VFD + Remote control set up

I've been trying to set up an Origenae case with a VF110 VFD and the stock remote control it came with. I have the VFD LCD set up and running LCDsmartie. The problem is programming the remote. THe VFD is irtrans whose software is just awful/outdated/needlessly complicated. Do i/can i use 3rd party software to set this up? The most i can get with the irtrans software is when i try to setup "learn IR code" and press a button on the remote a code pops up and the VFD briefly stops its lcdsmartie scroll but then nothing happens even though its set up to shut down the computer. Anyone have any experience with programming remotes with irtrans? The ultimate goal is to control windows media center with it and launch programs from some of the buttons.
