Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
Already have that DejaWiz. But I was thinking that rubbing paste off of the CPU might produce some static discharge.
I've always used paper towel and isopropyl alcohol, not sure if that's healthy for the CPU.
Well, the tape was about 2 inches long and it did contain some static as it was attracted to metal.
Thanks for the reassurance.
If there's anything I've learned from this experience, it's that all you can really do at home is minimize ESD by being (very) careful. How much you may look out...
I didn't touch any bare wires, and I think the insulation is intact. I was connected with the computer through a wrist strap when I was pulling the tape off of the insulation (though I'm more worried about the static charge the tape holds and creates on the insulation). But afterwards I touched...
Hello guys,
I've just built a new computer, and this was the first time I've used ESD protection like wrist strap and grounding mat. Now, I believe I have used these tools to the best of my ability. But when you do this for the first time, you notice that nothing ever goes as you intended...
That's what I was thinking too.. Now that you mention it, what about the charge that is left inside the PSU when it is unplugged (which makes it so dangerous to open one), does the motherboard still receive current from this?
That's the very reason I'm not comfortable with it, because I don't...
First, let me apologize for making yet another thread that has to do with ESD. But it seemed to me like the best way to get some needed information. Please don't make this into a discussion about whether or not ESD is real.
People say you should ground a computer case when working inside so...
Absolutely, especially the contradictions are confusing. It's still the best discussion on the topic I've come across. I've read it several times, hoping each time it would become clearer. :D But alas..
On the other hand, it IS a discussion and everyone is allowed to participate in it.
They showed it on NGC once. :)
I felt a spark yesterday when I touched my main PC. I'm glad it's connected to earth. So if I understand things correctly, you can't walk across the room holding a PC or put it somewhere else, unless it's grounded? I must have damaged many, many things.
But the...
I'm in Belgium yes. I still have a credit note of €125 to spend at www.descom.be (online computer shop). They have an APC BACK-UPS RS 800VA 230V at €198,90. I've also looked at www.tweakers.net/pricewatch, it gives you a list of Dutch shops selling a particular item and their prices...
Thanks for your explanation jonnyGURU
Well, I've used the selector at APC's website and it came up with this, this or this.
Tha last one looks like the best choice, but the lowest price I can find for that unit is 180 ($245! ). And I'm not even sure if it will solve my issue. Another...
Finally got around testing a bit more. I connected the vacuum cleaner to 3 different outlets. The one from the washing machine, and 2 in the kitchen. I've used the cleaner several times, no problem. I examined the electrical wires. The PC outlet is directly connected to the washing machine...
Question: can this be compared with a PC by replacing "airplane" with "PC" and "chassis" with "case"?
Well it wasn't really meant to be an exact question. I'm not interested in the statistics, I just want to know if it can cause damage like the way touching a chip can cause damage.
Thanks...
