2x1024 is your best bet to stay with dual channel. I was in the same boat with 2 x 512 dual channel doesn't run with 3 or 4 sticks only 2. So i upgraded mine to 2gb with two corsairs 1024 3200 twinxctpro this is the only way to stay in dual channel mode for me. I have the same board

I bought mine about a month ago the silver one and its great for gaming doesn't have that snowie affect your talking about. It might be a defect. You should consider in taking it back or call viewsonic and see if they have some kind of techincal support or something like that
