Official Acer [XB270HU] 27" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync IPS ULMB Monitor Thread

The chance of getting a glow/bleed free IPS from any vendor is very low.

I have checked around ~110 dell IPS monitors at work in darkness at night (for the good cause of taking the best ones for myself :) ).

Out of those, how many were bleed/glow free? zero.
Around 5 were great ones with minimal bleed/glow.

The trick with IPS is to only use them in well lit rooms that cancel the bad blacks/glow/bleed or return them again and again until you get lucky.

I just got one of these from Amazon 2 days ago and haven't noticed any issues (haven't gone hunting for them, though).

ULMB is pretty nice but I do get some flickering when looking at really bright scenes, like the sun shining in skyrim (slowly panning up to it and back will produce it). It's nice otherwise.

When using ULMB and v-sync, it says "up to 120hz" and my framerate is also locked here. Is this a known thing? I thought it only worked up to 100hz on this display.

Has anyone put a colorimeter on a newer revision of these and measured the contrast? Or owned an old and new revision and measured both?

I would be interested to know if the contrast has increased since the first revisions, most newer reviews measure around 1150:1, the old TFTcentral review measured 1050:1... Most reviews of the MG279Q are around 1220:1...

1150:1 vs 1220:1 is so small even pedantic people like me would not notice, but 1050:1 vs 1250:1 according to TFTcentral is a significant amount and other than being an older panel revision or variance between panels anyway I have no idea why the Asus would be better for contrast as the panel is the same??

I did have 2 Mg279Q recently and noticed one was better contrast than the other... No colorimeter currently to measure unfortunately as I need to borrow it off my friend again.

Yeh I read the new models have 120hz ULMB... Still flickers at 120hz does it?

newer batches work up to 120 Hz. can you capture the flickering on video? i'd like to see it.

did you post a pic of this red vertical line in here? if so give me link.

you=everyone? I rest my case.

So people with defective panels are required to post images of their screens, otherwise they are trolls or ROG Swift shills? I'm waiting for pictures of those 22 perfect panels you mentioned.

Just ordered a Acer XB270HU for 598.00 no tax special

sorry asus but from the rumor i have heard you are using the same panel as the MG279q and your ULMB is not as good as the Acer XB270HU

Since the ROG PB279q wont be out for another 2 months and for 800.00

big no no

WI was going to possibly get a MG279Q or a PB279Q but from what i have heard the Asus PB279Q is going to use the same panel as the MG279Q but with just gsync added. Also from reviews the Acer XB270HU has lower input lag with ULMB and the MG279Q had some sort of ULMB issue

Also for 200 .00 less i could not say no to acer

dude... what

the MG279Q uses the same panel as the XB270HU, and you're comparing refurb price to brand new price... the PG279Q isn't even out yet so we don't know how the ULMB on it performs, but it will probably be the exact same as the XB270HU with a different housing. the MG279Q doesn't even have ULMB or any kind of motion blur reduction feature at all.

Hope you enjoy! btw why would you feel bad for people who bought an overlord monitor? Those things launched like 3 years ago and they were selling pixel perfect panels for around ~$300, a very reasonable price.

Can you answer questions... I am having a hard time deciding what to get (acer or wait for asus PG279Q, already tried the MG279Q)

How is the sharpness? Does it have sharpness control? (I noticed the sharpness on the Mg279Q was either too sharp or too blurry)

How are the gamma controls? (the MG279Q didn't have any)

What is the default color accuracy like?

Can you get good color accuracy using the RGB controls without lowering contrast?

Has anyone measured contrast on a new revision screen?

If they were selling a bit cheaper I would be more likely to try one.. they seem to have gone UP in price recently not down... Maybe because of the amount of returns?

I have read all the reviews already... Maybe I am over thinking it... But its a lot of money for one 27" screen... If the Asus was available now and was a similar price I would buy the Asus... but I don't know if I should wait or just get an Acer now hmmmmm

Also the TFT central review is 6 months old, where newer reviews of the same monitor it gets higher contrast... that review it looks low compared to the Asus MG279Q... ~1050:1 vs ~1250:1 is quite a big difference...

I am surprised more people have not measured a new revision Acer screen with a colorimeter...

if you've read the tftcentral review then why are you asking multiple questions that were already answered in it? you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference between 1050 and 1250 in a side by side comparison, let alone by seeing only one of the two. seems to me like you can't wait, so i think you should just buy a refurb acer for $600 then resell it when the PG279Q comes out if it's better (or if you just want the asus housing) and you should be able to recoup the entire cost of the acer.

Hence why i did not go with MG279Q for 599+ shipping

I will take a refurb over that crappy freesync monitor i will never use AMD anyway. Arent they going out of business ? btw Fury card was a failure

The only thing i will miss is the extra HDMi port to run games on consoles. But i guess thats why i bought a 4k Vizio for 400 bucks walmart refurb also that runs 120hz and was a deal

I already said... because newer monitors are newer revisions and measure differently in different reviews... So I was wondering if anyone has measured a newer revision screen and could confirm if the contrast was better on newer screens... 1050 > 1250 is not a lot but it is significant when the main problem with IPS is contrast so more = better. I was also trying to understand WHY there would be a difference (other than panel revisions or variance with different panels) as they are the same panel. Any differences I am trying to weigh up buying an Acer now or waiting for the Asus... Unfortunately the amount of info on the Asus is not a lot and there is no info on release date or price.

Is the sharpness on this screen good? there is no sharpness option...

Where do you get a refurb in the UK?

I assume they would be returns with bad bleed etc. so prob not good ?

3 years ago rofl

more like less than a year ago when they started offering 144hz not guaranteed monitors for 500 bucks. Good luck trying to get one they are never in stock and would not make any sense over the current gen monitors that use free sync or gsync at a real 144hz

reading your posts causes me a great deal of pain.

Can confirm, the monitor I bought a week ago with april manufactured date has ulmb @ 120hz

You guys sure it wasn't the latest drivers that enabled this ?

wait, how did you enable 120hz ULMB? thru NVCP or Monitor OSD?

you might want to check that again, I doubt it that it works at 120hz.

ULMB is through the monitor button, so a driver can't affect that, right? It was probably a trivial firmware change in the screen.

mine is still 100hz, and I am using the last NVidia driver, so it has nothing to do with the driver.

I think they are selecting ULMB in NVCP and have 120/144hz on desktop are fooling them selves into believing that ULMB is turned on and working at those resolutions.

If it's just a firmware update I wonder if it would be possible to get the update from Acer support and apply it ourselves.

Looks like it's being reported that 120hz ULMB has been ninja added in the April builds and on:

link to a report with a picture:

so it is real, thx for the info.

how does one update monitor firmware? can it be done with this Acer?

With my ASUS PQ-321 you plugged a flash drive into the USB port and it auto-updated itself on a reboot or something like that.

I have no idea if this Acer has a similar capability with its USB ports.

It could also be like the BenQ XL2730Z where you had to send your monitor back to BenQ and have them do the update. But seeing some of the horror stories of people who sent their monitor back to Acer only to have it be sent back in the worst possible shipping state and end up damaged/broken, I think I'll just keep mine and stay with 100Hz ULMB.

Does anyone with this display have Neverwinter Nights 1? Curious to know if it can get into 120 Hz mode properly. Kudos if someone has the answer! Using a displayport with my BenQ 120 Hz panel leaves me at 100 Hz while DVI-D lets me do 1920x1080 @ 120 Hz. Wonder if it's a DP issue itself or the monitor + DP.

I bought a refurb XB270HU from Acer for $600. Big mistake I guess as it seems they're simply sending out returned units that work but have all the issues people have been returned them for, horrible light bleed, dirt under the panel and dead pixels. This one had them all. Build date was April. It's going back today. So word of warning for anyone trying to get by on the cheap. Personally, I'm going to just hold off for the Asus version of this, maybe it'll have better QC.

I will keep you updated how mine turns out. Its definitly a gamble ...but habe had pretty good luck in the past. Biggest risk was buying an open box amazon warehouse deal for a 54" F8500 samsung plasma. Came delivered in perfect condition and saved over 1k back in late 2013

Sounds good. I had a good experience last time with Acer when I bought an XB270H 1080p refurbed from them. Other than a few scuffs on the bezel, the display is flawless which lead me to think this would be the same. I think a lot of it is the sheer amount of returns for the XB270HU that they're just off loading them and hoping people won't notice. When a product less than 4 months old is readily available refurbished at a decent cost reduction something seems fishy. Good luck to you.

So it looks like your mileage may vary with the included DisplayPort cable the monitor comes with. The cable is a 6ft BizLink e164571-ks, and it looks like that may be the same cable that has come with other monitors like the ASUS PB278Q - and I've seen mixed reports of successes and failures with DisplayPort on that monitor as well. Maybe it's a hit or miss cable?

I've been spending the last couple days troubleshooting some terrible random black screen flashes (that today led to a completely fuzzed display), and then I came across this thread on EVGA with a number of users having the exact same problem. It was resolved for a number of the posters by getting a different cable - the most success being with 6ft cables, not 10ft.

I've got a new cable on order that was on the DisplayPort.org certified list (6ft), and I'll post back if that resolves the issue...

strange, I never seen a single black screen flash on my Acer.

Then it means you got a good cable lol. Working DP cables that come with monitors seem to be a problem lately like with the 40 inch Seiki pro, monitor people were having problems until they got a new cable. Also remember a few people (myself included) having problems with the DP cable that came with the Samsung 590D.
