According to this report, Valve is working on a new game engine. Please feel free to make jokes about HL2:EP3 being released on the new engine.

Gabe Newell: We’ve been working on Valve’s new engine stuff for a while, we’re probably just [incomprehensible, subtitled as: "waiting for a game to roll it out with"]

Fan: Is it going to be more than just an extension to Source? Is it an entirely new engine?

Gabe Newell: Yeah!

Jokes about HL2:EP3 aside, I love Valve and can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

Valve has done surprisingly well with Source overall, it's old, looks pretty good and scales well on a huge range of hardware.

I'm hoping for a DX11 code-path; my Radeon 6970 takes a ~25-30% performance hit in DX9 vs DX11 at equal settings (res, AA, AF).

OpenGL.

Drivers, man, drivers. D3D means shit, really.

You do realize there is a significant different in just stock performance a card is capable of to render the same exact scene in dx11 vs dx9, without anything extra added dx11 is far more efficient.

I wonder if Valve's push into Linux (and Mac) means it might be OpenGL only so it would be easier to port to all OS.

I don't know, aren't you oversimplifying things, and which game you talking about?

So does this mean I have to hit a person that's 6 hit boxes behind them instead of 2?
I'm excited.

Really? I'd say DX11 is a ridiculous resource hog that needs to be toned down in DX11.1. I've seen better looking games in DX9 while maintaining a smooth gameplay performance throughout. Look at Dear Esther: it looks really beautiful, but its not a resource big even at full settings.

Oh, I think I might add this here, artstyle =/= graphics. You can have a game look beautiful without bloating it up with heavy graphical load. I just wish devs would be more efficient in their implementation of eye candies.

Without going into all the little detail changes that started in dx10 and 10.1 just look at WoW and their implementation of a DX11 codepath, it adds no visual improvements it just switches over to an optimized dx11 codepath and you get about 30% more performance for the same exact looking game.

Here's to hoping that we'll be able to run it in linux! (Always wanted to run a AAA game in my "other" OS)

Uh.... You are making absolutely no sense on your comments about DX11...

DX11 "FEATURES" is a entirely different thing than what he is talking about.

And no, it's not a resource hug, it just developers overused on certain feature that is part of DX11, such as useless tessellation in Crysis 2.

Crysis 2 tessellation wasn't useless! I needed 100,000 polygon concrete barriers!

Hmm... that would not make people playing on Intel GPUs happy, I imagine a fair few are relying on Sand/Ivy Bridge CPUs only to play Counter Strike,

Intel's GL driver is stuck on v3, which is equivalent to D3D v10. (Despite the hardware supporting D3D 11)

AMD and NVIDIA have had v4 for 1.5 years now, which is equiv to D3D v11 with tessellation goodness.

Besides modern GL 3/4 and D3D 10/11 are so similar it is rather trivial to have a shared codebase for the two APIs. (Unlike GL 2 and D3D 9)

I would not be surprised if NVIDIA 'optimised' the game to use stupid levels of tesselation just to make it run slow on AMD.

I'm reading all these posts and just have to laugh. Valve is a company that has shown they are shifting into a company motivated by cashing in on the latest trends. Engine is probably touch based or designed for the next wave of consoles in which the PC gamer will got shoddy ports.

Go ahead and criticize me now, I know that there is a good chunk of users that idolize this company for some sick reason. But heed my warning, I will laugh at your tears when you feel betrayed by that fat idiot...

Counter Strike: Global Offensive would have been perfect..................

Better get started on the next Counter Strike cause CSGO is headed for doom.

Steam Linux, although just beginning, make me doubt your doubt for now.

They're probably waiting for this console generation to die before rolling it out. I would take a guess we start seeing new things after the next gens go public.

Probably because theres not much happening, next to no characters (aka the things that take up lots and lots of polygons/shaders/textures to do realistically) and it doesn't use a great deal of stuff like dynamic lights etc.

Agreed! Just download the FREE Black Mesa remade, and that was open source!

I can't wait for it! Love Valve!

mmmister ffreeman. we have been... waiting for you.

Waiting for far too long. They seem so intent on selling everyone else's games that they've delayed HL 3 to the point that it's become the new DNF.New engine or no,just finish the damn game!

at least you see the tesselation in crysis2 not like MaxPayne 3 et Metro that you need to be 1cm from the characters to see it...

HL3 will probably be the release title for the new engine, the same way they did with Source and HL2.

I do agree with this part of your post. I think the Source engine is a great example of this.

How does that make me a sad little person?

Please do not feed the trolls... they will never leave you alone after. =)

Yep. This being known shortly after their announcements about L4D2 running on Linux makes this a fairly obvious assumption. New engine free of all platform specific constraints.

Constraint of licensing fees, it's not all platforms games developed for linux wont run on mac, even though it's opengl and it's sorta similar to linux kernel, each new kernel just makes new quarks. If valve was aiming for hitting as many platforms as possible opengl doesn't really fair any better in terms of cost to port it to another o/s or even console, switching between directX and opengl isn't terrible costly, optimization is costly but just getting it to work right isnt.
