Apple has decided to place 1.5B euros in escrow as they fight the European Commission order to pay taxes to the EU for illegal state aid. If Apple loses the appeal they will end up owing 13B euros. We all know Apple is sitting on billions of dollars, but this will still be a nice chunk out of their nest egg should they end up paying. Death and taxes are the only sure things in this world it seems.

The European Commission ordered Apple in August 2016 to pay the taxes it ruled it had received as illegal state aid, as part of its wider drive against what it says are sweetheart tax deals usually used by smaller states in the bloc to lure multinational companies and their jobs and investment.

And scientist are working on fixing at least one of the two of those ;)

maybe if they just paid like they should have they wouldn't owe billions at one time.

Who will they arrest?

There are these things called extradition treaties and there are ways nation states have to seize assets. Plus I am sure Apple still would like to sell their product in there...

Bottom line is its really hard to get away from a nation state that wants you or something you have. There are ways for individuals but not so much a target the size of Apple.

Who will they arrest?

They (EU) doesn't need to arrest anyone to enforce this. They can simply place a lien on some property or assets and collect via that method. Or simply block EU market access as another tactic. They have a range of options that Apple is open to being a business in EU markets.

Couldnt the just leave if they chose to? Genuinely curious.
It's not Ireland, it's the EU that is making them pay. Ireland was actually opposed to this. So to "leave" as you put it, Apple would have to completely exit the entire EU.

All Apple has to do is create a shadow company, lets call it "Apples". Then rebrand the phones with an "S". And somehow through the magic of accounting, funnel the proceeds back to Apple. EZPZ

I dont think that would fool anyone let alone the tax men/women

The EU should fine Ireland instead. They offered the breaks because it benefited them so they should be primarily responsible.

Im just saying I wonder who is really more powerful here. EU needs Apple just as much I would think. Im no fan of Apple, but hate the self destructive EU even more.

Eh, let's not get carried away here. It's not like Apple is a system wide corporation with shiny offices down the gravity wells of the inners, and massive operations across the belt and outer planets.

Apple is much more in need of EU than EU is of Apple. Apple is avoiding US taxes via a 'double Irish' until the latest crackdown when it switched to Jersey (small island between England and France and which the US state is named after). Even though Jersey is not a member of the EU, it has many agreements with the EU and I'm sure the EU could easily pressure Jersey if all else failed to properly tax Apple or remove the company from the country.
