GTA 4: PS3 or 360?

Well the GF handed me the receipt today for the GTA-IV special edition for the PS3 for my B-Day (which is monday) so now monday at midnight i can pick up the preorder :)

i sort of forced her hand when i told her i was on my way to futureshop to buy it.

I love her so much :)

i can't wait now.

^awesome surprise.

Our GTA IV review is going live tomorrow morning, 9 AM Pacific/12 PM Eastern in the easy-to-read Kotaku style. After that, expect a handy platform comparison, in which we talk about how GTA IV performs on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Yes, I've played both quite a bit, so I hope you'll find my nitpicking informative. See you tomorrow!

That would be BS. On the bright side Eurogamer will be doing a comparison review pretty soon and you'll also be able to get comparisons elsewhere too.

Well, IGN says PS3 version is better too but not by much.

Microsoft is nuts to pay 50mil for extra content. I can't see people running out to buy a 360 just because GTAIV on the 360 has a bit of extra content. Not 50mil worth anyway.

Honestly, don't kill yourself about the figures. From what I've seen Microsoft have paid them money and do get exclusive episodes but from what I am seeing they also have exclusive Ad Spots (ie no PS3 ones) and have always been the 'demonstrated' version through development.

My personal opinion is that it's as much about trying to get the PKU sales as it is the DLC. I have an XBox, I have points, I still hardly ever get DLC. GTA is still my favourite game series, by a fucking country mile, but I would still need to be convinced of something special to spend 6-8 pounds on it and I can't see what they can possibly offer that will make 10 million people spend five bucks.

I have an XBox already, I sold my PS3, I'm tempted to just go and buy another PS3 just as a fingers up to MS, they don't care but at the end of the day I've been through 5 360's, the noise does my head in and I don't agree with the way they're charging for live and then doing deals like this with publishers, I'm a big one for competition on merits sake and have issues with companies that don't try and sell with a positve message and show you why their product is better.

Voting with my dollars and all that. Not practical but feck it. I might be able to get a copy in advance if I offer my local game retailler to purchase a PS3 and pay a bit extra for GTA lol

This is what peeves me. I don't care what kind of product you're buying, but if it shows to be a pile of shit in your lap, you continue to deal with it and not find alternatives. I don't know how many times I see, "Well my 360 just died, now on my forth RMA in six months." I just couldn't deal with that. I've done it with video cards two or three times and had enough. If enough people switched to the PS3 then it would probably get better a lot faster. You vote with your dollars and from the looks of it, if you continue to keep giving Mircosoft money for a piece of shit, you're basically saying it's okay for them to give you crap and pay for it. What it boils down to is this, I just don't understand how you guys can deal with such a fail rate and faulty hardware problems no matter how decent the online system claims to be, especially when you have PC's to back it up with.

Bah, I crumbled. Just ordered it from NewEgg for the X360. Guess I'll be seeing some of my old XBL pals. :D

My Zero Hour unit RROD twice on me. Gave that one to my sissy and bought myself an Elite. As long as I don't have to pay for shipping or the repairs, I didn't really care about mailing it back to MS. I don't appreciate being inconvenienced, but I just hit UPS on the way home from work, and it get it back in a couple of weeks. Don't play my X360 enough to miss it.

IGN is one. There was another which I can't remember right now, sorry.

Good news though, IGN's final GTA4 review just went up and confirms their earlier comments, gives specific reasons why the PS3 version runs better - AA, less pop-in.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/869/869541p5.html

So less pop-in sounds like the major difference. Undoubtedly due to the hard drive ?

Depends, what kind of pop-in are they referring to-- the kind that shows up near you (like textures on GoW), or the kind that is far away. If its the latter than I think its just that the PS3 has more horsepower honestly, so it can have a further object distance. This is all speculation though. I'll be getting it for a PS3.

I think it's both.

Billboards and signs in the distance, and someone mentioned grass spawning in right at the last second like in Oblivion when the corresponding slider is turned down. I don't think it's due to hp, but rather the hard drive install. At least that's what IGN seemed to think.

And that makes sense in light of Dan Hauser's recent comments concerning the difficulty of working around a system with non-mandatory hard drive availability and last generation optical media.

But he was confident something will be worked out by the next sequel. I think MS will give them the ok to require a hd for the next GTA game. If they expand GTA IV into something like San Andreas, with multiple cities, I think it may require 2 DVDs.

They're getting their machines replaced for free... would you suggest they just trashed the machine and the games they have instead?

With me is 3 strikes and your out for good in the faulty hardware/Vehicle department and i wont by any hardware with that label on ever again, if i have games/software/items left over that works only on that particular hardware or any other same make labeled hardware then it gets flogged.
"Touch Wood" this has only ever happened to me with Apple, HP & Renault so far. Im currently on my 3rd 360 personally so wen that fucks up then yes ill be kissing goodbye to all the Xbox exclusives.
I think 3 chances for the same product i more than enough no matter how good the games/software/performance etc is.
Obviously my feelings would be different if say only one company made consoles or Vehicles etc.

The reason why the failure rate isnt going down so fast is because everybody is still happy/satisfied to get replacement 360s with the exact same components. With me if my 3rd 360 craps out and i get a replacement with the same shitty components with a 30% failure rate or whatever it is its going on ebay for some other poor fucker fo it to crap out on and damage MS reputation further.

When the next gen xbox comes out ill be waiting at least a year before deciding to buy one to see what the failure rate is (as long as this 360 doesnt crap out) and im sure a lot of people will do the same.

They'll be so shitscared about reliability next gen that the things will be bulletproof. You don't write off 1bn dollars without learning something.

...and sorry jester1176. Reviews coming in less than three hours now!

I am still on the fence about which version to buy. Currently leaning toward the PS3. (and that is mostly because it is my newest console, and I don't have many games yet.) Sadly I have to report that I am on my 3rd 360. My first started having trouble reading games right as the elite was released. I traded up for the elite and got a nice trade in bonus from Gamestop since I reserved it. About a month ago my elite started making this horrid noise when it tried to read games. I had bought the extended warranty so luckily they just swapped it out for me in the store. After I got my 3rd 360 I started to think that maybe it is time to invest in a new system that hopefully won't be plagued with the issues that my 360(s) had.

Enter PS3... Ever since I bought it, My 360 has been used for about an hour. I don't know why I didn't decide on the PS3 sooner. I am not saying that it is better, both have their own strengths and weaknesses. That is mostly why I am on the fence about it. Half of my friends have 360's half have the PS3, so much like Natalie Imbruglia, I'm torn..

It's time to pull out my console coin and flip to see who is gonna win.

Well you can try the disc in there I suppose... wouldn't guarantee good results though!

Reviews are up pretty much everywhere. Not a lot is made of any differences so it looks like whatever version you go for, you're golden. Good news!

Looks like circuit city has a deal, $10 gift card with any version of Gta 4. If I can get my hands on a CE from there I will cancel from gamestop

Pop up is a no no for me in a aaa title especially vehicles in a high speed chase

So I guess all previous GTA games were no no's for you? It's been a feature of the series for a while.

People buy the 360 for the same reason I bought it. So they can play with thier friends, and enjoy a better library.
Here at work most people have a 360, so we're all going to have a party with this multiplayer event. Unfortunatly, two of our friends only own a PS3, so they don't get to play with the rest of us.

You're going to need the PC version again then... because the PS3 version has pop-in, just less of it than the 360 version.

GametStop has an additional 20% per trade in. Only ended up paying $30 after trading in Armored Core 2 and Virtua Fighter.

People who are like me, who are so anal about stuff like this that they HAVE to know for themselves which one they prefer will just end up buying both versions and spend hours flipping back and forth to find out which one they prefer. In the end the losing title will just stay on the shelf as sort of a souvenir for this impossible obsession.

*sigh* ... ...

You're better off just linking to this thread on NeoGAF. They're collating all of it:

Worse than I expected. Check out this gif
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10941942&postcount=1217

"There's some long-distance graphical fade-in as well as some street-level hazards that appear only after you hit them."

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3167410&p=4

I'm gathering it runs worse on the core system. Better on the premiums because apparently it can cache some data, although it's not a full install.

If you read the thread you'll find PS3 owners saying they get the same thing. It's just how the game is in places.

There's really nothing to be concerned about. The reviewers have all addressed it and said it doesn't take away from the game at all. It does run worse without a HDD but that's to be expected and frankly I have no sympathy for those people as a 360 without a HDD is a sad thing.

They really should give 360 owners the option to install the game onto the HD if they so choose. I have the space and I want to install it for better performance, but I can't because there isn't even a frigging option.

I bet there's a bunch of elite owners that agree with you!

Maybe Rockstar should do a 3gb free DLC option. :D

Heck they should make this an option for ALL games. I bet most people have a couple of games they play regularly that they'd much rather store on their HD so they can first of all, have better performance and less load time, second of all, not have to listen to the mini-vacuum that makes the optical drive. Even for people with Premiums, there's enough space for a couple of games.

Come on Microsoft, please? Pretty please?

They'll never allow full installs (i.e. No disc). It would turn into a massive security hole overnight.
