PS4 Jailbreak Might be Coming Soon

Specter released a PS4 4.05 kernel exploit to GitHub today and stated it will allow jailbreaking and kernel-level modification to the PS4 system. However, they are not providing code that allows for homebrew or pirating games. With that said, I'm sure others will be more than willing to utilize this exploit to do just that. Thanks, cageymaru.

Of course, jailbreaking has also become synonymous with breaking fundamental copy protection, allowing pirated software to run on a range of devices from cellphones to today’s cutting-edge games consoles. The flip side of that coin is that people are also able to run so-called ‘homebrew’ code, programs developed by hobbyists for purposes that do not breach copyright law.

Interesting. I could see some uses for a modded ps4 besides pirated content. For one, the ability to play video files would be nice.

ps4 was a huge step back from the ps3 as a media player. I can't remember exactly what the differences were since I haven't had a ps4 in forever, but I remember being quite disappointed when I first got it home.

It is one of the two main reasons why I hang on to my PS3's with the other being I have launch day BC ones. If they could modify the PS4 to just have the same media capability as the Ps3 I would love to throw one of them back in the box to preserve it.

What is it lacking?

I know when the PS4 first came out it could not play 3D blurays. It can now after one of the updates.

I am of two minds about this. I DO believe that people who buy the console should be able to do what they want with it...but I also realize that a hacked firmware opens the gates for modders and cheaters that ruin the online gaming experience for the rest of us who don't mod their hardware. Hopefully, Sony keeps the firmware locked down enough to prevent this...

re: video playback = plex is your friend. But yes, I do sometimes miss the simplicity of the ps3 media player server and no frills media player. Especially for 'adult mating nature documentaries'

re: jailbreak = please let someone make MAME/emulators for PS4. I have a USB drive I use on my laptop now, but it'd be nice to play through big screen without casting/cable hassles.

OK, so you can pirate a game, but what games don't need some sort of patch?

Think of a game like No Man's Sky, the content on disk is completely dislike the patched version. Now most games aren't that significant but everything has a Day1 patch.

Seems like locking down the hardware is sort of wasted effort at this point. As long as PSN is monitoring the integrity of the kernel when it's online leave the offline hardware wide open.

Yep, in the days of huge zero day patches and constant patches after that, it isn't worth the effort. I gave up on all that many many many years ago.

I like seeing it for homebrew but the problem is, people will use it for cheating.

*shrug* it's going to happen sooner or later. I have heard that people playing trials in destiny get ddosed, so there's that already.

Basically the ability to do anything Media center related outside some extremely limited scenarios. Also Audio CD's which is absolutely stupid.

No i'm asking specifically, what can the ps3 do that it cannot. You were the one who said you were purposely holding onto ps3's for their media playing abilities, which, quite frankly, i think is complete bullshit. The ps3 was simply AWFUL at media playback. So i'm wondering why you said that.

You think it is complete bullshit? Yet it has been all over the internet since launch day how much the PS4 won't play...Audio CD's and about 80% of the MP4's I have on my media center will not play on the PS4 because the PS4 is picky as fuck about its encoding.

The PS4 remote is not as good as the PS3. I've read a lot of reviews on the PS4 remote, and it doesn't control some apps. It also will not turn the PS4 on. This fact alone makes it inferior to the PS3 as a media player. They recently released another remote for it that corrects a lot of the issues from the previous remote. But the new remote is a much simpler design, much like the streaming remotes.

So is the ps3.

MP4 is just a container format btw, doesn't really mean much at all unless you specify the video/audio stream.

Well unless you can down grade the firmware this really is a none issue atm. 4.05 is over a year old and going to be tough finding systems with it. Sony might of already locked down against this exploit in previous updates. Ever since the original PS3 jail break it has yet to be hacked so who knows how this will hold up.

Nice, that's very exciting.
It would be really cool to actually run GNU/Linux on a few of them and run them in a cluster - just for fun, of course, Chappie-style. ;)

Using MPI, this is very realistically possible to run a real PS4 cluster!

Why, it's a shitty AMD computer?

Like I said, just for fun, and it would be interesting since it was done in the movie and could be done in real life. :)
Kind of like building a Raspberry Pi cluster, it would be interesting to work with, especially for the high speed and high latency memory transfer rates due to GDDR5 being used for the CPU and how it would effect cluster-based workloads - not something that has really been done before with these systems, specifically.

Would it be practical?
No.

Would it be fun?
Very!

A raspberry pi cluster is made out of raspberry pi's though. A ps4 cluster is made out of amd APU's :) You can go do this right now, you don't need the ps4 casing.

Can confirm won’t play audio CDs.

Tried to stick an old school punk record that I wanted to listen to that isn’t on Spotify and was told that the PS4 doesn’t support it.

Weird, definitely not earth shattering but still an annoyance. I like my PS3 more but I never used it as a media center.

Yes, but the cluster would be using the same PS4 cluster used in the movie Chappie (2015), and each unit would use high bandwidth and high latency GDDR5, which no other x86 system (other than the XBONE and PS4 units) utilize, which makes it kind of unique for its proprietary hardware.
I doubt there would be any real advantage of it, but still, it would be fun to do someday.
