I don't know about you, but at $5000 each, I am sure I will be picking up an iMac Pro for every bathroom in the house! This was the feature breakdown shown. I will let you be the judge.

iMac Pro starting at $4999 - 8-Core Xeon processor - Radeon Vega graphics - 32GB ECC Memory - 1TB SSD - Thunderbolt 3 - 10GB Ethernet

Damn shame some of you could not build a better system at a much cheaper price. I cannot however gripe about the footprint.

Radeon Pro Vega graphics you say!

iMac Pro comes with the new Radeon Pro Vega GPU, the most advanced graphics ever in a Mac. Featuring a new next-generation compute core and up to 16GB of on-package high-bandwidth memory (HBM2), iMac Pro with the Vega GPU delivers up to an amazing 11 Teraflops of single-precision compute power for real-time 3D rendering and immersive, high frame rate VR. And for half-precision computation, ideal for machine learning, iMac Pro delivers up to an incredible 22 Teraflops of performance.

San Jose, California — Apple today gave a sneak peek of iMac Pro, an entirely new workstation-class product line designed for pro users with the most demanding workflows. The all-new iMac Pro, with its gorgeous 27-inch Retina 5K display, up to 18-core Xeon processors and up to 22 Teraflops of graphics computation, is the most powerful Mac ever made. Featuring a stunning new space gray enclosure, iMac Pro packs incredible performance for advanced graphics editing, virtual reality content creation and real-time 3D rendering. iMac Pro is scheduled to ship in December starting at $4,999 (US).

But we do get this really cool animated gif showing airflow, but not much else is revealed for what is inside.

Thought it was 18 core? At least it doesn't look like a garbage can. 22tflops gpu? Hmm interesting.

Remember, this is using the Radeon Pro Vega, not the consumer/gaming Vega.

Add to this that it is an all-in-one design, for those who will be using these for professional use, it isn't a bad value proposition. Sure, I could probably build my own equivalent (non-all-in-one) for cheaper, but this class of systems, even from HP and Dell, run similarly in price, and come with the support needed.

The display is gorgeous and likely 1 to 2 grand. The e5 2667 v4 is 2grand. That's already 3 to 4 grand right there. I think it's a decent value.

The fact that it's an all-in-one and it's almost total lack of repairability/upgradability pretty much negates the 'decent value' of it.

As with most things Apple, this machine is geared toward the 'couldn't care less' crowd with money to burn. Basically all those folks that get overpaid to edit videos and use photoshop for a living.

On the other hand, I won't lie that I would use the crap out of this, and enjoy it, if it just magically showed up in my apartment and I didn't pay for it.

e5 1660 v4 is 1 grand.
Their "base" model is using Xeon version of 7820X. That makes it 700 bucks at most.

At least 2 grand is their pure profit on that model in it's cheapest version. I am afraid to see what it makes on higher Skylake-W versions.

who rememebers when the iMacs were the 'cheap' apple computers?

This is obviously a rushed response to the professionals who were loudly complaining at the last announcement.

But december.. it takes you a year and change to design a computer... with thousands of employees.... and an unlimited budget....

There will be chinese clones out in 4 weeks.

iMac Pro, its silly that they want $5k for the BASE model. I get the 5k monitor is new but since its an AIO you are locked into that hardware and have to pay to upgrade or repair by only Apple customer service F- that. I'm out.
What about the Mac Pro thats 7 years old.....they haven't addressed that and that was supposed to be the thing that was being refreshed. Stupid Apple.

Dell Premier pricing on a Precision 5810 with lesser specs (worse video card, slower SSD): $5144 , without monitor. So... no?
I build computers for friends and family at $200 per build. You could definitely part something together better for cheaper, and remember the base model isn't getting the 18 core Xeon. So... yeah.

For "pro" users a non-upgradable AIO computer that is literally glued together is simply retarded.

I dunno. It's got expandability. Hook up and external GPU. Or raid array. I mean I'd rather focus on making stuff than building or tinkering. Don't get me Wrong I love building boxes but when I want to get things done I want a quiet powerful box and if Apple is in your wheelhouse then this thing fits. I doubt it would bring in converts from the PC world.

But for professional use, wouldn't you want to have control over your monitor size? For example, perhaps you'd like a single 34" ultra-wide, or dual 40" side-by-side screens. Its nice to have options, and particularly for a professional environment, is space that much of a concern? Plus, when your PC and monitor are separate, you can put the box on the floor and not be right next to the heat and noise generated.

But no self-respecting business will be building their own computers. All the Major vendors offer AIO computers in their profession lineups.

I'm trying to figure out how a dual core system with 8gb of RAM and integrated graphics in a beige box (what $200 buys basically) is comparable to this iMac Pro, let anyone anything else in the $5k range. Just doesn't strike me as relevant.

I think he's saying that $200 is his fee for doing the build not including the cost of the hardware.

Interesting thing, for me at least, is the two Vega models listed. I guess one with 56 CU's (3584 "stream processors") and one fully enabled 64 CU's (4096 "stream processors"). Also looks like the HBM2 might be a little underclocked.

Vega GPU
  • Radeon Pro Vega 56 graphics processor with 8GB of HBM2 memory
  • Configurable to Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor with 16GB of HBM2 memory

On-package HBM2 replaces external VRAM, so the GPU can fetch data at up to 400GB/s.

Wait hold on, wait wait wait, hold it hold it hold on... 1080p camera? Lol

And Apple will, in advance, buy out a significant portion of a supplier's output to maintain an inventory channel and preclude competitors. Just look at what Samsung was doing with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835

Dat space grey is nice! Considering that the HP Z820/40 has 12 cooling fans (or more depending on config) you gotta wonder how they cool this thing? Methinks throttling may happen. That said, I'm sure I'd adore it if I could get it for free.

The volume on these is so low they're probably not even getting 1k tray prices from intel.
Samsung was making the 835, i'm sure part of the deal was getting first dibs.

That Xeon has a 135W TDP, and Vega is supposed to be somewhere around a 300W TDP.

I am very curious to see if that elegant little enclosure is going to be able to power and cool all that hot mess...

From the looks of it they basically have 2 GPU coolers that are next to each other. So take a pair of 200W GPU cards, pull their cooling solutions, and put them so the tops of each cooler are next to each other. They can probably make up the other 35W via the huge aluminum backing that's part of the case. There is still airflow through that portion, and it looks like it has "fins" on the exhaust as well.

People do buy these iMacs... I can tell you as a current Student at the University of Maryland with our 40,000+ students on campus daily, every single lab has tons of these iMacs.

In our huge library, there is a floor dedicated to computers and its divided up by windows and Apple computers, guess which section is usually filled up and others not as much?

Living in the DC area, a lot of these companies love all in one computers. But it also helps that we have like 10+ Apple stores around.

Not everyone is computer savvy and people like the simplicity of Apple OS.

All in one computers are the future.

Well you know where half of your tuition is going to now, hah.

Meanwhile my University's classrooms and labs are all monitors with thin clients strapped to the back of them, lol.
