Big-Ass Phones Need To Die In A Fire

Smartphones are like dicks. Everyone knows that, within reason, bigger is better, and the only people that say otherwise are those that enjoy receiving buggery or are trying to justify having a small one themselves. All I know is that I'm happy with my seven incher, even if I do sometimes have to adjust it in my pants when sitting down, and stick with looser fit clothing.

While this is technically true, it ignores a point: the "high end phone with small screen" market seems poorly-served nowadays. Want a phone with >=2GB of RAM and a screen <=4.5"? There's not much out there. Where's the Galaxy S6 mini?
Where there is no demand, there is no supply. Sometimes technology moves, and some consumers do not like the change or do not move on with it.

On the chopping block, where it belongs.

What are you doing on a screen that small that requires that much power? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. You aren't gaming, you're barely typing, you're not doing network site surveys or data analysis. You're reading emails and ignoring people. If you can text (barely) and make/receive phone calls, you're done. Don't you dare tell me you need a supercomputer with a screen you can barely see because it's so small that 80% of its surface area is required to support touch with both thumbs at once.

I went from a 5S to a 6S and so far I don't mind the size increase, though my nerdy little hands hold it in a much less solid and firm way, and there have been some times the gf grabs my arm or whatever and I think the thing's gonna fly out of my hand.

The saving grace was that the 6S fits in the same anti-theft* holster my 5S fit in, so that means no extra spending!

*- Blackberry Z10 holster lol who wants to steal a Blackberry

If you want just a phone, a 4" screen is more than enough.

If you want a phone/web/media player, then a 5.5 is the perfect size.

Anything bigger is a space station, not a phone.

My Note 4 is as big as I can handle and no there is no way I could say that without sounding gay.

I use my phone more like a laptop and use it for everything so I need the extra screen real estate and usually, more storage and more powerful CPU/GPU. If they get any bigger than the 4 tho I think I'll downgrade. The Galaxy S7 is big enough I could live with it.

I am personally grateful for the large phones. I got an iPhone 6 Plus to replace my 4 after having blood vessels burst in both of my eyes. It is real nice to be able to see the screen without having to use the magnifying functions.

Dafuq? How do blood vessels pop in both eyes?

I have a zmax 2 phone with a 5.5" screen and I hate it. it's so big & bulky with a case.

5.1" screen, MAX. That's all I'm buying in the future

I remember when I first go the Note LTE. EVERYONE said it was stupid and was too big. Overheard last week" Look at my new iphone 6 plus!!! Sqweeeee!" Settle down, Bob.

People are retarded. Once you except that fact, you'll be happier.

Entitled means when someone wants things to cater to his very special preferences disregarding everyone else. This guy fills the dictionary definition of entitled to the letter.

He doesn't say he prefers smaller phones, he says bigger phones are stupid, and every new device should fit his definition of what a good size is. If that's not entitled I don't know what is.

I wouldn't bat an eye if he only said he prefers small phones. That's perfectly reasonable position to hold. But he says everything that is larger than his preference shouldn't exist because reasons.

Maybe entitled is a term thrown around frequently these days. But in this case it's perfectly appropriate. Or perhaps it is used more because more people come out of the woodwork with a silver spoon up their ass.

Actually that isn't what entitled means. Are you using urban dictionary or Wikipedia for your definition? Entitled means that you believe that you deserve special treatment or privileges. So thinking that you should be allowed to fuck off on the job watching youtube all day and not be fired as it is your right to be able to fuck around instead of doing your job is being entitled. Thinking that you shouldn't have to follow the laws because your parents are rich is being entitled. I wouldn't call saying that I only like object X so only object X should be made as being entitled. That just means that you don't think anyone should have an opinion other than your own. I will say it is used more now because the current generation thinks things should be handed to them instead of them having to earn it because that is how kids are being raised today. You don't need to try hard, we will just remove the score from sports so that no team loses and everyone gets a trophy so that nobody feels bad. However that is WAY different than the case we are looking at here.

Do you have a long commute on a bus or train? Just curious where you'd be wanting to watch 50GB+ of video. I'd prefer to just watch videos and podcasts on a real screen, either a tv, desktop monitor, or if those aren't available, on a laptop screen.

If you have a good phone you can fill up that much video real quick if you are recording. However I would then assume you would want to take it off quickly then. My phone records in 4K video. I can eat up memory like nothing given a minute needs about 350 - 400Mb at that quality. So your 50GB of video. I would have that gone trying to record a kid's birthday party or a family reunion for around 2 hours. I currently have much smaller 16GB SD cards and just carry my laptop around to keep swapping out SD cards and copy everything over to my laptop while filling the next SD card. Now if not something you are recording, I wouldn't be that hard to imagine people having video podcast or things like that to watch during their lunch break.

Personally when I travel by plane for work I sometimes load a few videos to my phone. that way if I get bored on the flight I can watch a movie or two as since I don't fly first class my 17" laptop doesn't fit too nicely on the tray table.

I understand that both of my cases / examples might be unique, but while you personally might not have that need or desire it is possible that others would.

You have a shitty phone with big bezels. If it wasn't from the dawn on time you'd be fine with the screen size.

Use a Lumia 950 here 5.2" screen and it is in a case that looks like a NES controller. it fits in my shirt pocket just fine. It is about as large as I am willing to go.

It's exactly the same. Entitled means you think you deserve special treatment. Wanting all phones to be made to fit your liking is wanting special treatment. There is nothing different about it except the context. It's like you're saying "don't throw stones if you live in a glass house" only applies to people actually living in glass houses.

music to my ears, the only thing i could think is people with really tight pants want a small phone -- maybe for exercise it could have a case, but im on a 4.7" screen and think 5.5 is the sweet spot.

Honestly my Nexus 6P is as large as I would like to go, and I wouldn't mind if it were just a smidge smaller - I usually have a headset on if I am making/receiving calls, but when I don't it is dangerously large to attempt to use as an actual phone. For all the android features the size is fine for one handed use as I have what can only be described as pork-paws.

My preference is 4.5 - 5", hopefully they still continue to offer great android phones in that size.

RE: storage space - When I had 16 and 32G devices I had to constantly manage my space and got so sick of needing to do that all the time. With a 64G phone I can carry a good chunk of my favorite MP3 collection and tons of photos (which I really like having with me) while keepinng about 19G free without needing to manage much at all. I am slowly chipping away at my free space but not nearly fast enough to need to manage it. If I had a 128G device I would probably put more music and photos on it. I love having those two collections with me.

the iPhone6 (non plus) seems like the perfect size for me.. I would probably end up cracking the screen on anything larger due to all the laborious work I do with my phone pocketed.

I'm always mad that no one makes a 6" screen in case my 1520 dies and I need to move away from windows phone. max seems to be 5.7

love my 1520, the big screen makes it easier to type with and see shit

hoping for a 6" surface phone.

No, I'm not doing complex stuff. But I use a fair range of apps, and it's really really annoying when switching from one to another, and apps get pushed out of RAM.

Oh, if only phones came in multiple sizes so that you could buy the size you want. Also, people who complain about big phones are generally trying to use them as phones ... Amateurs :D

I share the authors frustration that many high end models come only in phablet form.

I will never buy a phablet. A requirement for me is to - during single hand use -reach the top opposite side of the screen with my thumb when the bottom corner is in the palm of my hand.

My Galaxy S3 was the perfect size for me, with my large hands. Most modern phones are just too big, even in the sub-phablet size.

I tolerate a 5.2" phone, but imho, 4.7" is perfect. I will never under any circumstance buy a phablet.

And no, I don't care about the storage space. I always buy the smallest amount available. I currently have a 32gb Nexus 5x with 24GB free.

All that being said, I don't understand the hate for other people's choices. If other people want large phones let them have them, instead just lobby phone manufactures and make them understand that there is a market for top end specification phones in normal sizes.

In general, women do not have deep pockets like men. Her blue jeans are about half as deep as mind. Maybe they make men's pockets bigger so we can play pocket pool? Hell, doesn't make any sense to me. Don't even get me started on the fake pockets in some of her jeans. WTH are those for?

I've often asked these questions myself. I'm not sure anyone truly knows.

My wife also has a 6 plus and it doesn't fit in anything she owns so she just holds the damn thing. It's beyond me.

^This is exactly my reasoning as well. I honestly don't want to be holding my phone all the damn time. When I put it in my pocket, I don't want it to be this big bulky thing that is cutting off my balls. I DONT want to feel it in my pocket, and I don't wear incredibly baggy jeans. Maybe some of your guys wear baggy jeans, I'm not judging you, I just don't. I also run, and exercise on a regular daily basis, and I don't like carrying something so heavy/bulky.

SO to me, ideal size is 4.5-5' screen. The Note or any other 5.5'+ screen is waaay to big for me.

Problem is your looking at it like a phone. I'm half-way convinced it's become a fashion accessory.....

IMO none of the existing phones are large enough. I have several work scenarios where I need to switch to classic desktop views and my iPhone 6+ just doesn't have a big enough screen. I use a bluetooth headset for calling (which I do often - conference calls and such) so the size of the phone doesn't matter one bit when dealing with a call.

My ideal phone would be something about the size of my nook (half way between iPad mini and iPhone 6+). My hands are large enough that I could almost onehand the whole nook, and the nook fits in the pockets of cargo pants, so carting it around wouldn't be an issue. Hell, if they made a surface mini just a little smaller than an iPad mini with LTE calling and some kind of docking station (or integrated mini display port and a usb port) I'd switch and never look back, even if it was just a hair too big. If I could dock it, I'd just use the phone for everything except serious computing, which I have a desktop for anyway.

really? I have no problems carry my lumia 1520 in my pants pocket, even with dress pants. Unless your wife has the smallest purse imaginable it would fit just fine.

It fits in her purse, when she's using one (although it doesn't fit in her clutch). But it absolutely does not fit in any article of clothing she owns.

It would be nice if manufacturers would offer some smaller offerings, yet still packing a punch with latest technology. I think 4.7-5" is perfect size, and I wanted to go with the new HTC 10, but, too big :( Even Galaxy S7 is too big. I am not a fan of big phones. My HTC M8 is as big as I'd ever want to go, so I guess I'm stuck with it.

Oddly enough Apple offers more choices in that segment. 4.7" 6S or 4" SE.

a well constructed 5 to 6 inch phone is not big at all.. if its bezel central, then sure.
what phones need is more battery.. like 2x the average of the norm for phones that size.

Has to be the silliest post ever.

Just because the iPhone 6 (which is really too big quite frankly) is the user's choice that sets the "bar" with regards to what is "too big". Hilarious!!

If the iPhone 6 had a 5" diag screen, that would've been the bar... this is just too much...

For some strange reason, just like with laptops, we prefer huge screens. I used to joke about building a special dolly for next generation laptops so they could be hauled around like luggage.

Thin flat phones are designed for girl's pockets (and usually thinner girls... read into that what you may). They are not designed to be held and used. That's just the way it is.

Sorry guys (and "real" girls) out there, you frankly are *not* the market for mobile phones.

Apple gets a pass because we're not allowed to criticize anything they do... sigh... so here's to awkward, always breaking thin, large screen flat phones.... it must be right, Apple said so.

You've sold you soul to Apple... learn to adapt to what they have in store for you.

I find that most women's clothing completwly lacks pockets, so this would be a problem regardless of phone size. :p

It's stupidity really. You shouldn't have to use both hands to reach the entire screen.

If you have to contort your hand, or slide the corner of your phone out of your palm in order to reach the opposite corner of the screen with your thumb single handed, the phone is quite simply too large for your hands.

I'm 6'3" and have pretty damned large hands, and I find that 4.8" is about as large as I can go comfortably. In the 5.0 - 5.2" range I can reach the opposite corner of the screen, but I have to stretch my hand and slide the lower corner out of my palm, which puts the phone at risk of being dropped.

Anything above 5.2" is quite frankly unusable.

Someone in here said that phones need to be bigger and that the smaller ones just aren't made to be used. I'd argue it's the opposite. Even if you have huge hands, anything above 5.2" is completely unusable. For most men this will likely be 4.5" or smaller. For most women 4.0" or smaller.

If you can't use a phone single handed and reach everywhere on the screen while doing so, it's usefulness is quite frankly very limited.

I wouldn't take a phone larger than 5.2" if it were free. Heck, you couldn't even pay me to use one.

How do you use a soft keyboard with any kind of reliability if you have large hands? I'm 6'4" and I couldn't reasonably use the soft keyboard with my thumb on my Wife's old iPhone 5 - my thumb is as big as 2 or 3 letters. If I really wanted to type, i'd have to use 2 hands just so I could use my index finger to hit the keys, and even that wasn't reliable.

The 6+ is just barely big enough. For holding it you never use your palm, you rest the phone at base of your fingers, which leaves a whole knuckle worth of finger past the phone. This gives your thumb easy access to the whole phone, with room to spare and no risk of dropping the phone. Using this same technique to hold the phone I can almost one hand an ipad mini - I lose out on about 5-10% of the top left portion of the screen.

It doesn't matter if your finger covers multiple letters when you type. It registers the button press at the center of the contact between your finger an the screen.

As long as you are properly centered, even if you have bratwurst sized fingers you should be fine.

With my large hands I've never had any trouble typing on any well implemented touvh keyboard, regardless of how small. I switched away from Apple a few years back. My iPhone 4 was my last Apple product. I actually found that I could type better on that keyboard than any subsequent Android phone I've had, even though they were much larger and seemingly more appropriate fory hands. Android keyboards have gotten better since then, but IMHO they haven't quite caught up with the iPhone keyboard. The keyboard is actually the only thing I miss from my Apple phone days.

Being able to reach the opposite side if the screen is much more important than having large letters on the keyboard, IMHO.

Got no problems with the size of my Galaxy Note 4. The resolution might be overkill, but the screen size is just right. I can use it one-handed no problem, and while typing my thumbs can easily access the full on-screen keyboards I use. Had an S3 and an HTC Evo before that, after a while both seemed too small. I might even be able to handle something a bit bigger than a Note 4. There needs to be phones of all sizes on the market so that consumers can have choices based on their preferences. Instead of whining and complaining and hoping certain particular phones sizes die off, dude should recognize that no two people are exactly the same, and what works for him might not work for others. The more choices there are, the greater the chances are of finding a phone size that works best for you. If this asswack doesn't like large phones, he doesn't have to fucking buy them. He doesn't speak for everyone. His preferences aren't the same as mine, but he'd like the entire market to go along with what he feels is best. Fuck dat.
