Comedian Makes $200k Selling Video With No DRM

Early this year, myself ( lending a hand ) along with 4 other guys, 3 of us were shooting, went and shot a Tom Petty concert in Wichita, Kansas. We had with us various equipment but what made the shoot special was we had a rented Red One Epic-M from http://www.alternativerentals.com. We wanted to of course shoot in HD but also wanted material for a future project called, "Tom Petty 4K" the 4k meaning the resolution the Red One Epic-M shoots in.

Taking into account equipment rental, everything, that entire production cost around $110,000. Yeah, I was shocked at the $170,000 for what I am guessing is 4 or 5 hours of video? Not a very complex stage setting either. While not credited directly, I am associated ( friend of friends ) with 11 or 12 productions of various video shoots, from Tom Petty to Too Short / Various Rappers, yes I have Too Shorts Autograph, about the coolest thing I have to, to other less know people / projects. The point I am trying to make is, I know what these things cost.

Look, you're clearly upset and that's fine. You really don't have to remind me or others that our opinions here are our "own" .. we already know that. That's the first thing hurt people do is to go and point out the "singular actions" of someone in an attempt to lesson the impact of their comment. Oh and of course they also attack their educational background. Apparently my comment was pretty damaging to this person and he really pulled out all the stops on me.

Wait, did he just do to me what I basically just did to this comedian? lol?

Sorry my man, this guy is not that funny. Love him to death, put him in your dreams, no one is stopping you from doing that.

Louis CK is definitely not an unknown.

I have enjoyed his stand up in the past, and watched his show a few times.

He is pretty funny, though the self deprecating body image humor becomes a little much on occasion.

in all your little self loving rant you fail to acknowledge the subjective manner of comedy, tragedy, hell, almost all art.

"this guy is not that funny to you" there is no questioning that he is that damned funny to a great many other people. You not agreeing doesn't make him not funny, it makes you have differing tastes than others.

you can let go of your ego a little bit, if ya wanna, or don't.

Louis CK is awesome, I highly suggest watching all of his standup.

Oh he bought a Red camera? Ok, that's like 45k for a base model no extras. We rented one 2 days for 2900 dollars, a chunk of that was insurance in case we lost it, drop it, spilled beer inside.

What goes on behind the scene that a lot of you don't know is that there are a lot of shady producers that prey on anyone they can getting into this business. They would love for nothing more than to line their pockets or the pockets of their friends with exaggerated prices. Ask anyone, people are over-charged all the time for this type of work and when I saw the $170,000, honestly, that was my first thought. If he bought a Red camera, his costs just didn't stop there, he had to spend another 12k - 15k in things he would of had to have for that setup to be functional. Some of it I guess he could have rented but then, he could have rented the Red camera from the start as well. Anyways.

Sorry my man, it's not BS, I'm gonna defend Carlin, Pryor, the Beatles, against anyone that starts comparing these average guys to the greats. C'mon, are you @$%@ing kidding me? Even this guys own audience doesn't laugh all that much. Don't believe me, go watch some of his concerts. Didn't know my opinion had such a power effect on people. I normally leave people and their opinions, well, alone.

I know many of you are Torrent and Newsgroup junkies, and outside of being some thieving scumbags, you can come up with some good justifications for doing so.

Thank you Kyle for posting this. I will be buying you a beer at CES!

:D

stealthy123, sorry my man, I lost count, I couldn't tell you which number brown noser you are at this point.

Like I said, great concept and good read, I'm still shocked at the $170,000 and oh, I still don't think he is that great of a comedian.

Now, if anyone else wants to clearly brown-nose for the peanut gallery, be my guest, people will see through you just as I have. I'm just a guy for a few opinions that, we can honestly all agree doesn't matter any more or any less than anyone else here.

I don't think carlin is funny, he is sardonic and thought provoking, but not funny.

Louis CK is about 100 times funnier, to me.

Eddie Murphy when he was still dressing in leather suits was about 100 times funnier than Carlin to me too.

Read about how hard Louis CK works, read about how often he is debuting new material, or how many times he rehashes an act.

He is probably one of the most talented minds comedy has known, maybe ever.

Giving credit to someone doesn't mean your shitting on the people who came before, it just means your giving credit to someone.

you disregard others opinions, then thump your chest as you give validation to only your ideas and opinions.

haha, now you're the comedian.

godmachine "Easily this generation's Carlin."

Jesus H Christ .... here we go again. Listen, stop. Please. In the grand scheme of things, this guy is so-so and maybe even not that. Yes, you have a voice here on HardOCP, yes you have our attention, but do you honestly want the one time you stand up here at the HardOCP virtual campefire, that you're remembered for saying something stupid?

Don't you dare compare him to Carlin. What you said there is one hell of a sin. I couldn't tell you how, but you've sinned against something. And not just any sin. I would watch your back if I were you. Something horrible is bound to happen to you now. Things like, frozen waste falling from the sky and hitting you, someone who just won the lottery running you over with his car out of excitement, falling into a sinkhole that leads to a giant deposit of excrement under your city streets. Something bad along those lines.

And while you're at it, you should also just go ahead and compare Justin Bieber to the Beatles.

Having a bad day can excuse your behavior. If it's standard operating procedure, that stinks.

Bought it. I have seen his comedy before, and I like it. Though I'd never usually buy a stand up comedy cause it's often a one shot kind of thing for me, but it's worth buying just to have more of these kinds of offers for other videos. 720p DRM free file for $5, that is exactly what I expect to pay for downloadable movies, concerts, etc...

IMHO if musicians doing concerts put up some cameras at the concerts they played (every one) and offered each one for purchase a couple of days later like this, they'd make a fortune. Not only from the concert goers who want to have the concert they went to on file with music from the sound board, but also from the people who didn't get tickets or couldn't go for some reason.

Bought this the other day and watched it last night. Hilarious! But then again I've been a fan for years, and have attended his live shows, so I'm a little biased.

I hope other entertainers and big media companies are paying attention to this!

Just bought it.

His stuff that comes on my Pandora is pretty funny (unless he's talking about how he's screwing up his children) so here's hoping this doesn't suck.

What are we supposed to do if we hate stand up comedy? Spend $5 on the principle of the thing?

Bought it, downloading now. CK has been hit or miss with me, but I absolutely want to support this kind of thinking. If he succeeds and the morons at the MPAA and RIAA take notice, could be better for everyone.

Read this the other day but held back. Decided to put my money where my mouth is and try to help set an example that digital downloading should definitely be cheaper then a hard copy. Industry shouldn't have it both ways even tho they keep trying.

Looks like someone is on the rag. Seriously , grow up and find a better place for your outlet of fanboy rage. Carlin was an incredible comedian , CK is an incredible comedian .. stop acting like its Kim Kardashian being compared to Jesus Christ.

Man some of you fanboy's are such a whiny bunch.

I know I'm jumping in to this thread very late but I just had to say:

Kyle, there are no good justifications for being a thieving scumbag.

Look at it from another angle. Their was a ton of censorship on TV and G Carlin and The Smothers Brothers etc had to brake the ice on the censorship rules piece by piece. They opened up the door, so to speak that allowed future comedians such as Louie CK and others to use their style of comedy without being blacklisted. As a matter of fact watching the video reminded me of GC in some of Louie's mannerisms. Bottom line, two different styles of comedy, Id pick Carlin as my first choice between the two, if I only had the money to see one. If I had money to see both I would.

I bought a couple days ago. I usually like his work but this special was average. the first half was alright but the second half I thought it was pretty damn funny.

Cheers to more future DRM free things.

Louis CK is the man. Gladly paid my 5 bucks, and will be encouraging the coworkers to do the same. Thanks for the heads up on this Kyle/Steve!

Louis C.K has been my favorite comedian for the last 5 year. His delivery is spot on, and he's a fucking genius.

His joke about the Earth in this special is deep and satirical, not to mention hilarious.

Agreed. I have all his specials and box sets. I was lucky enough to meet him after a show and got my copies signed. I bought the special the second it was available. Not just because he's hilarious but because I believe this is how media should be distributed. No DRM, no bullshit and for a reasonable price.

Never seen/heard of this guy. On youtube now and wow! This guy is great thanks guys I <3 offensive funny comedians! :D

I don't normally participate in such discussions but here is my outlook on this dispute.
While I don't like record/media companies they do employ a lot of people (work problems anyone?) so yeah, we could have cheaper entertainment but some of us would be out of job. In extreme we all could go back to bartering for food in a marketplace in exchange for new shoes to eliminate any middleman but we all know the problems with that system (I hope :) ).

It's not like he did not hire people to produce the video. The fact that this worked likely means that he will hire more people again to produce another comedy special. People still get jobs, big companies are what actually are getting hurt. Since money is going a more direct route to the people making the damn thing.

If the consumer has more money to spend (cutting out the middle man) they can buy more stuff (creating demand for more goods and services).
