    If its just a backup phone and you won't be texting with it, I'd say go for the Sanyo Katana Eclipse X or the motorola VE20. Otherwise, go for the nextel direct connect phone moto renegade v950. Unless you're looking for a wider phone for ease of holding.

    I think you're right about the lower slot being faster. I noticed in windows in the ATI control panel that it read as 8x, so i assume the top slot is the slow one.
