What do you use for tethering, I prefer USB Tethering and not having to root my new EVO so these programs should work?

I did some research on google and they both have good reviews. I am leaning more towards EasyTether because the full version is only $9.99. From what I gather the free version denies https after a few weeks and that is what the full version allows?

EasyTether. Way better app. Don't need to actually DO anything. Just plug in and go if USB debugging is turned on and the client is running on the computer.

Full version allows full browsing w/ HTTPS.

Worth it.

Now is there absolutely NOTHING to do? I've tried pdanet but can't get the correct drivers to install on my machine. It just sits there forever and never gets anywhere.

I use PDANet - was pretty straight forward to install, but I do recall that the install did appear to hang there for a while..... But that was back in August, so I don't really remember. How long did you let it run for?

I use PDANet on my DroidX. Works well for me. Need to have the client and drivers installed on the leech box and set up debugging on the USB. It can also be done via Bluetooth.

Ok I got easytether up and running with my EVO, very easy to install and use, very fluid. It is like having Wifi with the 4G network.

I use PDAnet for my Droid Incredible... took maybe 5 minutes tops to install/set up, and now I just plug in the USB cable to connect seamlessly (automatic within a couple of seconds).

I let it try to install drivers for probably half an hour; I just let it go while watching some college football. It never installed the drivers it was looking for.

I was finally able to connect my laptop using Easy Tether Lite. I will verify everything and post back when I confirm I can continue connecting! This app may be the way to go.

:Ready to get slapped:

But why does the EVO need a tethering app when it seems as USB tether is an available and included feature of the phone and plan. Thought I heard part of the 4g mandatory $10 charge covers free usb tethering and you only get nailed with WiFi tethering with WiFi hotspot feature... ?

I know for me personally...the app is the only way I can tether the phone to a computer. If i attempt to use the built-in ability of my Epic 4G, it never ever ever works. Drivers are installed, some drivers are NEVER installed by the computer, and I just can't connect. I am now able to tether my phone to my laptop using Easy Tether Lite...plus i can make calls and send text messages from the phone. I am considering paying the $9.99 for the full version of the app now.

Hmm. Good to know. It'd be a pain needing it in emergency only to find out my EVO won't cooperate. Thank You

yeah the whole tethering/hotspot functionality is a big gray area for me, at least as far as Sprint is concerned. Looking at the phone itself, you would think all signs point to GO for hotspot or tethering functionality out of the box. However, trying to use these features results in "Data call failure" every time. Reading around, it appears I would need to spend another $40/month to get that functionality.

Instead, I bought easytether for $10 and it appears to work very well.

When I was travelling recently I was downloading a TV episode from amazon over 4G at over 4000kbps. That's better than most public wifi will give you :)

newbie to teathering here, so i must ask, does this cost more then what the standard verizon unlimited data package entails?

Thanks

If you do have unlimited data, then tethering using these apps won't cost extra as far as data usage. There are free and paid versions of the apps, however, so that may be an extra cost. The paid version of East Tether allows for connections to https sites, as well as IM clients and such.

What about hotspot? Does a custom ROM allow for hotspot sharing?

I use EasyTether, works great. I'm rooted anyway, but you don't need to be as far as I know.
