Mortal Kombat: Rain character DLC $5, July 19

That's just for the 360 version tho isn't it?

Correct. Honestly, whats the big deal. I've been paying for DLC for awhile now, especially for Mass Effect series. If I want something that looks good enough, i'll pay for it, simple as that.

And Mortal Kombat has been my sleeper hit of the year so far. I'm really enjoying the hell out of it, reminds me alot of my golden MK2 days were it was just simply FUN.

Having the characters available as separate purchases isn't a bad way to go if you just want to pick and choose who you want in your line-up and don't want to pay a higher price for a bunch of characters when you only want one. Street Fighter 4 has downloadable "kits" that let you play against opponents using characters/outfits you haven't bought (so the player base isn't fragmented), so I'd expect MK to implement something similar.

The $5 isn't just for the character though...I don't have the game but I'm assuming the character will have its own dialogue and cutscenes, and obviously its own fatalities, special moves, x-ray moves, combo lists, animations, fighting stance, etc. It's not as simple as just throwing in another palette-swapped character model like they would if this was UMK3 or something.

Personally I think they could make more money by selling the DLC for cheaper because more people would buy it. Its not like the extra downloads and support will cost much and development cost is the same. And having cheap DLC that a lot of people buy would help with brand loyality because people will play the game longer and get more enjoyment from the purchase, thus being a more satisfied customer. It could also ease the hatred that some people have for DLC since it can be annoying knowing that your game isn't as complete as it could be but you can't justify spending the extra money. That can cause conflict with your customer and drive them to a different brand.
If I ran a company that did download based sales I would rather have 2,000,000 $2.50 sales than 1,000,000 $5 sales for the same product. Plus maybe those 2,000,000 buyers will go buy another $2.50 download. A larger and happy customer base is always good.

For example my friend heard about the discount for the 4 characters on the 360. However he didn't know it was only for the 360 and he thought the $10 kombat pass was the pack. He had never bought DLC before and was still torn between getting it or not but after a while decided to get it since $10 seemed like a good deal. But when he went to get it he found out that he was mistaken and that the pack was actually $15 and not available for the PS3. So that was upsetting to him, yeah it was his mistake but still that bad experience could affect his future DLC and MK purchases.

I'm sorry, but who the hell honestly thinks that an game add on content advertised on a Microsoft product, on a microsoft hosted web based service is gonna work on a Sony based machine and web service? Your friend needs to read a bit more on products before buying methinks...

Methinks you are jumping to conclusions. I never said where he saw it and I never said he bought anything. He saw it on some game review site and they didn't make it clear that it was a 360 exclusive.

But the point is he would of bought it for $10 but won't at $20. So now they lost out on $10 and possibly more money on future DLC.

Not sure about how great the DLC for MK is, but I do tend to lean in the direction of lower prices = more sales. Look no further than games like Angry Birds and Doodle Jump that are only $1 or $2 and have sold literally millions and millions of copies. They don't make much on each one, but the volume makes up for it.
I'd think that if DLC characters were cheap, but very easy to download (maybe an in-game interface tied into XBL or the PSN store) they'd sell a lot more.

I don't see this as a bad deal. I'll get more playtime out of these characters than I would any $10 to $15 map pack. Guess it’s a matter or perspective.
comparing a crappy deal to an even more crappy deal doesnt make it any less crappy

Totally agree and wasn't bothered in the slightest about Skarlett and Kenshi but Rain is tempting me, throw in Cyborg Smoke and I'll bite twice.......

...and I thought Super SF4 AE was a rip off...

Not really If you had the original SF4, then to get 4 more characters the first time, you needed to buy SSF4.

After the last full price game with 4 more characters, a few months later they released the same game again with a bonus 4 characters for full price.

If they had released the extra characters seperately I would have been more inclined to get them, but paying $15 per extra character and a few minor differences doesn't sound like much of a deal. Added to that they sold costume packs for each of the games at not so cheap prices, which were non transferable between games.

The thing about Super SF4 is that it was more than just 4 new characters. It had 8 new characters, and was a complete overhaul on the game. Everyone got new ultras, new moves were added (and old ones tweaked), new backgrounds were added, everything got new cinematics, etc. It was a true sequel to SF4.
Arcade edition added 4 characters...and of those 4, Evil Ryu is about as un-unique as possible. Yun and Yang are also about as unique as Ken and Ryu, too.
Beyond those things - we got damage adjustments and a few frame data changes...and that's all. They didn't even bother to add the new characters to challenge mode.
AE should've been $10. The prices they were charging for costumes were an absolute crime. They were Capcom's "horse armor."

I hope they release all the DLC characters and then announce a PC port with all those characters included and I'll buy it for $40.

So, his defense sucks and he gets mulched easily. His combos are stupid easy.

4,3 lightning bolt, 4,3 around the world kick, 4,3 rain ball, combo of choice after.

46% no meter combos on day one.
