I was wondering what processors were good for this socket near End of life ?

I am running a XP 2000 socket A , and wanted to bump it up a bit.

Get a Barton Processor for it. They range from the 2500, 2600, 2800, 3000, and 3200+. I had a Barton Mobile 2500 because they overclock like mad, but good luck finding one.

Socket A is usually what it's referred to... but I think it's socket 462

What OC can you get on that chip? You can hope for 2.4Ghz on air with a Barton mobile (see sig) so if you're already getting 2.1-2.2Ghz with your current chip, it's a waste of your time/money.

I don't think I will be doing any OC'ng. In CPUZ it says my processor is running at 1.6 ghz

Socket 462 for certain. I remember the 426 being a Mopar Hemi V8. :D

Mmmmm HEMI. Makes my 383 in my road runner seem insignificant...

I have a Compaq system that had the Athlon 2000XP (1.6 ghz) so I called them up and asked about a bump up. They told me it would accept the XP2400 (1.83 ghz) so I went ahead and got one (this was about 3 yrs ago), a new hsf and a gig of ram. Its still doing yoeman duty as my wife's pc. To tell you the truth I don't see a lot of speed difference between the two cpu's.

It depends on what your motherboard is capable of using. If you can only take the 266mhz FSB chips, then you're limited to the 2400+, but you can go all the way to 3200+ with the Bartons and 333/400 FSB. Mobile chips by default are 266mhz FSB and multiplier unlocked. If you can find one of those, they are the best anyway :).

Don't have much to offer this thread except.....Socket A for life! Still have a 2400+ Mobile Barton running 24/7 as a secondary computer.

I would just write it off. Use it for what you can then get a A64. Any money thrown into that system better be on something you can carry over to a full upgrade when your ready. I overclock my 1800+ chip which runs at 1.53 stock to 2.3. So if you can do that it would be my only suggestion.

Good to see some people still run the Old School Socket A boards. I got a Shuttle AN35N
awhile back and it still works great.

Still running mine! games just fine in Oblivion, F.E.A.R... etc. (build new gaming rig in week though... Retiring barton box for a fileserver/htpc

Just to point out, the deals on a 754 A64 processor + motherboard are extremely cheap. For about ~$85 you'll have a 3000+ and a motherboard which you can overclock to get performance out of reach of any XP processor.

another tip, even if your mobo only does 266 fsb, you can still pick up a 2600 or 2800 Tbred, if you can find an early one

my mom is still using my old 2600 Tbred, which is running 21x100 (guys who built it where so incompetent they didnt test the ram to see if that was stopping it from running 333 FSB, so they rigged it with the higher multi, at the time i was to noobish to dare handle €160 chips and such)

point is, early tbred 2600/2800 cpus arent multi locked

Socket A
*Shivers*
I remember those days, come on guys... at least get a 754 :D :p

2800+ Barton and Abit NF7-S here. Probably spent more money on it in the past year than I should've ($500 after its all said and done), but I can't say it doesn't do what I want. It plays all my games at least on medium settings, and chugs along with my level of multitasking.

Loved my NF7-S. Best board I ever owned.

Asus A7N8X-E with a Mobile Barton 2500 was good to me... ran stable and cool at 2.4ghz. My friend has it now and it's still running solid with a Powercoler 9800 pro.

Agreed.

I considered dropping a newer chip in my wife's 1800+ box but it's cheaper to buy an A64 + board. I plan on doing a mini upgrade to 939 when the dualies get cheaper or more useful and doing the typical hand-me down thing to her. She always has my hand-me-downs.
