Fallout 4

So I'm slightly out of touch with all the CPU stuff, what makes it a bottleneck? Low cache amounts or something?

nvidia inspector says card zero is 3.0 @ 2.0x16 and card two is 3.0 @1.1x16 whatever that means.

interesting...card have different bios revisions. never noticed that.
Card 2 running at PCI-E 1.1 bandwidth would definitely be an issue. Do you have both cards installed in the blue colored slots on your motherboard? Because they need to be for the full bandwidth.

yea they are in the blue slots.

the full length white slot is my sound card.

the 1.1 might be because the second card isn't in use while I'm just looking at the desktop.

EDIT:
Yes tha tis why the one was 1.1, once I go into a game they are both 2.0

My system runs this anywhere from 25-50 fps outdoors. Not bad for an old system at 2560 x 1440 but I think I may run it on my big screen at 1080p so that I can smooth it out a bit and play on the couch.
Not fully enjoying the Sanctuary clean up. Took up my last hour of gameplay trying to figure that out and I'm still not done.

A trick for fast cleanup is to open the console and type "scrapall" without the quotes. HOWEVER: use this with caution... if you do not have Local Leader perk lvl 2 this can make things difficult as scrapall will wipe any workstations except the red one. You have to have Local Leader perk lvl 2 to build new workstations.

Does this clean up the piles of debris and vegetation? If I could only hand my settlers a broom and machete and say GET TO WORK SCRUB!

It cleans up everything that can be manually scrapped by the player.

Does anyone know the current must have tweaks and setup tips for Fallout 4 performance? Not so much mods, but fixes and workarounds for known issues.

I took a month long break from Fallout 4 and I'm trying to get back up to speed before I jump in again. Plus this time, I have a new machine with a GTX 980 Ti to fully enjoy it.

Previously, on a 2013 Mac Pro with AMD D700s, using Windows 8.1 bootcamp, I had to settle on roughly mixed medium-high settings for 40-48fps, full AA, god rays low or off. I've now replaced my Mac workstation with a Dell workstation, equiped with an EVGA GTX 980 Ti SC+ and Xeon E5-2687w V3.

Last I recall, one of the biggest problems with Fallout 4 on release was stuttering when moving the camera, even at 60fps or just below. One solution was running in windowed mode, borderless. There might of been other tricks to smooth out the game, but often not recommended unless you could maintain 60fps at all times. With all the patches over the last month, is this even a concern anymore?

Currently have the beta installed and updated.

Thanks for any advice.

Turn down/off god rays, and turn down shadow view distance.

I think that's mostly what there is...nothing amazing has come to light performance-wise AFAIK.

I have to say the graphics were a buzz kill but after 15 hours in game I have been having some fun with the game but I can only image what this game could be with a modern engine.

Yeah, God Rays to Low or Off.

Shadow View Distance to Medium.

That's about it.

Yea, it seems to need a 980 OC'd to max things or super-max things. Although with things maxed it does put on quite a bit of a show, sans some textural things (like bathroom stall doors and computers that look like poo no matter what).

I settled on some super-max settings (needs FO4 Settings Manager to do)...keep 50-60FPS in urban areas and drops to 30s-40s in the boonies-but that is because I have a vegetation mod installed that greens up the countryside.

A 980 to max out? Maybe at 1280x720. I have a 980ti on a 3440x1440 monitor and if I bump it down to 1920x1080 I can turn Godrays on low and it won't completely ruin the game by being a slideshow when I get near urban areas. Before I got my ultrawide and ran 2560x1440 it was a slideshow with the game auto detecting settings and putting godrays and shadows on low. And this is with the mod Vivid Fallout to reduce texture size.

I think with the latest patch that my performance actually decreased, even keeping the new features disabled, but I have not been able to play much at all since that patch. Planning on playing some today and seeing if the game still matches what I experienced earlier.

Must be a configuration or driver problem. Them's my results on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB x64 at 2560x1600. With a gaggle of texture mods installed (40+ at this point). Could also be that because W10 LTSB is so thinned down from retail W10, things simply run better on it.

Windows 10 Enterprise "Super LTSB" TH2 here. No configuration problem that I know of, that was with the vanilla game and no changes to the INI files. Even after doing every mod that I could find to increase performance, the game still becomes a slideshow in places. :(

My 980 will max things out at 60fps for most environments. The catch is, when you end up in an area with a ton of god ray effects, the FPS will be cut in half.
That and the central area near the Combat Zone/Freedom Trail pretty much always bogs down no matter what my settings are.
If I'm just wandering around, I'm at my FPS cap 80+% of the time.

Could also be cooling related. My 980 is watercooled so there's no worrys about thermals. I'm scratching my head here.

Could also be your standard for gameplay are higher than mine. Or have a more responsive monitor than my ZR30W, and it shows dropping FPS more.

My card is BIOS modded to remove all thermal limits, power limits, voltage limits, and boost is disabled, so at load it stays at 1392MHz with the same voltage applied, so it could never be cooling related. :)

As soon as the game dips below 60FPS input lag is increased significantly and it is a slideshow. Even 59FPS is laggy and stuttery. This is with in-game Vsync disabled and forced in NV control panel, I've tried triple buffering both on and off. Monitor is a Dell U3415W.

That is very odd. Have you checked the clocks to make sure those are somewhat static while you are actually gaming and seeing this behavior?

If 59FPS is "laggy and stuttery" and you're at 1400mHz twith a more powerful card then something is very whacked. Granted you're pushing a great deal more pixels than I am, OTOH you have a more powerful card apples-apples (my 980 is at 1450mHz core).

Only time I ever see lag/stutter is starting VATS in a vegetation environment. And like I say my framerate drops in those environments to start with.

I have to do this to get a solid 60 fps on a 980Ti at 1600p on a very average looking game to put it nicely, its been a couple months since release what the fuck is Bethesda doing that these fps issues still occur and are not being addressed in the patches. Fail graphics engine needs to be taken out back and shot.

On my end, I clicked the High Preset at 1080p / TXAA / Borderless Window.

Then disabled Motion Blur and DoF, along with God Rays to Low, and Shadow Distance to Medium.

I average high 50's just running around but it can dip into the low 40's, so I use Bandicam to limit my fps to 50 to balance it out.

Works pretty well considering the age of my machine....

(just another persons perspective on performance)

I had to walk away from this game. Engine wise it ran smooth at 4k@60hz with highest settings, but the game mechanics themselves, especially relating to the Settlements (great idea, but poorly implemented), felt so broken and unfinished it was more frustration then fun. I rarely do not finish a game, but after 86hrs I couldn't take it anymore.

Shame, because I usually enjoy this franchise.

lol, 86 hours and you can't finish it now?

screw the settlement stuff, you don't need to do it.

I enjoyed the settlements the second time around, although I mainly used them to generate tons of caps.

My settlements allow me to be a slum lord, I would not be able to have that experience without this game.

Thing is, you really don't need caps for the most part, other than to buy a few choice unique weapons and some of the rarer ammos, maybe.

Ultimately I have to agree that the settlement stuff, which it can be potentially fun to set up fortresses and whatnot, doesn't have a huge impact on the game as a whole. Setting up water purifiers early can get you a lot of cash really fast.

Looking for the Eddie Winter Tapes is Bullshit. I will be using console commands for that when I get to it again.

I found most of them naturally from just searching police stations. Once you get the actual quest from Valentine it will have markers for most (all?) of the stations, and then you can just check the ones you haven't visted yet. Didn't take me long at all to find the few I was missing.

Just started the game a couple weeks ago. 70 hours in, having a blast. I like doing all the little side quests. I have supply lines between all my settlements. Most of them have 3-4 links to other. Even though I've been to Diamond City, I still haven't started the Nick Valentine quests. I'm just having too much fun building up settlements, exploring, and leveling up my character (currently level 28).

Despite all the supply lines I keep running out of key resources such as steel, ceramic, oil, aluminum, and copper. I like to build and make my settlers happy. I've turned the Drive-in movie theater and Sanctuary into walled fortresses. Sanctuary never gets attacked even though I'm doing the water purifier trick and making 100+ in resources compared to defense. If it does, I probably never know about it because the raiders eat missiles before they do anything. At the drive-in I've built a couple barracks with a bunch of beds and turned the whole thing into a market. It also is the most centralized of the supply routes and everything goes back to it. The drive-in also get's attacked constantly, but I never get alerts because if anyone shows up they have turrets and 20 traders with rifles dash out the front gates to attack them. The only reason I know is because it happens every few days I go by to pick up caps from the stores.

Another funny thing to having so many supply lines: I will be exploring, and random nukes keep going off due to a super mutant suicider attacking then get to watch a couple Brahmin run past. It's quite hilarious to watch.

Fortunately, despite my incessant need of resources. I've found quite a few places where these resources respawn in quantity every few days of game time.
Steel- Corvega Plant 3rd floor. The conveyor belts have a couple dozen rod ends that respawn. The Atomitoys Headquarters also has about a dozen Giddyup Buttercup Horses in the basement but I'm not sure if they respawn.
Ceramic- Super Duper Mart's kitchen and small cafe respawns plates and coffee mugs. The Nuka Cola Quantum's in the last aisle on the tipped over shelves respawns too.
Oil- The outside entrance of Super Duper Mart has a rack of Mr. Handy fuel that respawns with a bunch of canisters. Hardware Town's rack of paint respawns new blue and yellow paint, so you will get oil and aluminum.
Aluminum- Hardware Town's paint cans mentioned previously. Federal Ration Stockpile also respawns all the aluminum cans (as well as all the food). Corvega Plant also has a few coolant caps that respawn across the various floors.
Copper- Like Ceramic, found everywhere but you just have to find the right items. Best places I've found are ones with lots of electronics or medical/chemistry equipment. For the most part I just re-visit certain certain buildings such as med-tek research. Supposedly Wattz Consumer Electronics also has a bunch of copper items, but I haven't visited it yet.
Nuclear Material- I get this from various high tech electronics I find, but one sure fire place it respawns consistently are any locations with Glowing Mole Rats such as the Rotten Landfill. One shotgun shell for nuclear material in a pinch is a fair trade in my opinion.

I'm also on a mission to rid the wasteland of these stupid fucking pipe guns. They are literally the only item in game that I've found to be more useful scrapped than for their original intended purpose. With the scrapper perk I get everything out of them. I don't bother selling them for caps since even a legendary one might get me a pitiful 100 caps. I pick up at least 100 caps just scrounging drawers in any buildings I visit.

this...I didn't spend any caps at all during the game..not one. never needed too.

I have never seen a legandary pipe gun, although I have seen a legendary pipe revolver. And if you do the perks right you can use those shitty pipe guns to take down super mutants. But I guess it depends on how you like to do your ammo

I use caps to buy more powerful ammo, while selling some other ammos to get caps.

Longest and toughest battle of my current character's life happened today. Playing on Very Hard difficulty. Haven't picked-up any mags or Bobbleheads during this playthrough and have only taken perks for base S.P.E.C.I.A.L., radiation, sneaking, non-automatic weapon damage and weapon mods. I do not use Nukes nor Missle Launchers nor Fast Travel.

Ran into a Legendary Deathclaw and even with my Legendary Mod modded Railway Rifle (Two Shot, Explosive) it took 7 direct body hits along with what Cait fired at it with her Legendary Combat Shotgun to put the beast down. Turned around and there were a half-dozen Raiders firing at us from in-front of wood shacks near a tower with an alarm.

We were exchanging rounds with the Raiders when the thump, thump, thump and growl of another Deathclaw came into hearing range. Started heading for the tower with the siren to set-up a good defensive position when I got blocked by yet another Deathclaw and beat feet back towards the shacks. Bastard grabbed me, clawed and took 1/2 of the 2/3 of health I had. Fuck. Hit the stimpack dodged back and forth until reaching the shacks. Cait is fucked. No way I can reach her.

If that weren't enough another goddamn Deathclaw is running down the cliff and starts taking on the Raiders.

Switch over to the non-modded The Last Minute and started firing at the weakest Deathclaw. Dropped the bastard with a dozen or so crappy placed shots. Two of the six Raiders had been put down by this point so that made the situation a bit easier if you could call it that.

Ran out of the shacks, stimpacked Cait to get her into the battle again and reached the tower only to find Cait had been put down again from one of the Deathclaws and Raiders. Damnit. Started chucking frag grenades into the mess. Another Raider drops but there are still four remaining plus the two Deathclaws.

Ran from the tower to the shacks dropping frag mines as I went and stimpacked Cait to get her back in action. Hit the shack with minimal health loss (maybe 15%), turned around and Cait is down again. Fuck. Switched over to the non-modded Legendary Two Shot Combat Rifle picked-up a couple of days ago from a Legendary Ghoul and concentrated fire on the strongest of the two remaining Deathclaws. Dropped him after I don't know how many reloads along with what the Raiders were putting into him.

Two Raiders started firing at me while another Raider was dealing with remaining Deathclaw. Cait wasn't being fired upon and got back-up to start firing on the nearest enemy which was the final Deathclaw. What does she do? Gets up close and melee's the bastard while firing at it occasionally with her shotgun even though I equipped her with a minigun and 3000 rounds of 5mm ammo and fucking drops again...
FacePalm.gif

Deathclaw rips two of the Raiders a new one so there is only the Deathclaw and one Raider to deal with. The Deathclaw hits a frag mine I dropped earlier and is immobilized. Took him down with a few shots of the Legendary Two Shot Combat Rifle. Last Raider is taking cover behind one of the shacks and tosses a Molotov Cocktail which takes 30% of my already low health because I was a dumbass and didn't hit a stimpack.
FacePalm.gif

Hit stimpack, crouched then exited behind shack so I can sneak around behind the bastard's position. Raider moved and is now looking for me in the shacks from the outside. Moved to where I was at the corner of the left shack when looking from the tower and stood still. Waited until the Raider moved to the corner of the shack then blew his head off with one shot from a combat shotgun. Saved game.

The battle lasted approximately 20 minutes. Between the dodging, firing upon the enemy and spending time saving Cait it was the toughest battle I'd ever been in even though I have 788 hours into the game. I'll never forget this.
