There was a time not-so-long-ago that it seemed that the Xbox could never be dethroned as the Top Dog of consoles, but along comes the PS4 to throw down the gauntlet, eyeing the bestselling console of all-time crown.

The PS4 surprised a lot of people at launch, and it continued to do so throughout its first two years as it solidified its place at the top of the current generation of consoles.

Which sounds strange for those of us who know how well consoles have sold in the past and how long this generation is going to last and also have graphs and charts to look over.

Morpheus (still a codename) would have to become perfect and gigantic and get a proper library, they'd have to convince Capcom to put Monster Hunter on it and Level5 to carry Yokai Watch over and buy whatever Konami has to offer when they sell off their IPs and then maybe we could see the PS4 hit a hundred mill a bit into the life of the PS5.

Funny its almost as if having media abilities is a downside for consoles.

I got a PS3 because it could play bluray and has a remote... Now PS4 doesn't and I am considering a XB1 because it does.

ha end played a truly great game in years... Consumers getting easy to please.

huh?

I've been contemplating getting a ps4 but no exclusive game interest me unless they did another God of War series on PS4.

I thought both a huge disappointment and have bought neither.

I don't think I'm the only one.

I own both PS4 and Xbox One

Xbox One software is beyond the beyond compared to PS4. Make it look like a child's toy - which I agree is probably why it's selling more. Easier gadget for consumers to grasp. Xbox One might be ahead of its time by a little bit.

Let's see what happens when HoloLens comes out.

Talked to a few guys at Gamestop and two of the employees told me they've sold over 90+ PS4's to about 5 or 6 Xbox Ones the last few weeks.

despite all of this I am still holding on to my idea of buying an xbox one. I just really like the halo series and several other exclusives and there are zero ps4 exclusives that even excite me. theres controversy about the ps4 version of the witcher 3 displaying at 1080p while the xbox is 900p. The ps4 displays halo at 0p...

You probably need to do a system update
The ps4 did have pretty shit playback for some reason upon release some movies would just not play on it. They both had issues microsoft just had less media issues than sony did upon release although i'm pretty sure they are equal now of days.

That is all you need to know then. The decision of which consume you buy or buy first should always come down to which one has the games you want to play.

I went ps4 first for that exact reason, however xb1 remains on my list as well once there are a few more games on it I want to play.

Well, I love my xbox one and it is outselling the Xbox 360 in the same time frame. However, if the PS4 becomes the best selling console, good for them, Sony needs it desperately.

Sure the PS4 is a little faster then Xbox one however the features on Xbox one are far greater then PS4. Thats why i got the Xbox, with streaming to PC soon and directx 12 this will be a fantastic for me :).

It is good that sony was able to pull it off this time, I think they have lost a enough money over the years.

Um every new generation of consoles becomes the best selling in history unless its a total shit bomb like the Wii U. Why? Because the world is developing and every year millions more potential customers get the electricity and money to join in the gaming market. If your console isn't the best selling in history every generation your leadership needs to be fired.

Except no one beat the PS2 last gen. The PS4 might have a shot, but I doubt it.

I still have this feeling the whole XB1+Win10 thing will go south like 360+Vista+GFWL.
This will be a bigger push for the whole XB1+Win10+WinPhone/Tablet. 360+GFWL was such a non-execution by microsoft outside of sorta linked accounts and was purely about the games. The new push is for more unified platform for all things not just games, who knows if it will work. As a person who doesn't own a smartphone outside of a work phone i'm not the typical owner.

It's a bit surprising to me. There have been more exclusive games on Xbox One hat I've wanted to play. Also I really feel like Microsoft is actively improving the software experience compared to what I see on the PS4.

As an owner of both consoles, I prefer the Xbx One and find myself using it more frequently.

I won't consider buying either until the 'slim' version is released.

That reminds me, my useless Microsoft Points are expiring. Can't use them anywhere. Oh well.

People buy a console to play video games, not watch movies.

I don't buy consoles, but if I was, I'd get a PS4. Simply because it's better looking than the xbone. That thing is ugly as fork.

Ps4 is basically the same size as the ps3 slim. So realistically probably not going to get much smaller. Plus the slim versions have historically been far cheaper in their construction quality. I really don't see any benefit to waiting on that version as far as the ps4 goes.

Its already out; smaller, quieter, and higher framerates than the other Windows 8.1 console (aka the XBone) and allows for mods and totally unlocked functionality:

Console exclusives pretty much the only reason why I still buy consoles.

Never buy a console till at least 2-3 years after launch. By that time price has dropped and there are more than 5 games to play on it and the bugs have been fixed and the big games are half price or lower.

I would hope that Microsoft would say NO MORE XBOX exclusives, and if anything just make them Microsoft exclusives for both Windows and console... that would be the day.

But at least pretty much all the big games eventually are on all platforms, and PC has quite a few exclusives of its own: http://www.gamespot.com/forums/pc-m...pc-exclusives-of-2015-2016-2017-new-31154099/

That and there's of course the peripheral advantage, as 21:9 gaming is really taking hold (I'm a convert too, picked up a LG 34" and love it), and of course VR display tech like the Oculus and competitors... hopefully I don't get motion sickness from it, as I think it would be balls to the wall awesome in Elite Dangerous.

Which is why exclusives need to die.
Porting games over to PC half assed has always been an option for companies since the last generation without much optimization it can be done pretty cheaply. Companies have judged it is not worth it or they delay the PC release to be 3+ months after the console release essentially after peak selling time. Companies still don't think PC = profits quite the same as just focusing all resources to console+DLC.

Fixed that for you. :D I will get my enjoyment out of my Xbox One and 360 well you wait. See, we both win.

I love my Xbox One. I still plan on getting a PS4 when there are some exclusives that I want to play. LoU Remastered is close to doing it, but I have it for PS3 and am fine. Waiting for some kick ass games.

I did pick up an Odyssey 2 today, though, with a few games. :D

It's surprising it's already sold 22 million in two years, but I think it's a bit early to say it's going to sell over 155 million units in it's lifetime.

Not really, most big companies are porting games to PC also nowadays. The real problem is when Microsoft or Sony actively pay developers NOT to release the game on PC. No matter how you slice it, forced exclusives like that are anti-consumer nowadays. All the major platforms are x86, it's simply a carrot being dangled to try and get people to buy an additional system they don't need.

The Xbox was never "top dog", aside from the first few years of that generation. The PS2 out sold the Xbox many times over and the PS3 has sold more than the 360 has. Seems like the PS4 will continue this trend.

the funny thing is when a game is a PC exclusive no one ever says that. Only console companies make a big ass deal out of exclusives but the fact is that there are more PC exclusives than any other platform and AFAIK that includes many of the biggest games on earth like almost all the good MOBAs, RTS etc.... So why don't people talk about this? Because the irony of it all is that everyone has to have a computer, so very few people think I am going to buy a computer just for this one game. No they think I need a computer anyway I will upgrade my price a little so I can play games.

The main difference is no one fucking pays someone to make a game a PC exclusive. People just do it because its the best most accessible platform for making a game especially if you aren't an established studio.

IMO MS needs to either dump xbox or they need to make STRICT unbreakable internal policy on the removal of all Xbox based conflict of interest. What ducman said would be one step in that direction. You hire a studio to make an xbox exclusive it is also released on PC same day. Simple rules like that would make sure MS stays the dominant PC platform for gaming. With the console they just need to do what consoles do, sell at a bigger loss to trap more buyers into the platform. Stop trying to turn a console into a day 1 money maker it doesn't make sense.

And because some games just play really poorly with a console controller. Can you imagine playing starcraft with the thumbsticks? ARGH!!! :D
