SOYO 24" DYLM24D6 Official Thread

Oh yea, I forgot you were doing the mod

Do you have a panel model# we could add to the front page or something?

Although one guy reported in canada TN panels...

Just a reminder that the Soyo 24" 24DYLM24D6 Widescreen LCD Monitor is on sale for $299 at Office Max from March 2 to March 8.

I own this monitor and think it's fantastic! It must not be a TN panel because the color just looks too good, but I'll have to check based on what I've been reading on here lately. I've been thinking about picking up an Xbox with HDMI out, and I'm wondering how this monitor will handle it. This thread seems to have some conflicting info regarding display of 1080p output from the Xbox. Some posts say it won't do 1080p at all (720p max) with VGA out, but I'm not sure if they mean with HDMI out (via HDMI to DVI adapter), and other posts say it'll do 1080p but it'll be a little stretched (to native 1200p). What's the skinny on HDMI output at 1080p for Xbox or PS3?

The display has no scaler and is not 1080p native so it cannot display 1080p at all, in so far as I know. I do not have an Xbox 360, though, so... maybe I'm wrong. Good luck.

So this monitor doesn't do 1:1 pixel mapping, and scaling w/aspect ratio, right? If it were to receive a 480p input, it would stretch the hell out of it?

Also, I see that there are model numbers ending in "D4" and in "D6". Does this represent the difference TN and VA?

If you haven't seen my other thread, I'm a bit worried about getting mine (it's unfortunately already on the way) and realizing it's a TN too late.

Yeah, it's going to stretch any signal it gets -- if you don't want it to stretch you'll have to use your video card's built in scaling. That doesn't leave it very Xbox/PS3 friendly.

Given all your obvious misgivings about the panel, I'd say you should probably return it. You might be happy with it, but it would be unfortunate to have to sell it at a loss or be stuck with something you're unhappy with.

There is the option in the OSD (icon looks like a delivery truck) called Scalar Adjust, the options are 4:3 or 16:10. Far easier to use video card scaling if you mix wide and full screen resolutions, but the option IS there.

Mine arrived about 2hrs ago, and it's sweet so far.

It's sitting next to my 19" Soyo, which has treated me well for a year, and well go to help the HTPC as needed. I haven't run any 'tests' yet, but I don't notice any pixel problems. My 19"er had a stuck red pixel on the Windows taskbar, so unnoticeable except when switch between full-screen and the desktop.

I'll search on my own, but anyone have links for quick LCD tests?

I've noticed that I'm getting weird ghosting. When I move a cursor on my desktop, the track behind the cursor is a faint shadow that stays for about 1.5 seconds. It's quite annoying when doing anything.

I'm hoping that my cheap DVI cord(from 226bw stock package) is the root of the problem and that it's not a defect in the monitor.

I don't have a problem using the cord that came with the Soyo monitor. It looks like the exact same cord that came with my prior monitor (ViewSonic vp191b).

I grabbed a $30 off $150 coupon from ebay for $1 just waiting for it to show up on officemax for $280 or $300... the coupon is only good till mid-april...

Edit: Called Officemax, found a guy to check next week's flyer... from Sunday the 30th through April 5th it should be $299.99

So I'll grab it then, throw on my $30 coupon and hopefully get it cheap :)

Take a look at the monitor from an extremely high viewing angle so you are looking down at it.

If the colors went super bright or turned almost completely white, it's a TN.

Another way is to look at it from below. If the color turns dark or inverted then it is TN.

VA type panels have some lightening of colors from the side as well as above and below, but do not suffer from inversion of colors from below or complete washout/brightening of the colors from above.

Just purchased from FS in Canada ... how do I determine if it is TN or VA?

it doesn't stretch the picture, there is just a black bar on one side of the screen, so i guess it does 1:1

If you're using a PC, the video card will do the scaling, but if you try to plug in an xbox 360 directly into VGA and send it 1920 x 1080, it'll stretch it to 1920 x 1200 (it's native resolution)

any thoughts on when this unit may go back on sale?
Interesting, when its not on sale i am able to add it to the cart, but when it has been on sale previously and i add it to the cart, suddently it wont allow it saying its out of stock or some BS.

Took a look at this unit tonight....and passed. I didn't have very high expectations....but still....it just looked like it should come free with a happy meal.

I talked to a rep at officemax, says $299 on sunday for 1 week... said they got flyers for next week

You most likely saw a model that was probably a TN panel and improperly set up.

That, or you are someone who only wants an IPS screen only.

For $300, the P-MVA SOYO is quite a good deal. Especially if you can persuade them to accept a coupon.

you'd really be able to use the coupon with a $299 deal? maybe I should do that too :p

Other people have said it worked, so I'm assuming it will...

EDIT: Just ordered, free shipping, after the coupon I ended up at $290 (after taxes)

Woot, Dual 24" Soyos... hopefully this one is as good as my other one :D

yeah it says $299 again now, just like you predicted!

I wouldn't want to order one online. I am definitely going to go to the store and demand that they hook one up for me to see before I buy it. I doubt they'll be able to resist my wad of $20 bills :)

Haha, well they have basically a no-questions ask return policy for 2 weeks, and it's a 30 minute drive anyways, so if I get a good one shipped to me, I save some money, otherwise I can go in-store and have it swapped, and test that one instore, or bring a laptop and test in my car :)

well goodluck with your second soyo, I am looking forward to my first. I am currently using an 18 year old crt that has two rows of dead pixels and some magnet-like damage on the sides :p

Honestly I can't even notice the dead rows unless I try to, but I sure as hell won't be happy if my new monitor has even a single defect! :)

I picked one up in Walnut Creek, California today on the new $300 sale.

My manufacture date is 12/07 and it might be a TN.

Dammit.

But no dead pixels. :p

Shall we compare manufacture dates and panel types?

How sure?

It's pretty easy to tell, just move your head up over the top of the monitor and see if the colors invert (Blacks turn White, Whites turn Black.. etc)

Well, I'm coming from a 21 inch CRT which unfortunately is fading with age, so not 100%. I will fully admit if I'm full of it and wrong. I've been wrong before, I'm used to it.

It picks up a coppery color from side angles of about 35° and if I get just a little below the sweet spot it darkens. I don't notice it inverting from the top though, just getting brighter.

That's pretty normal...

It's really easy to tell if you have a TN panel, the colors change almost instantly if you look from above... the image looks distorted...

With a PVA panel, the image might get a bit darker from extreme angles, but it's still easy to see whats there...
