Skyrim impressions

Question about this game.

Is this a turned based RPG type (Quest 64) game or more like adventure type (Zelda)?

it's completely open

you literally just go off and do whatever you want.

Well that didn't really answer the question. So it's like Zelda... run around, do what you want because almost all RPGs are like that... I'm more concerned with the attacking method.

Turned based or "skill" based

youtube is invaluable for this. try... "Skyrim Gameplay" ... and Voila!

Doing it that was is for the socially awkward people. I'd rather discuss it with other gamers on a forum I'm a member of to get their point of view, but thanks.

Weird.

There are no turns, you slash at people like in Zelda.

I wouldn't say it matters. Much of the previous lore is explained or at the least hinted at in dialogue. Also, they've re-used a lot of the previous Elder Scroll's books.

That being said, i'll bet there are many nods to Morrowind that have gone over my head since i didn't ever get that far into it.

There is plenty of information online regarding the Elder Scrolls lore if you felt you were in the dark about something, but as others in this thread have said--it's more of a sandbox instead of true RPG. There likely won't be any time where you'll be left wondering about something related to lore because of any quest lines. The quests are just like a shit-ton of mini-stories scattered throughout the giant sandbox.

Hmm.. might have to get this game.

Does it really matter that I've never played the others?

Go for it! Got to start somewhere! :)

Yes, it's a great game. It has its bugs and issues, but beyond that it's great. And with anything its about what YOU like and want and think. I'll probably get crapped on for saying it, but PC gamers (which I am one, so everyone hold their horses) are big whiney babies. So there will always be negative things discussed in length, but rarely the good stuff.

End point: sure, try it. It's a great game imho. And it doesn't matter what others think. Case in point; I loved Arcania, but everyone generally HATED it. But does that really matter to my enjoyment? Nope :)

Only problem I'm having so far with Skyrim is you can tell it's a console first thought. This is all due to the menu system which is plain bad for pc gamers.

So it's an adventure game?

When I think "adventure game", i'm thinking of of the oldschool adventure games such as Monkey Island, Kings Quest, etc. Skyrim is NOT one of those types of games.

The world is also completely open to explore, and it has no set rules on who you have to talk to in any particular order. Games like zelda and Final fantasy are linear - they only have one story and you can only complete it by following the order of the story, from point A --> B --> C, etc. In skyrim, you can pretty much go anywhere and do anything you want. Its more of a sandbox type game, similar to Grand Theft Auto.

If you want to know how the game feels then just go fire up some videos on YouTube.
No reason to waste time explaining it back and forth on a message board.

I do have to give props to Max von Sydow as Esbern and Christopher Plummer as Arngeir (Greybeard)...both of them do a fabulous job with their roles and voice work...too bad most of the others are forgettable

I dunno, I rather liked Colonel Tight as General Tullius in the Imperial Legion quest line.

(Except I kept expecting Cylons to come busting in)

oh shoot... is that him? I need to play the legion questline some time. Normally all my characters have their own interest to keep with, no time for skyrim politics.

That's even better then. I loved GTA.

Think I might pick it up after Christmas then. :D

So...17 FPS in the intro where I get out of the wagon, on only "High" settings @ 2560x1600 and the rig below? WTF? Downloaded 11.12 drivers and 11.11 CAP3, same issue, and now when I hit ESC to the menu, it just flashes green like a strobe light constantly.

I would suggest upgrading your PC.

Level 18 Mage here. Killed Rahgot last night. I was probably WAY under level or power but after what seemed like HOURS I finally did it.

Also, and this came as a surprise to me. Lydia has been my companion since the beginning and last night I gave her some staffs to carry for me and WOW, she was using them in combat, then switching off to her sword after they ran out of magic. Very cool. Didnt know she would do that.

This is why I ditched my 5970 in the end, sick of AMDs support in the last 6 months, it's been diabolical for crossfire, what started off great soon became almost unusable for a lot of titles at launch, I don't pay a premium for that kind of service.

I don't think I've read one good thing about CrossFire, ever.
Yet people still buy it. Amazes me.

"You mean I can buy 2 cheaper cards that perform better than the 1 expensive card? Genius!"
Fools.

Yea, there are some issues, like I said. Reinstall the game and default everything to Ultra. Use some of the ini tweaks Q-BZ linked earlier, then use the 4GB LAA mod. Also, add the mouse tweaks into your ini, default settings are fucking horrible.

I found the game to be basically broken out of the box, too. But now I can run everything maxed out at 1920x1080 with a single HD5850. Once "fixed", you should be fine.

Take out a card and it'll probably play fine. I still haven't played Skyrim... waiting to get back from holidays... but looking at benchmarks it seems one 6970 would work fine and crossfire is just buggy crap that reduces performance instead of increasing it.

I'm not an Nvidia fanboy, but when I had crossfire (both 2x single card and 1x dual card) I was really unimpressed. I've heard of people having success in certain uses, but for single screen gaming I just needed one fairly beefy card.

Yeah, that was my thought process. They've worked great so far.

Ok, I'll disable Crossfire and try those tweaks, thanks LG. I had thought with the new drivers and Skyrim patches this would have been solved by now, obviously not.

Frackin' Stormcloaks!

Not even once? Come on!

I agree, you should always end a story like this with Chewie getting a medal from Princess Leia.
A ceremony in Whiterun would have been pretty cool.
All the notable NPC's show up, like the 'beards and the other folks who helped you along the way [no spoilers]. Maybe on a smaller scale, too.. idk.

Any kind of recognition would be nice, other than the guards in town saying "lol thanks for saving the world bro" as you run past.

I have not played single player RPG for a long time. I really like multi online gaming, but I heard skyrim is pretty good.

Indeed I kept expecting at least one "shut your fracking mouth!" even as an easter egg.

Finally beat his quest. He's still the fracking same. "I don't care how you want it, one way or another your fracking head is going back to Cyrodil." I keep forgeting I'm talking to a general of the empire. It's great.

I beat the game last night, ending was just kinda like what? am I done? ok carry on...

I guess it depends on the choices you make but I felt it was mostly satisfying especially if you don't make the mistake of killing off someone that certain other characters want you to kill.

But yeah, it ends and you're still getting jumped by random dragon attacks all over the place which makes it feel like "Well, what was it all for?"

And if you fast travel a lot? You're going to be fighting dragons like crazy all over the place.

So I'm past 100 hours and I've pretty much finished all the major quests including the main storyline. I'm sad.

I'm in the same boat. All main quests done, right now I'm working on finding places, small misc quests for the last couple Thane titles I'm missing and working on 100 in 2 skills. Oh and working on my last 2 achievements(pick 50 locks, done long ago, and 50 pockets and Master, level 50, I Have 5 levels left).

The daedric and misc city quests are quite interesting. Lots of good side quests.

But not sure how you get hammered with dragons with fast travel. They've always been rare for me. Rarer when I fast travel.
