We all know that Microsoft is bringing back the start menu. That isn't really news. Finding out "when" they are releasing the update would be news damn it! :D

With another update to Windows 8.1, Microsoft will be bringing back a Start Menu and windowed Metro-Style/Modern apps, Microsoft officials confirmed during the company's Build 2014 show. Terry Myerson, the Executive Vice President of the operating system group, told attendees of the Build keynote on April 2 that Microsoft will be making these tweaks to Windows in an update to Windows 8.1 that will be available at some point in the future.

Dam people wont have shit to whinge about now.... lol

If its what people want then its the right move.

great news! They finally get it

Now all they need to do is ditch the crappy ribbon and I'll be a happy camper

It will only be available on Windows 9 Professional.

Windowed "apps" sounds like a better idea to me...

Coming as well. Windowed Metro apps for desktop (you can change the behavior to the old style, too). I like how they are doing this. Giving the OPTION to the user, not forced. Don't like it? Change it. Do like it? Leave it. It's nice that way.

I personally will be upgrading from 7 to 8.1 once this is implemented. Wish they did this over a year ago... Better late than never I suppose.

Good, all many of us complainers ever really wanted was a choice without resorting to third parties. 8 is pretty solid otherwise.

So will my Grandpa. He was pissed and kept asking when they were going to fix it. He's on 7 now, and keeps looking at new PC's, but swears he won't upgrade until they get rid of the Start Screen...

Better late than never for sure, but it's still best to get it right from the start. How they thought they could cram shit down people's throats and not get huge backlash is a mystery...

talk about being stubborn...MS really didn't want to cave in and give the people what they were asking for even if it meant hindering sales of its flagship OS...until now...too little too late?

I'm not sure how any of that crap got through user testing in the first place. Nice to know they are going to finally address some of the bigger annoyances, but kind of late to make that realization.

Finally a worthy successor to Windows 7. Windows bringing back the Windows, priceless. I will consider upgrading my personal machine once this takes place.

Great, it only took almost two fucking years to do this

And with that said, why should I buy windows 8 when Windows 9 is probably right around the corner?

You give people around here to much credit. Almost every post here so far is whining. Heatlesssun has been saying this is coming all along, no surprise here.

Huh, Stardock just released a product that enables windowed metro apps to...and I guess thier Start8 product will be going away soon enough too

The start screen in 8.1 isn't bad now that you can change the background. But if this will silence all the complainers, that is what needs to be done.

They may have been slow about it but Microsoft has had its plate full with Windows 8, this is only one part of a lot development that's gone into it. And there are about 160 million or so Windows 8.x users that get this for free. Windows 9 is about 12 to 18 months off so for the relatively small number of users that buy Windows upgrades as opposed to getting with their devices, maybe they should wait.

Heatlesssun has defended Windows 8 till he was blue in the face, defending the start screen etc with "Oh just install Start8 etc if you want it back" and so on and so forth.

That's the thing, that's the FUNDAMENTAL FLAW of Windows 8, NOBODY likes the start menu, its a giant gaudy piece of shit that's only there so microsoft can try to sell you shit, even fucking apple and android products don't do this shit to you, they just give you an easily accessible store if you want something, you don't turn those devices on and a giant screen pops up saying "YA WANNA BUY SOME SHIT?!"

And then, when 99.999999999999999999% of their consumers say they want the start menu back, what do they do? They plug their fucking ears and go "LALALALALA I'M NOT LISTENING I THINK YOU'LL ALL JUST BUY IT ANYWAYS AND WE'LL MAKE MONEY ON THE APPS STORE CAUSE WE SHOVE IT IN YOUR FACE LALALALA!"

Except nobody bought it, people actually avoided it SO MUCH it even killed PC sales! People are that god damn mad at the OS they were sticking with their old PC's rather than upgrading.

And even through all of this, ALL OF THIS, they refuse to lower the price on the OS, I just checked my local shops in the area and its still THE SAME PRICE as Windows 7, its performing so god damn bad they have to sell it at the same price as an OS that came out nearly five years ago now. I may not be an ultra business man, but I can guarantee you that you don't charge the same amount for a product NOBODY wants the same amount for a product EVERYONE wants.

It gets better! Instead of fixing Windows 8 and adding the start menu, they instead tell everyone that Windows 7 is getting end of life treatment by 2015! TWENTY FIFTEEN, Windows XP didn't get end of life till FOURTEEN YEARS after its release, and windows 7 is getting shit on for mainstream support in five years. Why? To push Windows 8.

This whole fiasco has been fucking stupid since day one, only until after Balmer bled out literally BILLIONS of dollars from the company did the stock holders finally go "Ok, seriously, fucking stop it, stop it now, you're making us lose money" and Balmer STILL fucking backed his "battle strategy" in thinking Windows 8 would "Be a winner", and had to get REMOVED from the company in order to set them slowly back on track.

Yes, I blame all this shit, ALL this shit on Balmer, as does everyone the fuck else in the industry on the mess of Windows 8. He thought he could shove it down everyone's throats and they would sit there and take it, and when for once the ENTIRE buying population refused, he doubled-down on his strategy instead of abandoning it and giving the people WHAT THEY WANTED! The only reason Balmer got outed from the company is he -LITERALLY- had nobody under him left to fire! He blamed everyone BUT himself in Windows 8's woes, fired everyone under him from every windows division, and only after running out of sacrificial lambs did the stock holders FINALLY turn on him.

This is the history of Windows 8, and OS so bad it crippled the PC industry for two years. Enjoy.

Windowed "apps" sounds like a better idea to me...

I think I know why they weren't there at release, but it still sucked when we went from the early builds where apps only ran in single-sized windows to only running fullscreen. The team said "yeah, we're shipping like that" and a lot of us had a huge "bwuh?" reaction. It makes some sense from an iterative development perspective (fixed sizes -> adjustable in one direction sizes -> universally adjustable sizes), yet it still wasn't a decision I liked. I'm glad that it's finally coming.

has the 2015 date been confirmed?...this is the first I'm hearing of this...seems way too soon

Its what all those chinese windows insiders have been saying, the same guys that leak every damn single piece of windows code for like 20 years now

win7 is the last windows im gonna use, ... at least on a pc that's connected to the internet, don't even care if they bring back the start menu, there are already something like a dozen apps that do this, ms is simply untrustworthy

Heatlesssun has defended Windows 8 till he was blue in the face, defending the start screen etc with "Oh just install Start8 etc if you want it back" and so on and so forth.

I've never said Windows 8 didn't have issues and I've from day one said that it needed something like a non-full screen Start Screen with features that at least mimic the Start Menu. But there's been plenty of criticisms of 8 that where just flat out technically incorrect and simply overhyping issues that just aren't as bad as portrayed. I've always said that it takes some adjustment to get used to the changes but if one could get past though changes and actually knew what was there and how it worked, it just wasn't that big of deal to use it as a desktop OS with a keyboard and mouse.

The Start Screen is a better short cut system than the Start Menu and does notifications. Sell Stuff on the Start Screen? This is the kind of nonsensical negative hype that I'm referring to.

And why is it not listening? Maybe it just took that long to get there. It took Microsoft almost 3 years to clean up XP's security. I find it interesting that I get called this Windows defender but seem to be much more clear about past Windows history of mistakes and time to fix than many Windows 8 bashers.

Except nobody bought it, people actually avoided it SO MUCH it even killed PC sales! People are that god damn mad at the OS they were sticking with their old PC's rather than upgrading.

Nobody bought it, so nobody is greater than all OS X, Linux and Chromebook users combined. Again, why is it necessary to overhype something to the point it makes no sense?

And even through all of this, ALL OF THIS, they refuse to lower the price on the OS, I just checked my local shops in the area and its still THE SAME PRICE as Windows 7, its performing so god damn bad they have to sell it at the same price as an OS that came out nearly five years ago now. Except Microsoft just announced Windows 8 for free for small and mid-sized tablets along with Windows Phone.

It gets better! Instead of fixing Windows 8 and adding the start menu, they instead tell everyone that Windows 7 is getting end of life treatment by 2015! TWENTY FIFTEEN,

And by 2015 Windows should be the flagship OS, two versions behind 7, and it's end of mainstream support, not EOL like what's happening to XP next week, that's not until 2020 for 7.

Except Microsoft made like 26 billion last year and it's stock is now as levels not seen since the dot com bubble burst.

This is the history of Windows 8, and OS so bad it crippled the PC industry for two years. Enjoy.

Crippled the PC industry? LOL! There are these things called smart phones and tablets and a mature PC market that had far more to do with the decline of new PCs than any one version of Windows.

I wonder if MS had any extra money to be made through all those 3rd party apps made to bring the start menu back. Maybe this was all planed.

And the gap between Vista being released -> XP hitting End of Mainstream -> EOL is the same as the gap between 8 being released -> 7 hitting end of mainstream -> EOL. Lost a huge post about that to the forum aether 0.o

I know a lot of the 3rd party guys were going on and on about how big they were, but I bet fewer than 10% of all Windows 8 users ever paid any more for these tools. I did spend $5 on Modern Mix when it came out, but I don't even use it now.

It's just too easy to accuse people of whining as if the vast majority is somehow wrong.

They aren't. Windows 8 sucked ... period, end of story.

You have to look at the bigger picture if you really want to understand what's going on. Windows phone, sucks, Windows 8, sucks, Bing, sucks, Xbox One, sucks, older leadership, sucks, etc etc etc.

Sorry, you don't get to cherry pick facts. which there are plenty of when it comes to Microsoft. And you would have us believe, it doesn't and that millions of people are somehow ... whining? lol .. I'm pretty sure we all know what we like and don't like.

Of course they are going to give back Windows back to it's customers. Finally we don't have to stare at some half retarded hybrid broke tablet OS being force fed to us.

Other than the new start screen, what sucks about Windows 8?

It's whining when one says something sucks without making a cogent argument with specifics. And that's been a lot of the 8 complainers. Not everyone, but a lot.

I'm really excited to hear the news. Windows 8 was only mediocre in my opinion and it was really seriously hurting the PC industry to the point where OEMs were back to offering Windows 7 on some of their computers. I'm glad to see that they're going to let you run applications in a window again too. The funny thing is how limited the must be full screen thing made Windows 8 feel and I'm not at all a power user. So yeah, it's good to see Microsoft backpedaling based on the really lame sales and the large number of installed instances of programs to restore the start button and better/smarter UI. If they do it right, I might back off of using Linux.

On a side note, this...

There's nothing accurate about it and Heatless already took it apart, paragraph-by-paragraph.

Nevermind the ignorant BS in your first paragraph. Downgrade rights is not new to Windows 8. It's been around for some time.

If you don't like Windows 8, go you, but if you're going to bad-mouth it, at least have your shit together.
