Why so excited for the iPhone X ? It's the same old thing running boring iOS

Nothing of what you mentioned makes it a status symbol, only YOU calling it one in your TLDR. Your dad assumed the phone was better, not +9000 status.

I’m starting to see a trend though, people who have no notion of buying iPhones keep saying that people buy them for status. So maybe it’s only non-iPhone people who still see them as status symbols?

He was convinced that people who have IPhones get them because they are expensive high end devices that cost way more than comparable devices. Is this not your definition of a status Symbol? I would say Mercedes is a Status Symbol, they are real nice cars but driving such a car is certainly showing off your status vs say, driving a ford focus.

Status Symbols tend to be expensive / flashy stylish things that cost more money than they should and are recognized by a large number of people and are an indicator of a persons wealth.

Iphones are no more expensive than many other phones, but are much more recognizable as a sign of wealth due to the serious branding and style. As in my dad's case where he thins people have more expensive devices than his own Pixel XL, just because they have an apple logo on them.

Regardless of your long explanation for assuming what an iPhone is, I’d wager more people buy them because they work and/or use to it.

I'm not bashing the iPhone. It looks pretty cool. I know i do not want to get involved in the ecosystem or itunes but for those that are, it looks like a nice new phone.

Funny it seems like apple is trying to be more like Android, and Google more like apple...

When I showed my dad a fully loaded kia optima he was impressed at what you get for the money. He asked them if they could trade the logo for a 3 pointed Star though lol.

I used to roll my eyes at this statement but in more ways than not it is becoming true.

I think Google went about certain things well and Apple did too. Either way both are good ecosystems right now.

Well, that other iPhone thread didn't last very long...

So sure, all reviews of the camera I've seen so far has the X being slightly better than the 8 Plus. But many had mentioned that the new Pixel 2 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro are best right now.

iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy are pretty much splitting hairs at this point over the best camera. They are all so good.

Agreed. Right now, my ideal phone would be the iPhone X running Android.

I would have thought that before but iOS just works on the X. It just feels different when you use Face ID and gestures. Makes it feel like a different experience and how you interact with the phone.

I know I sound like an i-sheep but this phone is really well done. From the build, the feel in hand, camera and user experience/interaction. It actually feels like something new and different when you use it and that is not something I have had in the past few phones I have had. It was more or less a spec bump that you used the same way which is not bad as each improved on the one before.

Notifications are very poorly done on iOS as Android implementation is light years ahead but is really the only thing I miss at this point as I run all the Gapps (Gmail, Maps, Chrome, Gboard - not really an app but works slick on the X, etc.) on my iPhone and they run very well in the iOS environment.

My ideal phone would just be Android with Google banning all OEM from making custom UI beyond the Launcher app to have the Play Store; so that Google could push updates on all Android devices at once. Also, not having useless battery sucking "true multitasking" would be great, so that Android phones don't need more than 6 GB of RAM to have performance comparable to iOS, and its significantly bigger battery than the iPhone would also mean significantly longer battery life.

More speed tests if anyone cares. Let's just say the results are quite a bit different from the results we saw from the last thread.

For you guys and gals with the new iPhone X, how's battery life ? I know the phone's only been out a few days, but any way to tell if battery life is amazing, good, or just average ?

YouTube vids are all over the board, some saying it bests the 8 Plus by 20%, others saying just on par with the 8 Plus, and many others saying below 8 Plus battery life.

Mine is about the same as my 7+ but still too early to tell as with any new phone you use it way more when you first get it.

No problem getting through a normal day today for me that started at 5:30 AM and will be off at 11:00 PM. Obviously I'm not on my phone all day so YMMV but I'm optimistic that it will be in line with the 7+ going forward.

Maybe my 7+ just had terrible battery life, but my iPhone X demolishes it. I'm averaging 7-8 hours SoT with the X while my 7+ could barely scrape 6 hours.

I usually end my day at 35% on my 7+. I just checked and I have 74% left on my x. I honestly don’t know how and that number doesn’t make sense to me. I have 3.7 hours of screen on time since I took it off the charger this morning and that’s pretty regular for me. If the numbers are right I should easily get 3 days on a charge. The last phone that I had that could do that was the Moto Razr V3.

I actually love pure android, but OEM software puts me off so bad.

I’m glad there are new makers who don’t ruin the software experience.

I’ve been saying this for years - all of the extras and functionality should come as a bundle that you can download off the google play store. All android phones should run bone stock android and companies like Samsung should put everything touchwiz related into an optional package. Hell, they should give you the option of what you want to use on your first boot so people who like the extras have that available to them.

It’s funny, when Samsung got sued to the moon for blatantly ripping off Apple, their first legit skin was amazing. It capitalized on strengths of android and put in functionality while still maintaining performance. Not now, we’ll fir a while anyways. Tons of gimmicks you can’t remove or turn off.

Now they are trying to say Apple only copies them lol.

Well well, I was only about $8 off when I recently predicted the iPhone X was about $350 in parts:

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-a...r-margin-than-iphone-8-analysis-idUSKBN1D62RZ

It's about $357.50 according to a breakdown, and considering Apple has been operating from basically pure profit for many years now (and has like $270 billion in cash reserves as of this morning + they briefly passed $900 billion in valuation on Monday and now sitting at $900.4B as I'm making this post) it literally is an environment of "Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money" at Apple HQ 24/7, damn.

Really good review of the videos.

As someone who wants to get into more vlogging with my phone and Beastgrip, this means a lot to me. Hauling around a DSLR while traveling light is just not that feasible.

Not to mention that the iphone X and 8 are the only phones that can shoot 4k 60fps.

Apple iPhone X battery life test comparison vs iPhone 8 Plus, Samsung Galaxy

https://www.phonearena.com/news/App...rison-vs-iPhone-8-Plus-Samsung-Galaxy_id99585

This test shows what I thought would be the case, the iPhone 8 Plus getting much better battery life than the iPhone X, they even show the X doing better than the S8+ which is know battery champ.

But all the YouTube videos are claiming the X is better than the 8 Plus by like 20% or so on battery, and tons of reviewers saying the X is as good as their 8 Plus, maybe better. Which I found strange, I thought the 8 Plus would easily have better long battery life than the X.

I dont get it either. I wish I took a screenshot of my usage. Almost 4 hours of screen time and 74% battery life left. Pretty much all of my usage is in a reddit client, web browser, pandora, music streaming through bluetooth, and safari browsing genmay. My screen brightness might have something to do with that too as I haven't really put it past ~30%. Im usually a bright screen kind of guy too keeping my 7 plus around 50 or higher.

Check out the Apollo app if you haven't. I like it a lot better than the official Reddit app. It's pretty new, and the creator is updating it often. Just added a pure black dark theme for the iPhone X, too.

Picked up a clear case from Amazon and it's pretty nice and I would imagine that a lot have used it before. It is a Ringke Fusion.

Reason I'm even mentioning it as I was looking at the Ringke Fusion vs the Spigen Ultra Hybrid and they are very similar and I found lots of comparisons on line as they are so similar.

Big difference is the grip. The Ringke is much tackier in a good way. Much better grip as I compared it to a Spigen Ultra Hybrid I bought for my wife's iPhone 6s Plus.

The Spigen has a hard back so it is somewhat slick and the TPU frame is also not as tacky.

The Fusion is not sticky enough to pick up lint from my pocket or anything like that but provides a very nice level of grip compared to the Spigen.

They are both around $10 and I believe the Ultra Hybrid is a bit thicker and with a bit better corner protection.

Either should do the job if you are looking for something clear and with a bit more protection than a skin or the Totallee Thin leather I also use.

I have to admit I hate to put a case on it but in the clear case it actually looks pretty good and with winter coming to Michigan soon and the dry hands that go along with it I figured I should try and find a clear case that would add some grip.

I also have a Caudabe Lucid Clear coming to see how that compares.

Looks pretty nice. I have the Ultra Hybrid on mine, and I don't find it to be too slick. It's a nice balance of size and protection. The Apple store employee that I had install my screen protector looked at my case for a while and mentioned how much he liked it.

I will be replacing it with a carbon fiber Mous case when I get it at the end of the month. Until then, this Spigen is pretty darn nice.

Speaking of screen protectors, the cheap glass ones I bought on Amazon started bubbling around the edge after a few days, so I ended up biting the bullet and paying for the Belkin one that Apple sells in their store. They have a little device that lets them install it perfectly, and apparently having them do install it gives you a lifetime warranty as well. Definitely worth the money for me. I can't tell you how many times I have installed a protector perfectly only to notice some dust that fell half a second before I finished that ruins the whole application.

I had those clear phone cases before, I think mine was jell. But it ended up ruining the exterior of my phone(which was plastic).

Trapped tons of debri inside and because the case wasn’t solid it had a lot of movement. This was on the Atrix.

These are not the jelly type cases.. TPU is a firmer case and no slip once they are on.

Clear cases drive me nuts. I have one that has a clear back and black bumpers installed and its very frustrating when I see smudges, dust, or dog hair get stuck between the phone and the case. Once they start getting in there its almost impossible to keep it completely clean. And most of the time the dust gets in there after the case is already on my phone - no idea how.

I hate clear cases, too. They just look cheap to me. My favorite iPhone case had been the Lander Powell. I used them for my 6+ and 7+.

Don't know if they'll make one for the X.

I ordered a Mous case and this Speck Presidio Grip for my X. I like it. Those thin black lines are rubber, so the case is very easy to hold. Hope the Mous case is at least as good or better.

Have a Caudabe Lucid Clear and also a Caudabe Sheath. The clear looks great but is pretty slippery. The Caudabe Sheath is still my go-to iPhone case (had it on other iPhones) as it is very thin with what I've seen and experienced as great drop protection along with a big upgrade in grip.

I will be buying the PowerSupport Air Jacket when it comes out in a few weeks. Probably the best clear case with drop protection but it nearly impossible to get off. Thankfully they are including an easy-removal tool this time around to alleviate that issue.

Anyone else having trouble with Face ID? It only works about 50% of the time, at best. Usually, it's a lot worse. I've tried redoing my face scan, several times, but still am not having much success. Maybe the X just doesn't like my face. I'm definitely feeling nostalgic for Touch ID.

Works flawlessly for me here, even in the dark. That’s really odd.

This is where it might get uncomfortable, but what is your skin tone color? I only ask because facial recognition has been worse for darker skinned people, and it has been that way for a while. I don't know if Apple could all the sudden come up with facial recognition for dark skinned people that is just as good for light skinned people.

In theory this shouldn't be an issue, since it's using infrared and creating a depth map.

it would definitely be less susceptible to lighting issues, but the algorithmic bias still exist.
It's a legitimate question. I'm your typical white guy with short cropped dark brown hair/eyes, round face, I like long walks on the beach and my favorite color is magenta. I've let a few friends set up Face ID on my phone. It works intermittently for anyone who has tried it. Maybe I got a defective phone?

I feel like my FaceID was pretty terrible for the first day or so. I had initially set it up with my glasses on, but I read somewhere (probably Reddit) that people were having better experiences setting it up without their glasses. I redid the FaceID without my glasses on, and I feel like it immediately lowered the amount of times it failed. It's also my understanding that it's supposed to improve over time. If the scan fails and you put in the correct PIN, it is supposed to remember that scan and unlock next time. You can actually get it to unlock from all sorts of positions by doing this. You basically have to train it, and over time it should get better and better at identifying you.

Google's stock Android Phone app feels like it's from the present current day, fresh and up to date with current software and technology, and the iOS Phone app feels stuck in 2007.

I recall when I had the iPhone 7 Plus earlier this year, and coming from mainly stock Android nexus or OnePlus phones before that, I found the iOS Phone app to be extremely frustrating to use, and navigate around, it took more clicks, more fumbling to get around the iOS Phone app, compared to stock Android's. That's not an opinion, but fact.

How about when a new Phone call comes in while you are browsing the internet, or in the middle of writing a text. On stock Android, it's just a heads up notification pop up menu on the very top of the screen, you can accept or decline or send a message to the caller right there, but it does not interrupt what you are currently doing if on the internet. But with iOS, if your in Safari, and a phone call comes in, that call takes up the entire screen, and takes you away from what your currently doing on the Phone. I found that to be a really poor way for Apple to do that, it should just be a drop down banner on the screen when a new phone call comes in when your in the middle of reading a web page. I am shocked Apple still does it this way in 2017 already.

And those are two things I thought for sure that iOS 11 would update, would be a revised and better Phone app, and complete overhaul of the Notification system. When the iOS 11 preview came in June, I sold my 7 Plus immediately after, just shocked that those weren't addressed by Apple.
