Microsoft Windows 8, not impressed.

I don't agree that there is such a thing as "one size fits all." As everything in the world benefits from variation as a whole. Linear things are generally sub-optimal as far as success is concerned in the real world.

But a Windows PC is the epitome of a one size fits all device. When home computers first became available hobbyists started programming on them and as they became cheaper and more powerful we started to do word processing on them, spreadsheets on them, play games on them, use the Internet on them, playback, record and edit audio and video on them, etc. And all through this evolution we had one generalized OS that could be extended and expanded by adding hardware and software and the same basic UI remained the same. Of course other OSes took a similar track, I was just mentioning Windows here by name.

Adding touch to Windows is no different, its just an evolution in how people interact with computers similar to the mouse. When the mouse came along, it was simply incorporated into our OSes, we didn't have a keyboard only mode for general use. Just another input method along with the keyboard with a new UI and core capabilities remained intact. Window 8 is not perfect in any regards at this point in incorporating touch into itself but concept is tried and true. Add to what is there, making a whole that keeps what's there at least for a while and extend the functionality. In time we will add other methods making a whole with a different UI. This is very soul and essence of a generalized OS, it is by definition one size for all things.

I hate my iPad, the only thing I use it for is occasional RDP, facebook and email. But that's mostly because I did not like having it jailbroken to do things I should be able to do. I think this is where the W8 tablet will shine for me, I'll be able to do more. No longer wanting to smash my tablet in the face of somebody at Apple.

Windows 8 tablet is a very powerful device that is the epitome in hardware terms of a one size fits all solution.

One size fits all = Apple and all competitors go out of business. So it's still just "one size fits most" at best.

Not to mention the power they have over the market in general*

I freaking love windows. I have never had to bash an MS product prior to this release. I always started out fresh using their updated interface (never needed "classic" views) and adapted. There is no windows hating prior to this.

This is just so impossible to love in a desktop setup that I honestly feel slightly sick to my stomach. I usually enjoy exploring the ins and out of a new operating system, and this was a flat out tiresome experience.

Time will tell, but I would put a LARGE bet that windows 8 will be a huge flop, unless they decide to compromise on the METRO lock-down.

it's already a success. it's going to be nothing like vista. it's already a good product, you hate metro fine. but you're way off base saying that others are going to hate it to. it's a better windows 7. and it's only going to get better.

Just a couple hours and I'm really getting attached it. I don't know if I will install it anytime soon on my main desktop, but installed it on my Laptop and I'm finding Metro is actually much easier. It also has a very light and smooth feel, is very fast and seems like an efficient memory manager.

The key for me was discovering the simple quirks, though its a big annoyance to shutdown. Why do they not want you to turn off your PC in 1 click? The key to Windows 8 is the windows key!

lol, the Windows key is useful again. I like 8. "Metro" is nowhere near as blatant as everyone makes it seem. My workspace looks just like it did in Win 7.

No hate here, i'm simply not impressed with the UI, and more important the performance decrease in 98% of games tested there.

You can say all you want about this os not being any faster than the next os, but isn't it simply common sense to expect the newer, more modern os to perform better, use memory in a more efficient manner, have a lighter footprint, better stability etc. etc?

I believe some of you need to elevate your thinking and expectations, cause it appears Microsoft is just fine not moving forward in these crucial areas, and why should they with customers like you?

At first you don't like it then you GROW UP and find its not that bad (it's only an OS and a domestic one at that) and find that with a little tweaking its fine and performs great.

I don't use Metro (I have a browser with tabs) but I have a faster OS, better boot times etc. etc. and I'm happy with that.

Hey as long as people admit they bought a Fixer-upper (because that's what it is) then its all good. And that's exactly what I did. I like it now with my start menu replacement and lots of tweaking, but the Out Of Box Experience was abysmal and it shouldn't have been and god help all the Dumb End Users that aren't savvy enough to do all that.

Grow up?
Do all adults use caps while typing out that statement? Hmm..who knew?
And you now have a faster OS? I'm not sure what benches you're looking at but if you'd like to go back to page 1, you can clearly see atleast in gaming performance it's looking quite dismal.
Or did you just bypass all of that silly fact stuff and simply come here to yell at folks who didn't purchase Win 8?

I'm sure your boot up times are amazing.

Thanks for making my point.

Faster in BF3 and MW3. What is the complaint? From what I remember, Vista and 7 were slightly slower than their predecessors for gaming at release. The fact that it's faster at all is startling.

BF3 is slower, MW3 is faster in 8.

Thanks for making my point.

i been playing with windows 8 rtm for about a week and been playing all my games like BF3 and stuff without any noticable difference. I have also been using the latest win8 drivers for my GTX 680 and i honestly can''t tell a difference between win7 and win8 in terms of performance. I am getting the same FPS probably due to windows 8 being win7 under the hood with some enhancements or updates. The problem with VISTA when it came out was that MS had changed their driver support and it caused alot issues with people's machines because all the manufactures had to update their drivers for it not crash and stuff. By the time windows 7 came out all the drivers had been updated and people's machines ran smoothly again. windows vista was version 6.0 and windows 7 is version 6.1

Whenever there is a big UI change in an OS people like to bitch and complain. I find similar to the Unity complaints with Linux users and also if you go back and read the history on previous windows launches people always complain about the new version of windows. Go read about how people complained about the ui changes in windows 95 with the new start button. Also i don't understand why people are complaining about Metro apps or the windows store? How is this different than what Apple is doing or Google? how is it any different than the google store or the apple store? This is just the way computing is going and if you do not like it then you have a couple choices. you can stay on windows 7 which is perfectly fine or load up a linux distro. Here is a good comparision video of windows tablet vs ipad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHcxMKDKCiU

Thanks for making my point.

Try reading it again kiddo, slowly this time, don't hurt yourself.

But then i'm sure folks who are still running your type of hardware may not have the same standards as those who demand performance.
I have a feeling you also insist there isn't a difference between 30 and 60 fps.

It's all good, people simply have different expectations.

Granted I'm not an "old timer" but I have been around the computer world a while, having owned computers back in the Windows 3.11 era and have been exposed to the numerous GUI changes that have advanced over the time.. Windows 8 really isn't that bad. I've used the Enterprise evaluation for about a month and it really isnt' that difficult to figure out.
The lack of a "Start" menu isn't all that much to worry about and get my panties in a bunch.. I spend 99% of my time on the desktop, so the "Metro" UI doesn't concern me..

Windows 8, to me, seems to have better memory management and faster performance over Windows 7. Those are a few of the immediate things I have noticed in my day to day use of the new operating system.
Only issue I've came across is, Unreal Tournament GOTY will not run.. hopefully its just a driver issue. Waiting for official drivers from Toshiba (non-beta Windows 8 drivers, hopefully).

But I will say this.. with all the complaining about Microsoft's new Windows 8... if Apple wanted to put a dent in the desktop operating system market.. they should release Mac OSX for the x86 desktop NOW! Yeah.. I know you can unofficially get it to work with the hacked, Hackintosh versions.. but Apple should officially release it.

Nope, as the new menu was an improvement.

You seriously don't remember all that hoopla over the classic start menu? Wasn't that basically how Classicshell came about?

I think people will say the same thing about the Start screen a couple years down the road.

I don't recall trying to get my "non existent menu" back.

I'm sure this will blow over as well, when they refine the UI. i.e. give more features/controls over it for power users. As well as people becoming more comfortable with tablets that utilize it. Not to mention when more and more useful "apps" come to it.

It just should not be granted immunity from criticize just because somebody says so. It should earn its place.

I don't think anyone is saying this, I've not. Sure, rational, logical criticism is great. Hyperbolic criticism to the point of inaccurately saying things that are just factually wrong is another thing. Like this notion of some delay in the hot corners responding.

No more flaming or personal attacks or infractions will be given out.
