Well it looks like my offer for a E3-1280 was accepted so I'll be using the intel board.
Comparing both, seems the E3-1280 will have a lower typical power consumption compared to my i7-870 Asus setup.

-Gain experience with proxmox/and possibly xenserver
-VM's to create:
--PFsense possibly

As per your recommendation, I purchased 32gb of corsair memory and just received it today. The motherboard accepted it and the system booted up just fine.
