Twitter Is Hiding Two Years Of Financial Data

Given the massive amounts of money this company lost in the years it DID report, you can only imagine why they decided not to report the financial data for 2008 and 2009.

In filing paperwork for an initial public offering, Twitter offered a glimpse at its financials going back to 2010, when the startup was just starting to earn real money. But for two prior years, Twitter exercised its right to remain silent. The lack of disclosure is perfectly legal, thanks to a new law that eases regulations on certain companies going public. Nevertheless, it raises an obvious question: What happened to Twitter in 2008 and 2009?

They can't just be hiding losses - nobody would care that a young company had losses, perhaps even massive ones, before starting to turn a profit. Given that, it's hard not to imagine that they're hiding some sort of malfeasance.

Its not just about the losses for those years.
They are about to float on the stock exchange and are trying to hide that they have never turned a profit.

Anybody know what Twitter spends all their money on? 'Cus I'm not seeing it.

It's amazing that so much money goes into a company that looks like it could have been coded by a few people in a kitchen. I understand it takes a lot of people hours to run servers and support and all that, but come on...

It doesn't matter because their balance sheets would obviously tell people everything they need to know about the early years. If they lost money they will have debt, that will reveal that. If they had enough venture capital and other investments to cover it, well then it doesn't matter.

How does Twitter even make money? I've never seen an advert in a tweet or anything at all.

Through the official app they show sponsored or promoted tweets from time to time... but frankly, I never click those. Not sure if these show up on third party Twitter apps which many use as well.

Ads were clogging it from democrats during the 2012 elections... every single time I looked for anything on Twitter, I'd see "OBAMA WANTS YOU TO VOTE HOPE AND CHANGE" or "REPUBLICANS ARE EVIL AND DEMONSPAWNS, FIND OUT WHY BY CLICKING HERE" :p . It was pathetic. (And yes that was on their desktop site).

One way young companies fail is they under estimate the cost of infrastructure. They have to pay some to host all their stuff plus pay for bandwidth, support, upkeep, etc. Yes it seems small on the front end and the coding seems basic but you have to prop up your product somehow.

How do you "search" twitter? I mean isnt the whole point that you just add someone you know, and whatever they tweet is what you get? I've been following the same 3 people for the last 3 years. No spam. I guess if you're a social media whore then you might encounter these sort of things.

And we march inexorably closer to the next tech bubble burst.

Yeah, I mean at least the first bubble had merit. People were actually buying into some kind of product/tech/concept, just turns out many were either vaporware or overzealous. This tech bubble is based on pure fantasy. People are buying stock in things just because they attribute some intrinsic value to it, even though said company doesnt actually produce anything at all.

Actually I barely use twitter, and I don't use facebook. You search twitter with hashtags and topics/such to find people relevant to the topic you're looking for info on. In these searches you'll see "sponsored tweets". I don't even follow anyone, so you're more of a heavy user than me on that even :p.
