    I've had a similar problem. Whenever i try to replace the 40mm fan with anything but stock the enclosure boots, fan spins then shuts down after a few seconds. If i put back in original fan the enclosure works fine.

    I just installed linux opensuse as a test and the areca + expander combo worked perfectly in that environment. So it seems its a windows issue and not (thank god) a hardware problem.

    If I hook up the drives directly to the areca card it works fine but as soon as I connect the hp card I get the same freezing on drived install/refusing to boot. Is this a driver issue? Anyone have any ideas?
