WTF MS?

I assume that WMR will still work through SteamVR and that this is just them removing that stupid 'walk around your virtual house to start VR apps in the most annoying way possible' app.

I don't understand why they don't just move it to deprecated status like older versions of DirectX instead of removing it entirely. That way people can still use it if they want to, with the understanding that it's provided as-is.

Yes but then shortly after they remove support from Steam. As explained in the video the only choice a WMR user is too stop at a certain W11 update.

I guess that is my main beef as well.

well, this is concerning. I remember a while ago, there was mention that they would provide a separate download for WMR separate from Win11 installs. I guess that went away?

I don't want anything on my eyes or head. I dislike wearing hats even. Then again, I also sit in the back of restaurants with my body facing the exit so I can be prepared if anything happens. I don't like being isolated from reality.

Ok, well it's nothing like 3D movies from 10 years ago. I can see how that would be hard to know if you've never experienced it.

Oh I have, but it wasn't enough to sway me. I'm very ok with sitting a few feet from a monitor.

im sure the 6 people using it are upset, but its just not worth it for them....

Same for me. I don't like wearing anything at all. In fact I am completely naked. I can't even stand my own hair touching me, I shaved my whole body clean. I can't stand having my hands on a keyboard or mouse. I'm in the corner of the room yelling at the computer right now to post this so I can keep an eye on all entrances in case marauders attack.

Situational awareness keeps you alive. I've been in many situations in my life, uniforms in my life, that has taught me to look around and be ready. Not to necessarily always think someone else is going to be there to assist. Stay alert, stay alive.

hahaha brilliant post. And you know from his comparison to 3D that the guy has never tried VR in his life.

On the contrary, HP Reverb G2 was quite popular headset for simmers on a budget. It still has a good image quality even by todays standards.

Granted simmers are a niche among a niche but if this really meant that their devices stopped working I would be absolutely livid.

There is a petition to opensource WMR.

Petitions like this rarely ever work even if they gather a lot of traction but I signed it anyway just for support. This is a stupid decision from Microsoft.

Sounds good. Maybe only reply when you are contributing then.

I have used my Q2 for a bunch of games, it is intriguing, but my main jam is Microsoft Flight Simulator. There is NO better way to simulate flight than in VR. MS has said they are supporting VR in the upcoming MSFS2024, I may upgrade to a Q3, but I may need to invest in a better rig.

Incorrect... The comparison was from the physical placement on my head which I despise. Wasn't a comparison of the technology between 3D and VR.

Windows Mixed RealityWindows Mixed Reality is deprecated and will be removed in Windows 11, version 24H2. This deprecation includes the Mixed Reality Portal app, Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and Steam VR Beta. Existing Windows Mixed Reality devices will continue to work with Steam through November 2026, if users remain on their current released version of Windows 11, version 23H2. After November 2026, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer receive security updates, nonsecurity updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates.

This deprecation doesn't affect HoloLens. We remain committed to HoloLens and our enterprise customers.
December 2023

So you still have some time.

Has anyone who runs the W11 Insider Preview 24H2 tried manually installing the WMR Portal software to see if it works?

It's super lame, mind numbingly dumb, but it just means it time to upgrade your headset.
I'll upgrade when I feel the need thank you, not because I'm told so.
Steam better hit it out of the park on their next release (or are they going the way of MS?) because the narrow choices the market now offers is quite distressing.
Give me a good option and fuck Meta.

Sony bringing official PC support to the PSVR2 feels awfully tempting. Wired, but the specs on the headset alone is drool worthy for a VR headset.

4k
120Hz
OLED
HDR
Eyetracking
110fov

🤤. Shame no one is really copying the knuckles concept from Valve :(

It's probably through steam link using the PS5.

Also psvr2 isn't as great as the specs imply. What they listed is marketing bullshit.

The screen has insanely high persistence by default which causes most people motion sickness after about 15 minutes, and when you lower the persistence to industry standards the screen is dimmer than pretty much every other headset. So the "HDR" claim is marketing bs.

Also the screen is pentile layout so the effective resolution is much lower than the specs imply.

And it uses fresnel lenses, so the clarity is not good compared to headsets with pancake lenses.

The 110 degree fov is it's diagonal FOV. Another misleading marketing bs spec. The Quest 3 and other headsets have higher FOV.

It doesn't make sense to get it unless you have a PS5 and really want to play the PS5 VR games.

And that is totally fair. But with the recent announcement of the sort of data Meta is going to start collecting on Quest users it is a potentially viable alternative as a wired solution. Especially if your already a PS5 owner.

I wish the 'AR' part of the WMR would have been more cost effective. Dang hololens and similar at $3000-3500. Thankfully I was too poor to pour my time into it.

So win 10 should be unaffected?

Yes and no? They likely won't release an update to remove it, but your not going to be able to download or install it anymore from Microsoft. Plus the entirety of Windows 10 support ends in October of 2025 anyway. Plenty of time to upgrade though.
