Neowin reports that Wikipedia’s arbitration board “ArbCom” handed down a project-wide ban on all IP addresses owned by the Church of Scientology for what they call “disruptive editing”. Follow the jump for more.

This is the first time that an entire organization's IP address block has been banned from editing Wikipedia, despite individual IPs being blocked in the past from other organizations, such as the US DoJ in 2008.

Get ready for a lawsuit, Wikimedia.Or twelve. Or thirteen. Or seventy-four.

I am sure there will be lawsuits...but does not Wiki's end-user state that they may ban anyone IP's for what Wiki considers overzealous/wrong/false editing? hehe too lazy to look myself.

Lawsuit? Umm no. Wiki doesn't have to let anyone use thier site. They own it and can choose to allow access or not as they see fit.

You're attempting to apply logic to legal proceedings.

That doesn't mean the SoC won't file suit. I can pretty much guarantee you that they will at least try.

The SoC is renowned for abusing the legal system with frivolous lawsuits, not unlike the RIAA. It doesn't really matter to them if their claims are bogus or nonsensical or entirely without any legal merit.

DC9s carried Thetons through outer-space, to earth, who were placed around a volcano and murdered by way of a nuclear weapon. The spirits of these thetons are now responsible for all the problems with humanity.

LOL at Scientology.

Yeah, that's right: the Scientology of Church, founded by author Hubbard Ron L.

Yeah that's what fucking crack's me up about all this Scientology stuff..It was created by a mediocre SciFi writer and all around nut job. LOL!

Don't mock scientology! Xenu is real, he is within all of our spirits each and every night and day!
Oh wait Tom Cruise the self-hating homo is part of this cult, nevermind.

I love how everyone makes fun of Scientology when their own religions are JUST as ridiculous. Jesus Christ turned into a ghost and flew up into space, too, you know. He also payed taxes with magical money vomited from fish. I say ban all religious organizations from editing anything in Wikipedia that doesn't directly pertain to the Wiki entry on their religion.

Oh man, I just watched the South Park episode about Scientology and I laughed my butt off.

Mediocre!?

He wasn't a nutcase. He created it on purpose to make money. I'm pretty convinced of the Bar Bet theory with Heinlein. It makes sense, given that Scientology is all about paying your way to the top.

I try to give the followers the benefit of the doubt by assuming they know it's stupid but really like money and need something to do.

Oh yeah, ban everyone who thinks a certain way, even if they have never actually harmed anyone, because you don't agree with them. That's a great idea.

Funny :)
I suspect they will try some kind of online warfare, after all its their nature.

If it's altering something to their religious views, and it has no basis on the subject at hand or is damaging the featured material, then yeah ban their arses, it's almost as bad as web site vandalism.

They're a cult. You truly believe they've never "harmed" anyone?

Read what he wrote. He is not talking about scientology.

Fair enough. Though I personally believe that most, if not all religions have harmed someone in some way at some point in history.

But I also don't believe they should all be censored. In this case it seems feasible to do so because Scientology is not a religion.

Scientology is a con job,a cult for the rich.It amazes me that people like Travolta and Cruise can fall for it,but then actors can be a flaky lot.A religion dreamed up by a no talent sci-fi author whose books were so bad that Travolta probably lost a fortune backing the movie adaptation of Battlefield Earth, renowned as one of the worst movies ever made.

The "church" of scientology is a farce, as are all organized religions.....some are just more cult-ish.

Christianity is just as bad as muslim, they both have killed many in the name of god. There have been more people murdered, raped, pillaged, exploited, and dehumanized in the name of religion, than ALL of the wars combined, ever.

Religion is an easy way out, it takes away the need for self reliance (god will take care of you), it is based on fear. Religion is not a choice for most, our children are indoctrinated into it early, it is forced upon them at a time when they are impressionable and trusting of what we tell them. Our children are infected early by this virus of the mind and this causes much stress as they grow older, some are finally freed from the shackles if they trust their own minds enough to step away from the fear they were saddled with. As children, we are told that we face this eternal death of hell if we don't have "faith" and believe these incredible stories that make absolutely no sense, it's no wonder at this early age, when the world is brought to us this way, that we take it to heart.

Yeah...I don't believe in the christian doctrine any longer...I used to, but I learned to see through the silliness of it all. I am a good person, I treat others well, I love my family 200%, I don't need some un-perfect, flawed other person telling me how to live my life....

Jesus was most likely a real man, however, I do not think he was the son of god, I think he was a person with some good ideas that got him killed for his beliefs. I think he had a wife, etc., and I certainly do not believe in the virgin birth.

So true haha, that movie sucked more dick than a room full of catholic priests...;)

*grabs flame suit*

I pretty much agree. Religion is typically a means for one to live vicariously through another entity. In the case of Christianity, that entity is God. In Scientology, it's more of the belief in the cosmos and matter and their make-believe human-restorative properties and not in any specific entity. Not unlike the Force, oddly enough (though the Force is curiously less silly than Dianetics/Scientology).

That being said, I don't necessarily disrespect anyone who seeks religion, and I don't routinely go around bashing specific religions or religion in general, though I'm often strongly opposed to their religious views as they pertain to political and civil rights matters. Religious zealots have a tendency to want to impart their nonsensical religious beliefs into governmental policy (prop 8, anyone?), for some reason. That rationalization for that kind of nonsense is nothing more than pure personal arrogance.

:D arnt they also in trouble in france where they are legally classed as a cult not a religion

+1 to TheRapture

Just because you don't believe in others 'gods' does that instantly make you a bad person? Sadly most overly religous idiots will basicly say yes and that you are going to that religons form of hell. Going to stop there going way off topic.....

My brother-in law once worked as a free-lance programmer for these yo-yos back in the nineties. I'd love to go into the list of things that make them a crazy cult, but thanks to Wikipedia they are now on their was to obscurity.
