I've been messing with Amazon's Cloud Drive all afternoon and I have to say it is very, very cool. You get 5GB of space for free and, if you buy an MP3 album from Amazon, you'll get 20GB of free storage for a year.

5 GB of free online storage. Your Cloud Drive comes with 5 GB of free storage—enough space to store up to 1000 songs. This space is yours to use as you like and you will never be charged for it. Use your Amazon Cloud Drive as the go-to location for all your important files. At work, at home, during your commute or while on vacation—you'll always have access to everything you've uploaded to your Cloud Drive through your Amazon account.

I do not like the idea of being tethered to a cloud.

Think of it as Dropbox where you can access your mp3s anywhere you are instead of having to make a copy of it on every device you listen to it through.

it plays songs off your phone too if you purchased from i-tunes like i did.

Do not like the idea of my stuff being stored elsewhere. I'm a big boy. I don't need someone to store it for me.

I can add it to my storage space. Using Gladinet, already have 25GB of Live Space being used as an offsite backup for the pics and such I take.

Gladinet should be supporting this soon (according to dev).

I'll never say no to offsite backup spots.

Do you run your own off site backups somewhere? I'm guessing not, hence why you're still just a boy and not a man :-P

Fyi, amazon lets you download the music you upload in addition to streaming it. It isn't a case of uploaded and it's "stuck" in the cloud.

What that sounds like to me is, if you want to use Cloud Drive during your commute or on vacation, you'd better trust whatever network you're on enough to log into your Amazon account through it.

Should be ok as it's SSL encrypted. Keylogging and people watching over your shoulders for your credentials is what you should watch for.

The 5GB would be limiting for Vacation.
I use 8GB cards in my cameras, and on my last 2 week vacation I came back with over 20GB of pictures & videos :)

Most attractive point- songs from Amazon MP3 never count toward your storage limit.

I've bought tons of MP3s from Amazon in the past four years...wonder if I can upload those and use the "reserved space"

Maybe if apple (and maybe others?) would put SD slots in the stuff this wouldn't be needed.

5GB is not even one 1080p movie.

Considering how cheap drive space is, I don't see the point. You're not going to duplicate much data w/ such a tiny cloud.

They have miniscule USB flashdrives that fit on your keychain and hold over three times the amount of data, and it works without an internet connection. Mine is roughly the size and thickness of a penny, and has password protection.

Apparently this only applies to *new* Amazon MP3 purchases. I uploaded nine albums of Amazon MP3s purchased prior to 3/28/2011, and they consumed 1.2GB of the free 5GB allotted. Dat sucks.

Amazon has an archive of every MP3 I've purchased from them. They should just stuff those already purchased in the cloud anyways.

it is pretty cool. im waiting for someone to write some interface to map the drive though, there doesnt seem to be folder uploading support and im not about to select 1000s of files within multiple folders on my own to upload. ill wait till i can drag and drop or select a whole folder to upload.

That would be nice; I did upload a whole folder of about 1000 files last night. Just open the folder, hit CTRL-A, then open. It will upload them all.

I left it uploading about 4 gigs last night, unfortunately it seems to have frozen or my ISP timed out with about 1.5 left.

Adjective

S: (adj) tethered (confined or restricted with or as if with a rope or chain)

Cloud = available from anywhere with an internet connection. How is that tethered?

Dropbox and cloud stuff owns. Dropbox is awesome on my phone.

I haven't had a notable collection of mp3 on my computer in years, I just stream everything now. Pandora is amazing and if I really have a boner for something specific then I can just use youtube.

Wouldn't it suck if you bought a couch and you had to pay a license fee to Macys every time you moved? Or had to sign a new contract to put it in storage?

That would suck.

But wouldn't it be badass if you had a baller couch and could use it wherever you go?

Well there was that fat guy in Ohio I think who sat in his couch for 2 years straight and "fused" to it. I guess technically he got to take his couch wherever he went. :D
