Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

All I know is in the first 30 days of launch they will have sold over 2 million retail copies. Maybe close to 3 million. Just my guess.

I will be surprised if they don't have in excess of 2 million preorders.

I can't believe how excited I am about this game. Huge Star Wars geek. This is after swearing off MMO's. Cancelled my WoW account awhile back and getting caught up on my backlog.

There's so much hype around this game that if it doesn't do well I just might as well lay in a fetal position and cry. My world was crushed shortly after the release of SWG, so when another Star Wars MMO was announced, man was I stoked. I can't wait to pew pew!

As far as I'm concerned it's already better than SWG. Of course that doesn't take much.

If you are comparing it to the crafting/housing, it does. No other mmo has came even close to how good it was done in SWG since then (and before that UO).

I agree and it's something I wish we had in TOR. I loved the player cities/housing in SWG.

That's what I've heard, but I couldn't give two squirts of piss about that. There should be something more appealing to a game than just crafting. Virtual crafting seems less appealing to me than hanging out at Hobby Lobby all day.

I've played MMO's for nearly 10 years and the entire time and 15 or so MMO's later, i've never given two shits about "crafting" or making stuff, its fucking utterly boring. When I go online, I wanna kill shit and other people and then pay for good, quality stuff. Rinse, repeat. Period.

lol. That just about summarizes my MMO experience. Crafting was always an "Aw fuck I need this item and no one is selling it, I should level my crafting." situation for me

I wasn't a crafter, but it was so fun because all th eplayers crafted stuff WAS useful, the player armor, etc was some of the best equipment in the game and it's what you used at higher lv's.

In turn resources you'd find ou tin the world player crafters would need. They'd pay people to bring them resources to use in crafting, or build things for them.

This gave the entire game economy a sense of community, locally on each planet you'd have known crafters, etc.

You simply do not experience this in other mmo's really, likle WoW or anything, there's no sense of a real "Community" which you have with player crafting/housing like in SWG or UO.

If you never played either UO or SWG, it's easy to say "I don't give a shit" becaus eyou never experienced all it can bring to the table, and not just for the crafters, but everyone else in the world.

When is the last tim ein an mmo you went to a crafters shop, couldn't find what you wanted, he was there in hi sshop and you ask him and he offers to make it for you while you talk a bit and actually carry on conversations like you would do in a real store or such? Then over time you keep using their hsop and they offer you discounts because they get to know you better.

In almost any mmo crafting is treated as a crap-side thing that is tacked on with loot being > player crafted items, where things like Global auction houses ensure you never once have to even talk to the crafter for whatever you need.

It 's like throwing Ebay into the middle ages, and imo that hurts the game more othen helps.

Interesting view, I'd be willing to try it out. I miss things being not Bind on Equip

Well said.... I was a crafter in DAOC but didn't have LGM in all the trades, it worked very much as you describe in the earlier days :).

I had my favorite weapon crafter who used to make me special shit for my rifleman before I went Jedi. Same goes for my food, I had a chef who was the best on the server make me the best food for pvp availabe for buffs and such. Also with armor same story developed a relationship with the best armor crafter on the server and eventuallt recurited him to my guild was awesome. I remember going to the forums to buy skill tapes for retarded amounts of credits. SWG was a good game in it's own way I promise you guys.

I love reading the WoW forums about this game, they saying will be lucky to get 1.5 million subs at best, and barely put a dent into WoW players base

In my opinion, this is the first MMO to be a true threat to WoW, I see this game being huge, and why can't it compete against WoW successfully ?

It will be the first MMO to really challenge WoW. I can easily see this game getting 2-3 million subs 12-18 months after launch. Maybe more actually.

Hopefully it's good enough to deserve it.

Count me in the crafting was awesome in SWG camp. The rest of it was what was bad...

Think of it this way....some people may not like to raid, or do dailies. If a similar crafting system were implemented in TOR, it would give the world economy real meaning and attract players that might not want to do all that stuff. Maybe a guys wife who would not normally play games like this would enjoy hopping on the game to survey for minerals and just craft as a casual time waster. If the other half of the game is set, there is no reason to think that an excellent crafting system would not be a boon to the game. Let's face it, WoW is grinding down because it's the same old same old. If you are getting bored with grinding dungeons and doing dailes...there is nothing left ot do. However, if the crafting wasn't so generic...you can go out in the world, look for the best materials and make things that make a significant difference to the rest of the game. Just my opinion.

One thing I liked about SWG was the lighting changes. Since there wasn't much to do as for organized dungeons and quests early on, it was sometimes nice to come home after a hard day of work, get the mats from my extractors and place new ones. Set up a camp and make some cool stuff to toss on my vendor when the suns went down. I liked teaming up with guys to go hunt Krayts and invade the Tusken stronghold too, but there was something to do if your buddy wasn't on that day or you couldn't get enough people to get one of this hot spots going.

In WoW, we are seeing the pendulum shift again. WoW was more popular than SWG because of the content, but now that the content is shifting and rehashing for the umpteenth time...populations are starting to dwindle...

I enjoyed the crafting system in SWG, I disliked their implementation of some of the professions but I'm barely scratching the surface and I'd like to stay away from. WoW is WoW and they've had a good run. I think SWTOR will garner interest from many because it has worldwide recognition. There's high expectations from this game so if Bioware botches this up, man, it'll probably be another decade or two for someone to explore the idea of another SW MMO. I've enjoyed many MMO's but left because it got "old and tired," let's hope SWTOR has enough content to make me stick around.

Again.. couple new videos of a flashpoint, showing some 1337 sniper skills.

Wonder how fun it would be to play a non-force user

I'm also contemplating going a non force user. I'll be looking more into the Imperial Agent and how well they heal compared to the Sith Inquisitor.

If I were to play this game I'd definitely go for a non force user. I mean how legit would it be to be just some dude and totally kick some Jedi ass.

I hope they get the game balanced right at release

MMORPG's are never "balanced right" :). It's obscenely hard to do so and even then there's no real way to have things "balanced" in every situation, which would make things quite boring if they ever managed to do so.

Which is very often based on opinion, as well as situation, not actual balance issues. As I said... :).

Typically at release you have classes that are just plain broken. (Ret Paladins in WoW classic before they got fixed) (Tempest of Set in AoC) (Warrior Priest / Oathbearer duos)

It's going to be amusing when all the "I'M SICK OF WOW" crowd that flocks to TOR realizes they're going to be pretty much the same games, just with different IP's.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. If TOR is the same as WoW with a different end game and atmosphere people will love it

I'm not doubting some people will love it, I am saying though that the former wow diehards that are now 'WOW SUCKS' monkeys that are lining up to play TOR are going to get a surprise if they think the themepark on rails McMMO formula is changing.

Looks like EA just announced that the 7 day headstart will now apply to both the CE and Regular editions it will just be based on how soon you entered your promo code.
