Dev isn't totally dead on the original, T3CH is still releasing SVN builds on a fairly regular basis. Current original build is 9.11a1 and I'm sure in not too long of a time, 9.11b2 will be compiled for original.
If there is a version of Opera Mini 5.0 for the Storm, it features tabbed browsing. Can keep your link open in one tab and browse in others. Works on my Curve. It has to be the 5.0 beta though, the older versions don't have tabbed browsing.

I would say probably an ATI 3850 or 3870. Gaming wont be tremendous with that high of resolution, but those cares have HDMI with audio passthrough, seems like a very good option for your friend. Plus, the price is very competitive.
