    Could it be that your network registry settings could do with being changed? (I thought this was one factor that causes a noticeable difference across different OS's and OS versions). I'm talking about MTU, RWIN etc.

    I suggest maybe trying to get portable apps! Keep these separate from your OS (perhaps a different partition) as well as your data (documents etc.) so it is easy recover if your OS fails you. The portable apps site is good...you can get portable apps for different uses, including an antivirus...
