LOVED my Opteron 170 @ 2.4 , but after many years of exclusive AMD support, i have fled camp in broad daylight, and am truly enjoying the fresh air..

Don't get me wrong, I can see me fleeing eventually, but to move is going to cost a new build from scratch, and I cant justify the $500 or so price tag - along with another windows install (groan). Is Intel better? Hell yes. Is it $500 better? IMO no, not when my rig does everything quickly now.

If I had a single core and crap MB I'd have jumped already, but 2.6 on a 1meg per core Opteron is no slouch even by Intel standards. Combine that with a great MB and fast ram and there's not a game out I can't play very smooth at 1280x1024 or 1440x900 (crysis notwithstanding).

If anything I'll pick up a 3870x2 when crossfire x drivers come out for some 3 GPU goodness.

I jump when my comp doesn't perform as well as I like it to, don't see any reason to do it before then. Guess I'm not as [H]ard as I used to be. ;)

Still sitting on a DFI SLI-DR and X2 3800+.

Planning on changing camps soon, but the system still performs. 2GB RAM + Vista 64bit + 8800GTS 320MB works like a champ. A switch would be a complete rebuild.

so, ditto to ^^^ that guy.

As President of this alliance, I say its time to let go of our beloved s939 systems, and close this thread! ...

Let go and joined the dark side, oh illuminated one. See my sig for the Core 2 Quad goodness I've migrated to :p

I just sold my Opteron 165 @2.6, it did perform well, but I get roughly the same performance with a very low end Conroe chip, the E2200, and it is currently clocked at a stock 2.2, with lots of headroom to overclock. The board (Gigabyte EP35-DS3L) and CPU cost me $164.99, and 2GB of DDR2 will be $19.99 after rebate. Of course, I already had a 4850 so that part was in the bag.

Other option of course was to stay AMD with an AM2/2+ board. In the end I went with the blue team...

You guys need to let go of skt 939, i upgraded to the LGA 775 socket(with a C2D) a long while ago and its a way better performer then skt 939. Skt 939 is still good for those who just go on the internet or as some have said there wife uses it. I still have a skt 939 system that i built, but i haven't turned it on in years(It's now my dads PC). But all my gaming is on my Core 2 Duo system and i am soon upgrading to a Core 2 Quad and a 9800 GX2:):)

I've just ditched my 939 system and gone to an AM2+ 750a based setup with a 9850 Black Edition. Reasons for upgrading were:

1.RAM - 4GB max on the nforce 4 whereas now I will be having 8GB (4x2) and if they come down in price I'll upgrade to 16GB (4x4).
2.Quad Core - I am a heavy multitasker (my systray and taskbar are chocka block full!) and whilst the Opteron Dual Core was nice I just wanted those extra cores!
3.Energy Efficiency - my new system uses less power than my old one and since I pay the power bill these days I'm quite keen on such things!

Ok and I admit:

4.I wanted a new toy to play with. Yes it's true, there's a certain thrill that comes with upgrading that no amount of loyalty or self-discipline seems to be able to oppose.

haha true. My socket 775 E2200 system is not really much faster than my Opty but it's nice to have a new toy!

Well I'm still waiting for someone to test an oc'd opty with the latest and greatest usiing the same video card in both. So far I have no reason to upgrade other then vid card, unless some one can prove a major difference. I'v gone to a few other sites asking the same and there havn't been any takers, I'm starting to wonder why.

Your prolly right, but, what modern games can't I play well with two 9800gtx in sli, an opty 175@ 2.65ghz, and 4 gigs of ram on Xp32/Vista64 dual boot?

I did upgrade to a Q9300@ 3.2ghz, 8 gigs of ram, and soon a 4870X2 if it lives up to the hype. It is a lot faster, especially at video encoding, but the first system I listed is still a quite viable gaming, and pretty much everything else, rig. A year or so from now that may not be the case, but right now it is.

I have 2 media centers built around the 939 4200x2, and my gf's machine also has a 4200x2. Picked those CPU's up for about $55 last fall from newegg. :D They work great in their roles. Early this year my main computer did go to the other side. Sold my opty 185 for a q6600. I had the 185 @ 3 ghz, just like I have the q6600 at 3 ghz now. I can't tell a difference in gaming, but I do more video work then anything, and of course there is a difference. There will always be a place in my heart for the 939 socket. Those systems just worked.

I got the 4800 X2...Right now, I don't have a card I trust with CSS...X700 is running instead of the 7900GS since it fried. Now I need a new card....and probably will do the big 3 later.

I still use my Socket 939 AMD 4200+ cpu. It was the best CPU purchase i made in my entire lifetime. Still performs fast, still is able to play all the new games. Great qaulity but the overclocking wasn't that great.

This October I will be buying a new CPU most likely the i7 2.66ghz. I would like to stay with AMD but they don't have nothing worthy to buy at the moment.

I ran 3D mark06 with the 4850 in my Opteron before pulling it. Got 9705 3D marks I think it was. I was running an Opty 165 at 2615 mhz

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7703356

I now have a low end E2200 Intel. I will it again with the Intel, same exact video card, mind you the E series is one of the lowest power Conroe CPU's.

I used to have an epic Socket A club at TPU. too bad Thermopylae deleted it on "accident"

I'll join here. .I have a 3500+ Manchester, on a ECS RD480-A939 mobo

Still cuddling with his 175 @2.6, and flashy light DDR Corsair ram. However, I'll have to leave this boat if the next gen intel is impressive, and just transition to DDR3.

Wow, this thread got some life lately. I'm still rocking my X2 4200+ Socket 939'er. I don't have plans to replace it for another couple years. :)

X2 4800+ w/ IHS removed in a DFI sli-dr expert, 2 gigs corsair at 1T, 7800gtx in sli. Used to be all danger den water cooled, but back to air for a portable gamer.
Still does plenty what I need it to do until I compare it to this new QX9650....just can't seem
to part w/ it tho. it was AMD's last set of good chips imo b4 intel brought out the guns.

I'm letting go of my X2 4400+ this week when I get my new AM2+ board and 9850. I really needed more CPU muscle for all the flight-simming I've been doing. My girlfriend will get plenty of use out of the 939, though.

Im still rollin w/ Opteron 165 @ 2.8ghz stock volts on a DFI Lanparty SLI DR Expert, with a HD 3850...soon to be 4850...
My primary use is gaming on this machine...and to tell the truth, most games still heavily rely on your GPU more than CPU, when your resolution is higher....
On a high resolution CPU bottlenecks to graphics really dont exist, only one minor area, and they are still plenty fast for is like AI and such of a game....but in many cases with many games, that requires nothing compared to the power needed to render the graphics at higher resolutions...in that area a CPU still does not bottleneck.

One thing I wish for was this board being able to run 4GB reliably but....oh well, 2GB does it for me now in almost anything =)

I have two s939 machines still in operation. Opteron 180 and 144. Been reliable workhorses for me and should continue to serve their roles well for a couple more years, really.

I am running Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe w/185 Opty. 3870 x 2 crossfire.
Also foxconn with a 175 Opty

My main PC is using an ABIT KN8 Ultra 939 and Opteron 165. I have another 165 and a 144 that are still in their boxes. Just have to find some inexpensive MB's for them.

Got my new DFI Lanparty fired up today, wish it was crossfire like my old board so I didnt have a second 2600 collecting dust but oh well great board.

I still using my two and a half year old 939 [email protected]. Still works fine for everything I do. When the Nehalems come out and get into a reasonable price range I think I'll jump ship though.

My main rig is still churning along dandy with my X2 4400+ Toledo 939 in it... Just over 2.5 years old. I actually forgot it was a 939 until I was looking to upgrade my processor and video card. Realized there was no real upgrade for the processor, so I just replaced my 7800GT with an HD3850 (512 MB version) until a game comes out that I want to play and need to upgrade for.

(this will probably be somewhere along the Diablo3 or SC2 lines... which will be out sometime in the next decade I'm guessing)

my backpc (which I recently acquired) has amd64 3000+ + Asus A8N-SLI Premium. got it pretty cheap because it was supposedly faulty (which is not true!).

I still have an Abit AV8 (AGP) and AMD64 3000+ gathering dust (which I'm keeping as reserve)

====

main rig is a 6600 G0 PC :D

I am rocking my X2 3800+ and 3000+ in my old boxes. Both are still silky smooth :p

Still using my S939 FX60 based machine with 8800GTX

Almost bit the bullet a few weeks ago and thought about upgrading to newer Intel QUAD CPU, P45 and perhaps one of the new NVIDIA or ATI video cards...but changed my mind. The games I currently play and the rez I play them at (1680x1050) does not warrant upgrading.

You guys need to let go of skt 939... Skt 939 is still good for those who just go on the internet
Oh yeah, 'cause the internet uses so much resources now, unlike the days when a Pentium MMX could access the web... C'mon, seriously now. Besides gaming, there really is no need for the latest, greatest quad-core goodness. Even in the gaming realm, I'm guessing that over 90% of games run fine in what you call "only good for the internet" machines.
Wow, this thread got some life lately.
Too bad all the response is nay-sayers ditzing our choice to continue running our SK939's.

If y'all have transitioned to Intel, or even AM2... that's fine, I got no beef. I know the performance is higher. So, move on and leave us to chat about 939's.

The fact is, SK939 is far from dead... more like retired greyhounds, looking for a loving home. :D
