Captain Kirk Explains Microprocessors

7000 transistors,... Sandy Bridge has 995 million! The Intel 8085 (yes 8085) had 6500 transistors.

To boldly go where no bad actor has gone before!

No redshirts were killed in the making of this video!

BTW, I don't remember seeing Capt Kirk in this video.. cuz if he was in it, I am sure he would have managed to rip enough of his shirt to expose his chest, and find a green Orion slave girl to lip-lock with! All I saw was Kirk's doppelgänger. Also Kirk would have beamed into this video instead of just being seen on a viewscreen.

The shat was in good shape before he drowned his wife.

She was near death levels on alcohol and Valuim and it was far from the first time. This was refuted by many including Leonard Nemoy who took her to AA meetings and months and months of rehab numerous times. As much media hype it that it could have made and the money that the media could have made off the possibility of it being a murder, it was ruled accidental. Those who knew her said she was on the edge of killing herself since day one.

Just think, without this commercial, we may never have seen the Negotiator in action for the Priceline ads. It would have been a tragedy :D

Google for this Intel_Chip_Article.pdf

Explains the full process with pics how a chips is made. That was with the Nehalem ones so it ain't that old

haha nice video. totally from the late 70's and early 80's with that music.

It was just a joke. I don't see how it could be considered offensive by someone who hits cats with hammers. :)

It's probably still "too soon" for all my GULag jokes, also?

I was kind of shocked when he said a news paper has just as much information as an educated individual from the 16th century.

This video is awesome. It's almost soothing in a way. And it makes some pretty accurate predictions that seem to have taken place in the last 30 years since it was made.

A news paper has just as much information as an average individual from the 21st century.

Thanks for the link. Great stuff, beautifully filmed as well !

Probably one of Shatners best performances too ;)

I thought it was amazing that he spoke of only 17,000 transistors in a processor comparing that to today.

Makes one wonder what will happen in 20-30 years from now... wonder if a supra conducting material has been made/found that works in room temperature 0_o And used for processors :p

Carbon Nanotubes: the next asbestos

Remember to watch this while imagining him bald because Shatner was already bald and wearing toupees and advanced hairpieces to cover this up when he was filming the original Star Trek in the 60s.

i thought this was a well made video, very educational too for the people of the time. Of course its old news for us, but back then, this was new and exciting, the world of electronics was just opening up.

Fascinating. Actually there's a good a lot of correct prophecy in here, the mention of the phone as becoming a computer and computer networks and the understanding of how this would change over lives but not exactly always understanding just how as even today the implications of uses of technology aren't always understood when they are developed.

I liked the discussion of the transistor, the most significant invention to date in human history, but it was a Bell Labs video and of course that's where the transistor was invented.

This video was highly creepy! I thought aliens were going to pop out of the chips and suck out brains, right before Kirk set his gun to "stun"

William Shatner has been entertaining me since I was old enough to sit in front of a TV.
Rare combination of dramatic and comedic ability along with a freakish sense of self-awareness. He is not regarded nearly high enough.

Long live the Shatner...

Thanks for posting.

Totally agreed.

So, this is Shatner's version of Nimoy's Bilbo Baggins song?

Nimoy wins again. The Bilbo Baggins song is *way* more nails-on-the-chalkboard creepy, but this was a good showing.

The video was great. but boy that twilight zone-esque music was creepy

I'm not sure why they chose creepy music for a video which is supposed to teach people about Microprocessors. I liked it though.
