Everex XT5000T Support thread

I know this isn't completely related to hardware but it took a while for me to find and so I figured someone else out there was looking too. Today I received my Lowepro Topolis 1300 framed notebook case. If any of you do a lot of traveling with your notebook this is almost a must for 45 bux on amazon or adorama. The reason I am posting here is because it took me a long time to find a laptop backpack that actually fit my Everex. This one has a metal frame and plenty of padding and fits all of my extra cables, drawing paper, and I even have a spot picked out for where my wacom will eventually go(if i keep out of debt). Anyway just thought you all might want to know. Also what would you guys recomend as a processor upgrade beings as the 1.6 iisn't cutting it with all my design software open.

personally I use a standard leather briefcase by Targus. Works fine for my needs.

Are you sure it is the 1.6? 2 other things to consider 1st. Do you have the dual channel 667 ram (2 sticks), as this can be a huge issue with software open. Secondly the page file. if you have a slow drive, the stock one, consider a 7200.2 SATA II drive. if you get two you can put the page file in the front of the drive on the second one.

A lesser known drive issue is fragementation. Windows defrag wont help your boot files, meta data and page file. I'd suggest getting Raxco Perfect Disk 8.0. Even the evaluation download can show you if this is an issue and it wouldn't hurt trying it anyway.

A third consideration is soon RAID 0 may be available to speed things up more. If you have to upgrade the system is rated to a TL-60, a TL-64 may work as well. If it is the ram or drive though a CPU upgrade may not help much if at all. Any upgrade ups the L2 to 1M from 512K, this should help somewhat in multitasking if it is really a CPU issue.

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone knew these things. My question is with the .90nm vs the .65nm if the core die will sit as high from the cpu? I am sure it probably will be smaller, meaning less contact with the heat pipe. If the hight is different this may cause a contact or preasure issue against the die.

Also since the die will most likely have less contact area I am wondering if this will be an issue as well. This especially worries me as the thermal Watts are listed the same as the .90's. Another issue may be the thermal limits. The .90's are lited to 95C, what will the .65's be?

I know this may be a topic for elsewhere but I was thinking of our machines and their requirements.
The die shrink is only in 2 dimensions, for the most part - it will still sit just as high, but won't be as large of a square. :)

Agreed, and typically what you have when you look at a CPU is mostly pin packaging. The CPU itself is that little square underneath.

i just pulled the trigger and bought a xt5000t from tiger direct. I also bought 4gbs of ram for it:D. any1 want my stock 1gb stick pm me and we can work something out;) . i cant wait for monday, ill have it just in time for vacation:) and then school:(

Hmmm. I was going to buy this, but now the Vostro talk is stuck in my head. How much better is the 8600gt in the vostro 15" then the gf 7600 in the everex?

Depends upon what you're playing, I imagine. Not knocking Dell, but I would wait until there are a few independent reviews of these before you run out and drop a load of cash.

As other have pointed out there have been numerous complaints about screen quality and such. Just do all your homework before you dive in.

does anyone recomend a good WiFi/Bluetooth crad to replace the current one in the Everex XT5000T. Also where can I find a bigger battery. I do a lot of road traveling and my cars 12v DC doesnt work very well and currently the stock 6-cell is only giving me about an hours worth of life out of a full charge.

as of now the only battery available for these laptops are 6-cell...so you might be out of luck (unless, of course, you dont mind buying more of them)

after taking a look at the hard drive mounting bracket, i think it's really not that hard to make one. just take the stock one out, put it one a piece of sheet metal, outline it with a pencil and then cut along the outlining. after that, bend the head to create the right angle and drills 3 holes for the screws. the whole process should take less than 30 minutes.

It's kinda like suggesting that if your car overheats a bit you should take the hood off to increase airflow. Can it be done, sure. But is that something most people would find desireable/acceptable, no. They're gonna pay the money to take the car to the mechanic to figure out why it's overheating (say perhaps a bad/underrated thermostat).

I would rather not have to disassemble my laptop whenever I want to use it, then reassemble to take it on the go. Sorry, but it's just not a practical solution for me.

i have already posted the hardcore modding and easy modding for the heatsinks in the thread, and you kept talking yourself out of it. what else are you waiting for? some 'one push of a button' software that can automaticly reduce the GPU temperature without touch any tools? sorry that's not gonna happen. instead, just start picking up the tools and do something.

the new BIOS is up and so are the utilities for XP and Vista!!!

EDIT: ah, beat me by a couple seconds :)

Couple of questions for a raid noobie.

Can I dual boot?

When are the utilities installed?

Can I create a bootable cd using something like imgburn for the flashing.

thanks
Andy

Beware before you flash bios for raid, it say you MUST have two hard drives in it before flash bios.

BIOS (458KB): Update enables BIOS RAID feature. Revision D.1C. Beta *** WARNING - Do not install without 2 drives present in system ***

p/s I just install Nvidia 156.15 whql works well with 7600 without inf also in Nvidia control panel in Manage 3D setting now add HDR lighting. :D

156.15 keeper for me.

already in...... Was in abot 2 hours ago but have been reloading software.........:p

Hi,
I redid the install. at first I tried the drivers from everex but did not like the cpu usage or HDTach results. I next used the drivers originally from the DVD install. they seem better actually.

so before installing the raid drivers from everex you may want to hold off......

YAY raid!

I don't have 2 drives in my lappy (and even if I did I sure wouldn't RAID them) but isn't the RAID driver part of the nForce software? Did anyone compare the new Everex drivers to the RAID drivers that come with the nForce chipset software?

tbh......it's PROBABLY some quick fix they hastily threw out, to avoid a surgeon general's knock on their doorstep for fraudulent advertising RAID support on a laptop that they weren't ready to put it on.

My guess is there will be another update to come later on, that will give support, regardless if there are 2 drives in there or not.

Is there a readme anywhere on that site? I downloaded the files, but not sure of what procedure they recommend to setup the RAID recognition software and the actual BIOS flash. Clear as mud :(

there wasn't any for the bios with the 4gb support, but i used the flash program for the amilo 1526/1527 (download the windows bios flasher with one of the 1526's bios) with the bios from the everex site and i was able to flash in windows no problems.

i don't have any other ideas to tell ya sorry ;)

Thanks...it just seems like they are daring you to screw up. Most HDD manufacturers and production machine manufacturers will post a step by step procedure. I wonder if their support will actually be helpful with this or avoid the question like they did when I inquired multiple times as to the availability of a RAID BIOS update....the EverEx forum isn't exactly a treasure trove of information....it appears to be a mecca for the clueless.

Thanks for the link phatbx. I am just wondering, did you see any performance gains or bug fixes on games with these drivers. I am asking because I tried Far Cry at 1024 X 768 in Vista 32 with everything high and with water quality ultra and HDR 7 on and when I try HDR on the sky goes dark, plus during firefights it lags horribly, otherwise, it goes pretty smoothly except with the HDR issue. Plus with the new drivers do you just unzip and run or do you have to do something special INF files? Thanks!

from the everex forums, i may have to try this :)

If you want to easily update your BIOS, use a USB thumb drive. Some instructions found on the Web are really difficult. Not this way. Let me give you the benefit of my experience with these systems.

Go here: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

Download both the HP formatter and the Win 98 Boot Files.

Follow the directions there and you will be be booting from your flash drive in a few minutes. Then updating your BIOS in a few more.

Good Luck,

Gary Meleski

page 111 in the user manual explains how to flash the BIOS using a USB device. The wording/grammer is rather poor.

To upgrade the BIOS

1. Put in the BIOS Update data into the USB device.
2. Power on the system with the USB device inserted in the USB port
3. On the DOS prompt type the following command.

A:\>Phlash xxxxxx.ROM (BIOS filename) or
A:\>xxxxxx.BAT (Batch file for BIOS file)

Press <Enter> to run this BIOS utility. After the system has been successfully
run this program a message similar to the following appears:

Flash memory has been successfully programmed, press any key to restart the
System. If the system does not restart, turn it off, then turn on again.

4. Press any key to restart this system

Sorry I dont have Far Cry installed, anyway for 156.15 just unzip file then open folder to find setup to run that it, you might uninstalled old driver first then install new driver from there.

Hi,
The reason you need two drives is drive recognition on that bios is deleted from the main bios setup. You will see no drives. If you do not have two drives you are pretty much out of luck............

After the bios screen a Raid Utility becomes available if you press F10. There you can add the drives and select between modes. If you want Raid 0 select striping Raid1 select Mirror. Even though there can only be two drives all 5 raid options are available. This is a good sign this was a rush job getting it out.

once you have selected your mode you will be asked to bind the drives and erase all data, Once this is done you get a confirmation. by default here boot is not selected. be sure you make the drive bootable.

Personally I used the recovery DVD for the OS. by default the RAID is recognized and a MS SCSI drive controler is added as a device. I went and imediately added the drivers Everex has on their site. Once I did that the CPU loads went nuts on reboot. as I updated drivers etc it never got better so I redid the drive and used the original DVD drivers. All is well again now.

Sorry about having to wait for some tip's here, I'm out of state posting from my moms house in PA on a 28,800 connection and my XT5000T is home.

Well so am I or I wouldn't know that it is a technological wasteland :p ...and thanks Andy, I now remember the reference to the RAID installation in the User Manual if I can just find my book

Actually it was popularized by Curly of the Three Stooges who reportedly lifted the phrase from Amos and Andy, and yes it is a standard comical line when someone call you something you find funny...but I digress.

I wish the EverEx forums were a bit more active and especially the support team from EverEx would hang out there on a regular basis to field technical questions. It would cut down on their 'official' workload from email requests.

hey guys
just some update: i took the thermal pad off and soldered the CPU's and GPU's heatsinks together. the GPU temperature is now staying constant at 65C no load (5C down from 70C) - reported by Speedfan.
after i looped 3Dmark06 for one night (about 9 hours), the GPU's highest temp was only 74C. btw, the ambient temperature in my room is 78F (~25C)
tempje9.png

so, although the mod did not reduce the an impressive amount of temperature, it helps to keep the GPU temp more stable.

nietsni3

Couple of questions to clairfy what you have done.

1. Are you undervolting?
2. Did you use a piece of metal between the heatpipe and the gpu heatsink as you described in post #944. If yes did you use thermal grease on both sides of the piece of metal?
3. Are you still using the thin shim on the cpu heatsink or did you eliminate it and are just going cpu heatsink to core with thermal grease?
4. When soldering & looking at your diagram in post # 944 it appears you are just filling the voids between the piece of metal and the gpu heatsink and the voids between the heatpipe and piece of metal, is this correct?
5. What type of instrument are you using to solder, just a regular soldering gun??
6. I'm assuming you set everything in place first and tighten it down ie: the cpu heatsink, and the last step is the soldering?

Thanks
Andy

Yeah it is an old line, my first introduction and prominent memory of it is the Marx Bro's.

And I agreed they need to take their best tech and have him or her, have to be pc here, and have them address the forum first and take calls or whatever second. It would make life, especially for the casual user, much easier and could probably save the company money in the long run.

The advanatage is allot of posted questions are ones asked by many users. Posting the answer once rather than a hundered seperate times is a cost saver. It seems Everex has the exact opposite format for their User Forum.

In fact it seems like the tech's almost hide away from ever using the forum. To be honest the only reason I can see doing this is either you have no tech's or the tech's are so inept that your company fears posting their responces. It is possible they out source Tech support to a company that has no idea what they are supporting.

They may be reading from a script asking questions and using a wizard for standard answers. It is a shame but a company offering such deep pricing cuts can rarely afford say 10 higher end techs that can really address the issues. Larger companies such as Dell or HP don't have this issue.

This is where forums such as this one flourishn, and thank god for them. Look at the thread length of just this thread. It serves as proof where users can support other users. I throw the Kudos not only to the people who can answer the questions here but to the ones who ask them as well. Without eirther alot of people would probably have expensive door stops, especially the guest who cruise in the background just reading for an answer.

I sent an email to their support and linked this thread for their information. There is a lot of info here that they probably have no clue about. I also asked if they would consider assigning some support staff to answer questions in the XT5000T forum specifically. We will see if it did any good.
