The co-founder of CD Projekt RED has posted an open letter to the community announcing there will be no DRM in The Witcher 3, period.

I’d like to say it loud and clear: The PC version of The Witcher 3 will have absolutely no DRM from day 0. Zero. Zip. Nada. It doesn’t matter if you choose to buy it on GOG.com and support us directly or buy the game in box format, you’ll still get the 100% DRM-free experience. And this goes for the whole world.

Very nice. Hopefully they don't go full retard again with the piracy letters/threats.

I always support CD Projekt even if I'm not crazy about the game. They are really awesome dudes :)

awesome that they are doing this! does this mean it wont be on steam since steam is DRM? i dont see the problem with releasing it on steam as long as they have those non-DRM options for whoever doesnt like steam, but i think they will lose a lot of sales not putting it on steam. id rather have it with all my other games, and auto-patches, etc.

The quote basically says, if you buy it from GOG, or the box.

the quote doesnt say anything about steam, but the article has an edit that says yes, it will be available on steam. i havent played either of the witcher games, but i'm very tempted to buy this at full price. would make it the first game in 4 or 5 years if i do. probably will wait til its at like $20 though, which is still 4x what i typically pay. :) i really hope this game sells a billion copies and helps change the industry for the better. if even one more studio follows suit, it will be a huge victory for gamers.

It probably makes sense that people who buy your game shouldn't have a worse experience than those who steal it, too bad Ubisoft never understood that. CD Projekt continue to be good guys and I'll support them, though not for the DRM, TW2 was an excellent RPG.

If you bought TW1 or 2 on Steam you can go to GOG and get the DRM free version now as well.

Essentially I have 2 copies of the game.

Steam DRM is optional, if you download the steanworks sdk you will see that you have the choice to use steam drm or not.

never played the witcher franchise, but I'm going to buy this just to vote for sanity and reason

Technically DD sites like Steam and Origin are "DRM" free yet are still DRM in them self.

Does anyone know if the "DRM free" boxed version forces you to register on Steam?

What I was trying to say is that, when they specify certain things, it usually means the rest of it will probably be the opposite. And like you said, it would be foolish to no sell it on Steam, which is pretty much THE distributor for PC, so the unlikelihood of it is... well... unlikely.

That was my reasoning of it anyway.

If it forced you to sign up on Steam that would be Steam/Steamworks and that's DRM, so no.

CDP really is the best thing in PC gaming. I don't think I've ever wanted a game as badly as I want TW3.

This I bought Witcher 2 full price but never played it just to support them.

you should play it its an amazing game

but yea this will be a pre-order for me as even if they some whole screw it up itll get fixed

Steam version could still be drm free. There are many games you can still run after uninstalling steam and just running them directly from the executable. Basically you could just use steam once to download the game once then never use it again or remove it.

Good to know. Buying a boxed copy is more meaningful if it's DRM free

This is why I like CD Projeckt. 1 day drm for Witcher 2 and now no drm for Witcher 3. Even though I played through the story and never played it again. Witcher 2 was a good game but the ending was weak.

I like the part where you want the game to sell well, but you yourself are too cheap to pay more than $5 for anything.

i picked up 1 and 2 for 20 bucks a wile ago on GoG
but i would say if i had the money when it came out it was worth full price
i will be pre-ordering 3
even better they know the PC fans expect the game to push top end systems so should be a great game

Exactly, I think they might be the only developer now to do AAA production value games for the PC that pushes the boundries and most importantly they get that stupid DRM is not the answer. Thats why I support them and I will buy their games at $60 no problem even if I never get around to playing it or play it for a short while. I am glad they are really listening to their fans and those who buy their games and respecting us enough to not put DRM.

I will be buying this game solely because of this. I may not even play it, but more developers need to stop drinking the piracy kool-aid and ruining their games with always on, online requirements.

We can thank Valve for starting this.

Steam doesn't require you to be online all the time. It is however digital distribution, so um, of course you have to go online periodically, to get your games and patches.

It if wasn't Valve, someone else would have eventually done the same, with everything moving online these days, not just video games.

We can complain against it all we want, but the fact that the majority of gamer continue spending on video games that requires them to connect to an online service, one way or another, shows that the market doesn't have an issue with it. Can't entirely blame the companies for doing what they do when they are getting the "wallet approval" by the gamer.

I have not played through the Witcher games I have, but just doing this guarantees I DON'T wait for a Steam sale to get this game...The day it's out, is the day I get it...if theirs a special edition that's $80, I'm buying it day one. We have to support good business practices such as this.

i could of pirated the games long be for as well but i didnt again because they get loading there software down with DRM wont stop it any way

oh and they have that Cyberpunk game coming at some point too
so 2 great games in the pipe from CDPR

Way to go! Not that DRM was a problem with Witcher, but it's a step in the right direction. I hope everyone who loves the other two games will show their support. I'm a big fan or the Witcher games, especially the first one. Quite possibly the best solo RPG in a while (in terms of characters and depth in particular).

In the broadest sense of what DRM is, the box copy and GoG are DRM too. A truly DRM free game would be one which is available for free download everywhere: torrents, kiosks, etc, but if you wanted to legally be able to play it you would have to buy a license.

Hopefully it'll be on Steam, just for the convenience of me not having to create another account with yet another online retailer.

There's an update at the bottom of the page that says:

"It’ll be on Steam; the team isn’t going to exclude that community by any means. Gamers have a choice in where they buy their games, but where CDPR does have control — like GOG.com — there will be absolutely no DRM."
