    any ideas?

Not that anyone cares... but I have it working now... Basically my machine has 1 32bit/33mhz slot and 1 64bit/64mhz slot as well as two 64bit/100mhx pci-x slots... I had put the Audigy card into the 32bit slot without any thought really. And it didn't work. So I finally experimented by...

    any ideas?

Am converting a Dell PowerEdge 1800 server into a desktop of sorts... running XP SP2... no problems with general functions... Had put in a Audigy 2 ZS just because I had it... and installed just the drivers (ie none of the other fluff from the CD) and then updated the drivers via the web. XP...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

Have sent an email to Jaton and also to XFX... just to clarify what the cards have and don't have and what they do and don't support... will see how it goes. It appears tho that both should support a 16x9 high res digital monitor via DVI... so that's encouraging... and both have directx9...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

So the info on the Jaton card seems to be confused... looking at Jaton's web site they say that the Video-248PCI-DVI (card linked by CrimandEvil) has 128mb, but that its only a 64 bit memory interface... So yeah, that's why I was considering the other cards... to get the 128 bit interface...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

Thanks all... So the 5600 in the link above seems to be just a oddly labelled 5200... but others have said its a good card... but it seems to be pricier than others in its class... $150 vs $100... Digging around seems a lot of people frown on the FX5700LE mostly because its only got 128mb...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

OK, mod abandoned... I got about half the back end of the x8 slot opened up and was proceeding along fine, when wham, got careless and dinged two of the pins big time... managed to get them sorta kinda straight again, but nowhere close to what they should look like... at least they're not...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

OK... had a look inside to figure this all out... I definitely have a real x8 slot, not one of the mod'ed x16 slots like in the 420. One other obstacle is some sort of cooling foil directly behind the x8 and x4 slots. Luckily it looks like the groove of each slot lines up with a grove within the...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

All right... thanks again all... Looking at the photos of the mod in the linked thread above makes me think I'll have to make a slightly different mod, more along the lines of what gwu168 originally suggested. Mostly from the few not so great pics I could find online, I think I may have legit...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

Thanks all... will certainly look at making the mod... seems reasonable... Can anyone comment on what kind of performance I'll get out of the 6600 in this setup vs going with a PCI card that has directx 9... so something like the FX5200 or FX5700?

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

Thanks gwu168... seems like something to try, certainly can't hurt anyway... Forgetting that I have the 6600 in hand, I'm guessing this is a better way to go that any of the PCI card options? Most of the problem there seems to be the directx 9 issue... most of the ok PCI cards are all...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

I know you can plug some hard drive controllers (scsi) into the x8 slot, so I'm guessing that's what these were intended for (given the "server" classification of the machine)... Anyway, I should have mentioned too... I'd like to have something that is directx 9 capable and that has dvi...

arrgh... what card for Dell dilemma?

Hi All, I tried to do some searching but didn't find anything concrete, but realize this is probably a variation of an oft asked question, so apologize in advance if it annoys some of you... Anyway, I'd posted before that I'm planning to turn a Dell PowerEdge 1800 into a workstation...

How worthless is my embedded ATI adapter?

Hi, So planning to convert a Dell PowerEdge 1800 server into a workstation running windows XP. No real special plans for the machine, just a bit of a powerful machine to play with when I need something to do. It has a built in ATI Radeon graphics adapter with just 16mb sdram... I think I...
