I'm either really unlucky, or just stupid...

You give me hope, sir! I'll go double check the OPROM settings. With latest BIOS (2.0c) I can't even get past the initial prove for hardware (four beeps, with a fifth higher pitched one indicating success). It just hard resets before the fifth beep. I'll yank out the cards now and try a few bios...

Don't say that :C I'm thinking that you might be right though. But using a single card (either the NIC or the RAID controller), and moving it around between PCI-E slots, I have the same symptoms. This is also the second board that I have.

I'm either really unlucky, or just stupid...

Update: I've managed to make it into the WebBIOS once or twice. Seemingly randomly, hard-reset again. Literally the power just dies and the box begins rebooting. I am at a total loss at this point.

I have a SuperMicro X9SCL+-F-O and an LSI 9266-8i running latest firmware. As soon as the LSI card begins to initialize devices, the box hard resets (during post). I have the right ram and the BIOS is at the right revision. What a I missing? The LSI card when put into a PowerEdge 2950 works...

    LSI 9266-8i WebBIOS

Cheers! I appreciate the info. That's unfortunate - the Dell PERC UI's really spoiled me :C The CLI is actually pretty sweet - you get MegaCLI and the other utils (don't use those really) right in a shell. :D I wound up using the CLI to create my volumes. The WebBIOS is just .. so clunky and...

    LSI 9266-8i WebBIOS

It blows chunks. What ever happened to using an actual BIOS configuration utility? Does anyone know how to disable this / get into a normal BIOS config on this card? My options during post are Ctrl-W for webBios, and Ctrl-somthing else for "basic CLI prompt"..

    LSI Card on Commodity Hardware?

Thank you all for your replies! I appreciate the help!

    LSI Card on Commodity Hardware?

No. Two unrelated statements. I currently use a PERC 6/i and it works flawlessly. I'm going down the upgrade road and am looking at several LSI cards, but am wondering if they'll work with Whitebox hardware.

    LSI Card on Commodity Hardware?

I've been wary of migrating to an H710 as I thought they did away with the interoperability. Did you just reflash the card to SLI firmware, or does it work as-is? Which re-branded card is the H710? Awesome, excellent to hear.

    LSI Card on Commodity Hardware?

I saw that, but the PERC 6/i (as with a lot of components) never list consumer end products, but work flawlessly none the less. I pick on the PERC 6/i because it's known quite well as a cheap RAID controller that can do a lot, and it works in almost all off-the-shelf component builds. It's also...

    LSI Card on Commodity Hardware?

I've read things over the years about incompatibilities with enterprise grade hardware (RAID Controllers) not working in commodity hardware. I'm in the process of building a new NAS and am eying the 9266-8i Given that this NAS is hardware raid, RAM and CPU aren't critical to me. This card...

    Large Scale NAS

This looks interesting - the 16 bay SuperMicro case I've been eying is about 200$ more than this, bare. Regarding something Lost-Benji said, and something I hadn't really considered.. was using this new build as a my VM box as well as my data pile... Given that, is this case upgradeable to...

    Large Scale NAS

Thank you so much for the insight! I've been thinking that the hardware RAID route might be the best way for me at this point, at least until ZFS is more native in Linux (yay license incompatibility? :C ). I've already go the 10Gig infrastructure, so those costs aren't a part of this build :)...

    Large Scale NAS

I've been reading horror stories about how feeble this case is (the 4224), but it's look badass... It's also reasonably inexpensive. I assume that you're using it as a JBOD box, and not using the SAS expanding version? When ordering backups, do you mean of the actual backplane lane, or...

    Large Scale NAS

What would you use for disks for your ZIL? How do you feel about the Norco 24 bay hotswap case? Why avoid the expander? Without it, finding a mobo with enough PCI-e slots becomes a challenge.
