On this boxen, can I use one of my Keys from TechNet, or should I go on Ebay and buy a physical disk and Key for vista or something?

I'm in this box a bunch of money as it is, but If I need to get an OS that is what I'll do.

Or should I send just hardware and no OS?

I'd do hardware only. Most of the people around here shouldn't have any problem furnishing their own OS for it.

Pending the legality of it, I could also provide a technet key if you are running low.

I believe the keys are for personal use only. I'd just load linux on it and have it setup for WINE gpu folding and the native linux smp client.

I certainly do not need an OS, as I am sure most people here don't. At most you should wait until the winner is chosen then see if they need it, or just send it without one regardless.

Ok, I've been awake way too long, but do you care to tell me what tech net is? How many keys of what products do you get? Price?

I have an XP Home upgrade I could part with. Now you need a OEM 98 or ME disk! :D:D:D

If I can find my Vista Ultimate 64 disk, I could give up my XP PRO x64 disk. I'm really tired of cleaning though!

I vote for hardware only. Any tech or cruncher worth their salt should be able to either purchase their own license if they want to run Windows or download a Linux ISO should they chose to do that route. I blew all my usable income this month already on a video card to attempt to fold my way to 75k. But since I can't seem to make that card work that doesnt look likely. heh.

Hardware only. Giving away a Technet key like that is technically a violation of the EULA. Or just stick Ubuntu 10.04 on it to ship it with an OS and let the person who wins it put a different OS on if they want to.

+1 for hardware only or Ubuntu install. It's not worth it violating the terms of the technet EULA.

Vaulter98c - technet is a way to get full working copies of all Microsoft OS's, office applications and an assortment of applications. You pay Microsoft an upfront fee and can then download the software right from Microsoft (office 2010 is already available for download by the way). You typically get 10 keys per software SKU (many of which can be activated multiple times). It only costs ~300 per year (look for a coupon code before signing up). The only rub is that the software is for evaluation purposes only -absolutely can't be used in a production environment. Also the software does not expire even if your year runs out and you don't renew. Check it out with the below link:

So if I pay 300$ I can get a bunch of 7-64 keys and some server 08 keys? Then I don't have to renew and I'm good for life?

Tempting...

yep.

At least, that's what we all think when we sign up.

At least you're good until the next version of office or windows comes out.

You get 10 keys for the majority of software and OSes MS has except for server OSes. Generally, you only get 1 key for server OSes. Each key is usually good for 10 activations before it "expires". Except for the activation limit, the keys will not expire even if you allow the Technet subscription expire. The software is the full retail version and indistinguishable from what you would buy in the store. The caveat to using Technet is that the software is supposed to be used for testing purposes only. You are not supposed to use the software on production machines (although we're folding and testing out the machines so that's good enough for me) and you cannot give away or sell keys.

Kendrak, there is no way I would use a Technet key for a giveaway machine. I wouldn't even put a Microsoft OS on the machine unless you have a spare OS around you don't mind giving away which includes the key and the disc. I would personally ship it with an installed Linux distro ready for folding or if the winner prefers it to have no OS, ship it with no OS on the machine.

id say send it without an OS because people tend to have their own preferences.. some people still like running XP.. some like running windows vista.. and some like windows 7.. but people also have different preferences on which versions of xp, vista, windows 7 they want to run.. some like the ultimate version and some like me like the pro version of windows 7 because its not filled with a bunch of useless software thats not needed in the ultimate version..

That is what I figured with technet. Just wanted to make 100% sure before I killed that idea.

I did however find this on the inside panel on a case that I just got from Evil.... Would this work?

Yes, that would work providing it is not attached to a copy of Windows that is already in use. You should ask Evil and make sure before you do anything.

Evil gives his permission! Go forth and fold my friend! Glad you like the new Case!

Well I know what I'll be doing tomorrow between diaper changes
