbox Series X. You can play your favorite PC game on any GPU. If you want to migrate from one console to another you either have to have separate libraries of games or sell everything from the old console to buy what you want on the new console.
the whole Xbox machine and its 360mm soc + controller + with 4k bluray player in it, is still significantly cheaper than a 5070ti on bestbuy.com
It's also a significantly worse gaming experience. Also just as many people are using 5070 Ti's as 5090's. People don't buy those for a reason. Just remember that if you own a PC game then that game will not only work on your PC, but any PC you own. It'll work in seven years, ten years, fifteen years and etc. The game will scale with your hardware where on the PS5 Pro doesn't have most games taking advantage of it's hardware. If the game still doesn't scale enough with your new hardware, then get a texture pack and other enhancements the community has made. You can't play World of Warcraft or League of Legends on Xbox. No God of War games, Spider Man, Last of US 2, Half Life Alyx, FF7 Remake and the list just goes on. I haven't even touched on emulators and homebrew. You can buy the best Xbox ever made, but it will still be a worse gaming experience than a PC.

Sounds like more branded PCs, but you're better off just building or buying a regular pre-built. Unless "Xbox" branded gaming PCs are very good builds I don't see it doing that well.
Which, considering the oem gaming PC scene, is maybe not too hard to achieve to be considered very good builds and could rise the bar.

Those Nvidia Digits, people are quite impressed by the build quality (virtually silent at that size and they have a bit above console like power at 240W), it also has very fast unified ram if gamedev can use it

That a necessary condition, you either go very low specs, high price or wall garden, you cannot have a $500 PS6 gaming machine that let you run SolidWorks. Asking to open it up to steam, to stop selling them at a lost they monetized by taken 30% of every sales on the platform, is asking to rise the selling price.

If you know anything about World of Warcraft then you know it hasn't been doing well for a while. It certainly peaked at some point, thanks to micro-transactions but there's a reason why people wanted classic WoW.
THat why I said before, but in 2024/2025 forever game with whale seem to have been going as strong as ever no ?

Exactly, people are staying on old game (with poeple that will spend 4 figures in their life on them being a main way they make moneys), more than ever ?
. Look at the games you've listed. Fortnite, CS2, and COD. These are all old games.
Yes that exactly what we mean by game people spend 4 figures on, game that are played for 10 years by people (and not game that get all their money day 1, but monthly/yearly from them)

They are infinitely less competition because you can't take a PS5 game and play it on a Xbox Series X. You can play your favorite PC game on any GPU.
How many xbox game are not playable on that PC ? How is it not a competition ? And for many of the most popular games, playing them on a PS5 instead is absolutely an option.

Fornite, Minecraft, Valorant, Overwatch, PUBG, gta5, COD, which popular Xbox games require an Xbox to play ?

That a necessary condition, you either go very low specs, high price or wall garden, you cannot have a $500 PS6 gaming machine that let you run SolidWorks.
Then let the console industry die because you can with PC.
Asking to open it up to steam, to stop selling them at a lost they monetized by taken 30% of every sales on the platform, is asking to rise the selling price.
Sony and Nintendo don't lose money on their hardware. Valve's Steam Deck has an open market for their hardware. Windows allows anyone to buy games from any store they want. Microsoft can't solve this problem by going Premium because PC gaming has been always been the Premium gaming experience and nothing Microsoft does except restricting their games away from PC can fix this.
THat why I said before, but in 2024/2025 forever game with whale seem to have been going as strong as ever no ?
"Forever" games peak and then die down eventually. At one point WoW seemed like it could make infinite money but now people wonder when Blizzard will make a WoW2?
Exactly, people are staying on old game (with poeple that will spend 4 figures in their life on them being a main way they make moneys), more than ever ?
If Microsoft wants that level of income then they can't just slap together a game and expect to make that level of money. What these old games tell us is that every gaming niche one could think of has already been thought of. You can only have so many of these games in the market.
How many xbox game are not playable on that PC ?
None.
How is it not a competition ?
Same reason why cable companies aren't competing against each other when they can't sell in each others markets. I can't buy a PS5 game and play it on a PC and Xbox. Consoles have their own markets within markets, and that's not very competitive.

Sony and Nintendo don't lose money on their hardware.
Nintendo yes, Sony make virtually no profits from gaming overall too, if they not sales a lot of them at a lost, the software side is not profitable.

Forever" games peak and then die down eventually.
If eventually is this century of course, but Fornite 2025 seem like will be the biggest year, that a 2018 video game, GTA 5 is still a big sellers and they will probably be replaced by other forevers game for which people will spend during their lifetime expense on them a lot.

Maybe I am missing your point or the data you saw that indicate that games people will play a long time and spend a lot of them during that long time is gone now, that it was a Fornite era that passed.

If Microsoft wants that level of income then they can't just slap together a game and expect to make that level of money. What these old games tell us is that every gaming niche one could think of has already been thought of. You can only have so many of these games in the market.
Exactly gaming revenues are bigger than ever but very concentrated a the top of thoses games, which are never guarantee to work if you try to make one.

I can't buy a PS5 game and play it on a PC and Xbox.
Maybe but you can buy most of the most populars game on all of them, I feel one day you will say PC gaming was so good it killed Xbox while today you are saying that PCgaming was not a competitor to the Xbox that kept them in check (if they rise price they stop to sales for a reason, there is a ton of competition, PS5 being one, you can play Fifa/madden/harry potter/battlefield/call of duty on it, the games people play), all of the top 10 game sold in 2024 in the US were available on the PS5 I think, which make it and very obvious competitor for someone without a console wanting one.

They can put their games day 1 on PC and still be successful. Plenty of people don't want to play on a PC, either due to complexity or cost. They just need to have games worth playing. Sony has plenty of in house games people want to play, and is now big enough to do timed exclusives or outright 3rd party publishing. Final Fantasy games are 2-3 year exclusives, Death Stranding was 5 years, Stellar Blade is published by Sony so that will probably never come.

Xbox doesn't have much interesting. Most of what they have tends to be mediocre at best.
