my friends has a 26' westy widescreen and he is running 8500gt

what should he be running..he doesnt game alot but he watches tv via his computer and fixin to upgrade his cable to hd.
 
I would say probably an ATI 3850 or 3870. Gaming wont be tremendous with that high of resolution, but those cares have HDMI with audio passthrough, seems like a very good option for your friend. Plus, the price is very competitive.
 
8500 has good decode and video playback. I sport an 8500 in my Media Center PC and it plays HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays like butter.
