ASUS PB278Q 1440p IPS (PLS Panel)

A couple of other observations between the two screens:

Colors do pop more on the 970D due to the glossy glass effect and while its not as bad as an Apple Cinema Display in terms of reflections, using an overhead light or one in front of the screen is very problematic. The ASUS is usable even with a strong overhead light.

The compensator makes the 970D very uniform, but also elevates the black levels which causes dark grey blacks, blacks are definitely better on the 278Q. Still, I would rather take the more uniform screen over the two.

Using my i1DPro, contrast at 6500k, 140 cd/m2 is around 820:1 for the 970 and 890:1 for the 278Q,

The DP connector on the 970 needs a credit card to remove , you'll break something if you use your fingers.

Both are great displays, the biggest flaw of the 278Q is the uneven backlight/color (varies per sample but every one has it to some degree). The 970 would be an almost flawless masterpiece had some idiot at Samsung not decided to ape Apple and put a dirt trapping and reflecting 'clear glass' on it.

However, it seems the new Dell displays: 2713H, 3013H will have the same mild AG as the current 2713HM/278Q (2713HM also has very uneven lighting on a lot of samples) but come with a built in compensator. I'm waiting for the 3013 to come out, that may be the $1000+ display that's actually worth the price. Uniformity compensators in 24"+ screens that cost this much are a necessity, not a luxury.

Do you have settings from your 278Q i'm using NCX atm looks great but would like to try out a brighter settings.

Turn up the brightness, it will make a negligible difference to the colours. If you just turned it down after using high settings it will seem dim at first. Turn the display off and come back to it and it will seem fine.

Hi,

I´am very interested at the Asus PB278Q. My Display is the EIZO FORIS FS2333-BK but i am not happy with this Display. The black has in Games a dark grey Shadow is the Asus better or have the blacks also a dark grey Shadow in Games?

Sorry for my bad english, i hope u understand what i mean.

Anandtech here says that this monitor have a total overall delay of 28.2 ms using the DVI input.
You think that this will be noticeable when monitor is used for games?

Input%20Lag_575px.png

Full review here

I do not understand why they considered 11.5ms as pixel response time.

No it has 17ms of input lag. If you did not consider input lag when buying your current display you need not worry about it.

Pixel response=how fast the pixels change, the longer the pixel response times the more a display will ghost.

how good does the scaler perform at lower resolution than native one? i mean, playing a 1080p movie or gaming at 1920x1080...

Was on offer at Dustin Home (Sweden) (4499:- instead of 4999:- (up to 5300:- at other places)), so just ordered one. Hope it is as good as the NEC I already have, just larger :)

Always have 14 days distant selling regulations if not :)

Does Asus honor warranties on monitors bought "used" from Amazon (actually Amazon, not a third party)? Amazon says manufacturers typically do not honor their standard warranties on used merchandise, but I don't see how it is any different from buying open box buys at a retail store. Any thoughts?

You don't have to register the S/N online upon purchase, so chances that they know your screen is "used" is very slim. I would probably take the chance, as realistically it should have X years from Date of Manufacture, at worst, and from Date of Purchase at best.

+1

I was considering getting 3 of the PB278Q and some games may need to be at 5760x1080 vs the native 7680x1440. CPU and GPU horsepower may take another generation to smoothly run the higher resolution in some games.

I need to replace my monitor. The single Dell u2711 that I have has a hard 1.5" scratch right in the middle of the screen and the left half of the screen occasionally goes bad. The screen issue is sometimes fixed with a Fonzie smack. And yes, I say "Aaayy" after it works again. The 1080p scaling on the u2711, is ok at best, but I could probably justify it if I were to have triple screens. I don't ever use the u2711 in 1080p because my system easily powers the 1440p resolution and it looks so much better.

So, is there much input delay at 1080p? Does the image look grainy compared to native 1080p monitors?

Anyone else game with the PB278Q and how does it compare to the u2711 regarding input delay and response?

Probably right, but I wonder why Amazon says differently?

Just got this baby today... I like it! Very minimalistic anti-glare, not nearly as pronounced as my old Dell 22" IPS. If there's any backlight bleeding it's small enough that I don't notice it. Have played Assassin's Creed 3 and TF2 on it so far, and they both look fantastic with no ghosting or lag detected.

Can you switch the resolution to 1920x1080 and tell me if it introduces addition lag, or poor image quality compared to native 1080p monitors. I would really like to know if non-native 1080p gaming looks reasonable. Please throw me a bone and give any anecdotal or subjective testing on this setting. My old Dell u2711 made scaling a washed out mess and some games may require a reduction in triple screen on the PB278Q.

Thanks for any input.

I tried it on 1920x1080 fullscreen in Assassin's Creed 3 and TF2 and didn't notice any issues lagwise. There was a little bit of blur in scaling but it really wasn't bad at all, at least not for me, but I'm not super picky. I can see myself playing a game in 1920x1080 if my comp couldn't handle 2560x1440.

Just a quick question, is the bottom bezel thicker than the top or sides? Hard to tell from the pictures. Hoping that the bezels are all the same size.

The bottom bezel is slightly wider than the top or sides, yes...

Anyone use the quickfit feature? Is it actually useful or just gimmicky? In theory sounds pretty cool. Also any idea on the PWM cycle rate?

Thanks for the feedback. I have to play at 1080p on my dell u2711 because the displayport is acting up. It isn't horrible, and I am getting used to it. I miss 1440p. Sounds like I should purchase 3 of the PB278Q.

Since i do NOT do any gaming on my current rig and use it primarily for Photo editing along with normal internet usage will a single Nvidia GTX 560ti 1GB card run this Asus monitor at the 2560 x 1440 resolution without any visual problems?

Thanks or any replys, ;)

Well i just picked one up today from the local comp store and well......close to the top right there looks to me like tiny water marks. There are 3 of them and can only really see them when using a dark grey background. Ill try and take a picture of it. The marks are maybe 5mm wide and 7mm long.

They will be receiving a new shipment within a few weeks and i can exchange it then. Sigh....Otherwise the monitor is perfect. No light bleed, nothing!

Received mine about a week ago from Amazon and I'm generally pleased with it.

Quite refreshing to see a balance between the two extremes regarding AG and glossy. This coating reduces glare considerably but not at the detriment of overall display clarity.

On my second one back light bleed on both. The first one was really bad the second is only noticable on black screen or black bars in a movie, have tried to live with it but don't think I should have to settle on some thing I don't feel should be there. This is a real pain in the butt. If I receive another on that's not up to expectations I don't know what else to buy. Any one have any ideas if there is a better choice

Just tried to replace my monitor with amazon and they have pulled the item because of the high return with back light bleed. On the phone now with cus serv. Will probably end up with a dell 2713hm. This is a real pain in the ass. Don't know if I should just live with it or not. Interested in hearing what others mite do in this situation.

TIA: Menace

Just got my return today and there is a tiny tiny amount of light bleed (all lights off and screen set to blank) Do you have pics of the bleeding? I think its almost impossible to get a perfect screen

No sorry packed up and shipped back,so I guess it's on to the next:(;)

How's the warranty on this one? Is it as good as Dell's? I've heard Dell ships you a new one before taking away the broken.

Price on amazon is currently $648. Decided to finally bite. Should arrive Tuesday, we shall see how it goes.

Picked up a pair of these at my local bestbuy for 649.99 cdn.

So far so good, backlight bleed is minimal. Just took a bit of time to get the colors calibrated how I like. I don't really game that much but the few games i've tried haven't noticed any ghosting.

Will the Asus do 75hz at 2560x1440? If so how do you go about setting that up in the Nvidia Control Panel?

Just got this monitor yesterday and so far it has been very disappointing. So far i have found the following defects:

1 stuck pixel - Appears blue on black or dark background.
1 stuck pixel - Appears black only on blue background
Both of these are highly visible at brightness levels of 30%

It also appears to have 4 very small whitish dots most visible when the brightness is at 100% when viewed in a darkish room. These dots are very small and in the most part are unnoticable unless you look for them, nevertheless they are there. I don't really know what these are (they look smaller than the stuck pixels)

1 darkish pixel that is not fully black on a white screen and is visible with other colours aswell such as red or green. Don't know what this is either, as is not a stuck pixel since it changes colour and is not a dead pixel either, but it definitely is consistently darker than the pixels around it.

Also consistent with what other uses have said backlight bleed is very visible in a darker room , especially on the top edge of the screen slightly to the left.

I dont personally notice the PWM but i have noticed it on any other monitors so i dont really know what im looking for.

Needless to say i have rma'd it straight away. Am i being to fussy expecting the screen to be 100% flawless considering i paid £485 for it?

What was the build date? My screen is almost perfect minus a slight blemish near the center (like a smudge underneath the panel).

I asked my self the same question, was i just being picky. I think it is reasonable to expect a defect free monitor. If they advertised that the monitor was less then perfect and that it might have issues would you buy it and would you pay $650US ? I don't think I would especially since there are other choices.

Did you own one? i see from your sig that you've got the dell U2713HM how is that in comparison?

What specifically what were your issues with the monitor?

@menace

How did the RMA turn out?

I finally RMA'd mine yesterday. Amazon shipped overnight and replacement arrived today. So far I detect no problems. Will check for blacklight bleed tonight when my room is dark. At any rate, if the imperfections are a distraction, then it is not too picky to expect better. If it had not been for the smudge underneath the panel near the center, I would have I kept it. The spot at the bottom right wasn't a problem. The replacement has a Nov. 2012 build date (I think the other one was Oct). I am also using TFT Central's icc profile and settings.
