ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 Motherboard $79

Really tempting. Snag the 4790k from MC for $280...Hmmmm. How much of an improvement would I see over my sig rig. GTX 980 will be here tomorrow. Planning on going 4k soon.

refurb + tiger direct = staying far away as I can.

Really? I've never dealt with them before. Did you have a bad experience with them or are their refurbs consistently bad?
I did read the fine print that says they have a third party doing refurbs and not the manufacturer.

I've had great luck with many refurbished products, hell most of the things I buy are refurbished to save a buck. But does anybody have experience with refurbished motherboards? Seems like a risky thing to jump on, especially when they say it's refurbished by third party "professional" technicians.

Really would like to snag this sabertooth, such an amazing price.

For the refurbs, heard some stories about the pins being bent.

As for tiger direct, had a really bad dealing with them, asked for a refund, which they did, but shorted me by about $90. Luckily, I bought the bundle at amazon (tiger direct was the third party seller) and amazon issued me the rest of the refund.

I've got a 4790k, would a z87 board work with it? My gigabyte matx 5 isn't cutting it.

Looking at the asus site it says it does.. no bios upgrade needed. I'm not bothered with refurbs.. if it doesn't work I can always send it back. I've had asus refurbs before, no problems.

If I'd already been wanting to replace my board (I haven't even reactivated windows yet, been waiting to get the board sorted first), any reason why I should avoid this?

The non-refurb board gets 5 stars.

In for 1.

Any Z87 board would need a BIOS update for Devil's Canyon. Had a Z87 mobo returned to me (not on this site) because someone didn't do their homework. Grr.

So tempting, but I'd rather not deal with refurbished. Unless I was buying from amazon :)

Dang this is reminiscent of the geek.com asus refurb deals from back in the day... anyone know a quad core 1150 deal for less than $130 for a plex server?

Might snag a used 4430 or something for around there if you're lucky. More likely looking in the $150+ range though.

Follow up!!

So, I got my MB from TD yesterday and just completed my build. First impressions were it looked brand new. None of the accessories were open except the i/o panel. Dropped in my 4970k that I got from a member here and NO POST!! Red CPU light and nothing else. To the untrained eye, seems like a DOA MB or CPU..Thankfully, I did my homework and had DLed the latest BIOS to thumbdrive lastnight for Devils Canyon support.. Popped it in the USB BIOS slot, hit the button and watched the magic happen. I am typing this from said system. Im sure whoever sent it back had the same issue just not the solution. $200+ motherboard for $90 to my door!! Not bad at all. Probably the only issue with the refurbs they just sold.. Good luck to all that got in on it!

How'd you update the bios without an 'old' haswell chip installed to get it to post?

The new Asus boards don't require post to update the bios. They have a flashback button on the back to update the bios without powering it up. Cool feature.

Yep USB flashback. Super handy feature, really separates Asus from the pack (not sure if others support it, but it irked me when I found my Gigabyte doesn't support anything similar).

Handy in the event of a bad flash ie power out during updating.
