    Are you running Intel or nVidia graphics over HDMI? If so, the low black/ contrast issue is well known with a workaround. Try DVI-D cable first to see if that solves your issue.

    If 220 PPI at 20 inches viewing distance (Macbook Pro 15") is considered "retina", 108.79 at ~31 inches has got to be getting close. I can tell you my Dell is functionally equivalent to "retina" at 136.7 PPI at ~25 inches.

    Same Panel as Apple Cinema 27". The Dell is a different panel altogether, though the same manufacturer (LG) and class. Also, the Korean IPS screens have no AG coating, while Dell's is somewhat... problematic.
