    Samsung 840 EVO 250GB Performance

I just got a new Samsung EVO 250GB SSD on cyber monday and just hooked it up and wanted to do some benchmarks. But I am concerned that the performance is much lower than what I was expecting from both their stated speeds and other benchmarks I've looked at. I'm getting around both 200MB/s Read...

    SAS/Sata backplane connection question

I want to add that I only intend to use SATA drives, so I am not worried about compatibility with SAS

    SAS/Sata backplane connection question

I am looking at purchasing a Supermicro SC825TQ-560LPB chasis with a SAS/Sata backplane. I am using a desktop motherboard without a raid controller, so I only have regular SATA ports. How do I connect from the motherboard to this backplane, can I just user 8 SATA cables or do I need...

    Anyone playing Perpetuum Online? thoughts?

I'm looking into starting to play some sort of sandbox mmo. Eve sounds great but I am worried about the direction it is heading with microtransactions and the fact that it seems late to start a game where the skill points are based on time played. Also the combat in Eve seems, to me, relatively...

why use ESXi free over Hyper-V Server?

I've had trouble getting the free CLI version of Hyper-V running in a home environment without a domain, so ESX and XenServer are more attractive on that front.

Free ESXi 5.0 8 GB vRAM Limit

Does this mean you can't over-provisions your VMs with ram and use esxi's dynamic allocation?

Low Power Windows Server Build Hardware Check

You may want to consider this mobo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182262 The only difference is 2 identical Intel NICs on this one vs one standard intel nic and the other is an intel chipset nic which currently has compatability issues with ESX from what I hear. From...

WHS 2011 in VirtualBox on OpenIndiana (home use)?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think the best way to do this would be share out iSCSI from OpenIndiana and have VirtualBox use that as the datastore for VMs. Is this possible/make sense?

WHS and WMC in a single box?

WHS woks fine with Hyper-V, however with WMC you are unable to passthrough a PCI/PCI-X TV tuner to a virtual machine. The only way the have a virtual WMC record tv is using a network tuner like SiliconDust so the VM can access it.

    Home media server build assistance?

I am kind of in the same situation. I was originally planning to run one of the ESXi all in one systems but in order to avoid all that weirdness I am thinking of running a base OS for ZFS and then installing software for virtual machines (perhaps VirtualBox) on top of that. In Virtualbox I will...

    EVE Online chaotic right now.

I'm looking for a mmo to play and EVE was of interest to me due to its unrivaled economy and world pvp but I am wondering if this is a bad time to start getting involved with the micropayment system starting. What are your thoughts? I'm also not sure if I'm going to like the pvp since it...

Confused about passing HDDs to VM in ESXi

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure. @jbraband Since the X9SCM-F has 4x Sata2 and 2x Sata 3.0 (I believe) are those able to be split up and shared with 2 different VM's or one used as datastore and one passed through? Or are they both on a single controller?

Confused about passing HDDs to VM in ESXi

Why would he need 2 HBA's? Couldn't he just run the 5 2tb drives off a single HBA passed through to the SAN VM and use the onboard controller as the ESXI install and SAN VM datastore? Can the onboard controller on these supermicro boards be passed through to the SAN VM and get a cheap 2 port...
